To think Adele’s been shockingly unprofessional?

Adele was due to start a Las Vegas residency at Caesar’s Palace this weekend and cancelled the entire thing less than 24 hours ahead of time, saying they weren’t ready for a number of different reasons.

FIL had bought tickets to the opening night for himself and MIL as a 40th wedding anniversary present, they had pretty much just checked into their hotel when she announced it wasn’t going ahead, and the cost of that and their flights is now money down the drain. DH and I and BIL and SIL were planning on taking them away for a family weekend at Easter but have instead offered to pay for travel and accommodation when (if?) it gets rescheduled.

I get that covid is fucking a lot of things up for a lot of people, but surely they could have faced reality a bit sooner? Even one more day’s notice would have saved so many people taking flights and checking into hotel rooms that they could have rebooked or been refunded for.

If she doesn't want to perform live why do it ?

She was reportedly getting half a million quids per show according to the BBC .

Personally i wouldn't walk to the end of my road to see her , and it's a very short road

@RainbowZebraWarrior

The thing is, Adele is a hugely emotional person. Obvious by the 'devastation' she feels when her relationships break up. These dysfunctional breaks ups fuel the painful songs for each album. It's kind of how her life works. It feels quite alien to me that she is so utterly obsessed with heartbreak and makes her music all about this. I think she is a deeply troubled individual, and as such is more likely to over react.

So things went a bit wrong, she absolutely lost the plot ant called the whole lot off. It's a highly strung mentality. And self absorbed as others have said making the sobbing video all about herself.

Fantastic voice, but her drama is too much for me.

I agree with this. Have never understood the hype about Adele, all that down to Earth nonsense that is supposed to be part of her appeal. She comes across as self indulgent and I think it’s incredibly unhealthy to be so focused on relationships. There’s only so much whimpering about heartbreak one person needs to do!

@ajandjjmum

We were driving down to London for the 2017 (?) show at Wembley, when we heard on the radio it was cancelled. We were gutted - had treated ourselves to the Shard and it was going to be a really special weekend with DB and SIL.

DD had been earlier in the week to see her, and said it was an amazing show.

We paid an absolute fortune for the concierge to get us tickets to 'something' that night, and it turned out to be 'Bat out of Hell' - it was fantastic, and really rescued our weekend.

Funny how Adele and Meatloaf are both (sadly) in the news now.

Yes and Meatloaf absolutely pushed himself to the limits for his concerts, it was about the performance and his music, not videos of him crying feeling sorry for himself.

By the way, Anyone who hasn’t listened to ‘Heaven can wait’ by Meatloaf please do, it’s wonderful!

Coconuttts · 22/01/2022 10:42

TBH, I was quite stunned at the adulation she received for "putting her own happiness ahead of her child"....I get that relationships break down, but to go around saying it in this way - just came across as really selfish to me. For that poor kid, everyone the world over knows EVERYTHING about that break up now, including she made herself miserable trying to make it work for her son. That is a lot to put on a kid.

StationaryMagpie · 22/01/2022 10:42

Having been involved in a massive event that had to be cancelled last minute due to covid, i am kind of on the Fence.

I doubt very much that this is Adele's fault, she might be the performer, but the show cannot go on without all the backstage and venue staff available and on board.

The issue here is her management company and possibly the venue will have let her down massively, then shoved her up front to face the music and try to mitigate the backlash.

What i'm annoyed about, is they will have known this was at risk of not being able to happen for a while, while they've been scrambling frantically behind scenes to try and MAKE it happen, then had to go 'oh shit, we have to cancel' at the last moment.

By the time in proceedings that my event was in that stage of 'oh shit' we were communicating with our tickets holders on a regular basis to keep them informed and prepare them for the fact we might not be able to go ahead, so when our venue went 'sorry, nope, covid laws say no' the attendees/ticket holders were well warned it was a distinct possibility... not that it stopped them being pissed off btw.

She will be genuinely upset too.. unless you've been through that, you have no idea how soul crushing it is to put months and months of planning and hour after hour of work into an event like that, for it to be pulled off air the last moment.. and you're suddenly left with having to appease your clientele at the same time through something that is usually no fault of your own, and a failure of the logistics/planning behind scenes.

TansySorrel · 22/01/2022 10:44

@ahcmonnow

I wouldn’t open my curtains if she was playing in my garden but I appreciate a lot of people like her caterwauling. There is NO excuse under the sun to cancel a gig in less than 24 hours unless she was sick herself. You don’t just realise the day before that everything isn’t ready! I feel so so sorry for those people who spent so much money getting to Vegas only to be met with this bollox. The snivelling sorry video is pathetic.
Ha ha at wouldn't open your curtains Grin
Rina66 · 22/01/2022 10:46

l love Adele but this last minute cancellation coupled with those 'stories' that she imposed that you had to listen to her album in strict order on Spotify and the interview she walked out on as the guy hadn't listened to her album, it just makes me think she's become a real diva. A lot of her appeal was that we felt she hadn't changed from her chasing pavement days.

whynotwhatknot · 22/01/2022 10:46

load sof shows there are cancelled at hort notice theyre not going to refund a holiday jsut because someone wants to see adele

theres plenty of other things to do in vegas

StationaryMagpie · 22/01/2022 10:47

oh, and she will also be facing knowing they will have to re-do it all, even knowing that the same thing could happen again.

The event i do is an annual affair, and every single year we've had to do all the behind the scenes logistics and planning because of the contracts we're tied into with the venue and vendors we employ.. so 3 times now in 2020, 2021, and this year for 2022 we've had to put the full years work in, in the hope the event will go ahead, and then had to cancel it... so i do have some sympathy for her upset.

MilkGoatee · 22/01/2022 10:48

Different genre altogether, but in 2012 a Finnish band Nightwish did a tour in the US, when things that were bubbling under the surface with their front woman came to a head. She had voice issues, I think had to go into hospital (I believe they were in Seattle or thereabouts at the time).

The band, not wanting to disappoint the fans, put on a limited show with two female singers from other bands who more or less knew the repertoir. Lyrics in hand, they did it. Then the band asked a Dutch singer of the same genre to come over at 48 hrs notice, she had to learn their complete repertoire (their latest album) on the flight. And she stepped in for the rest of their tour which went all over the place (north and south america). She's been their front woman ever since, and the most successful one, arguably.

That's how you do it professionally.

Anjo2011 · 22/01/2022 10:48

I don’t think her voice is up to it. She’s a perfectionist and hasn’t done a live gig for a few years. The launch of her new album that was televised for ITV was pre recorded so any flaws could be ironed out. The 24 hours notice is very poor, they would have been aware prior that it ‘wasn’t ready.’

DrSbaitso · 22/01/2022 10:50

@MarshaBradyo

I had no idea where she was from eg US etc, her speaking voice sounded different to what I expected
crochetmonkey74 · 22/01/2022 10:50

I totally agree with you OP . She could have one an unplugged style concert , I think its shockingly bad form. As a teacher, I worry what these last minute cancellations and dropping out of things are going to do to young people's understanding of responsibility and doing things that are sometimes hard so we dont let others down.

whynotwhatknot · 22/01/2022 10:51

can i just add op your parents flight wouldnt be refundable because adele wasnt playing

Exhausteddog · 22/01/2022 10:51

I think even worse is Harry Styles, to keep people waiting for 2 years, and then switch to stadiums and less dates and think fans getting presale first will make up for that. I'd be annoyed if was going.

I'm wondering how that will work. DD is desperate for me to get her tickets (she became a fan in 2020 and didn't have tickets for the previous tour) but I'm not sure what my chances are if (and rightly so) previous ticket holders for 8 concerts get priority booking for 3 concerts? Will there even be enough tickets to accommodate the previous ticket holders

The only thing (and was pondering this with DD this morning) I can think of is that if the venues themselves are booked up several years in advance for other tours, which takes priority - the rescheduled tour or the original booking?

duvetdayforeveryone · 22/01/2022 10:51

Shame on Adele!!! Adele used to do gigs in pubs! Surely she could have done something for them?!?

crochetmonkey74 · 22/01/2022 10:52

I highly doubt the venue is to blame. Caesars is a massive machine designed to make money in all circumstances

Whinge · 22/01/2022 10:52

oh, and she will also be facing knowing they will have to re-do it all, even knowing that the same thing could happen again.

I don't think she ever rescheduled her 2017 tour, so there's no guarentee she'll reschedule this one. If it was just one or 2 weekends then it might have happened, but she's postponed the entire tour. I really can't see her redoing it at a later date.

QueenPeony · 22/01/2022 11:01

Gigging/touring is hard work and must be especially demanding if you agree to a vegas residency. People like britney and Katy perry do a huge show with dance moves, costume changes, pyrotechnics etc.

Adele isn’t really like that, and does seem to have voice issues so it might be that she just can’t cope and shouldn’t have agreed to it.

the whiny divorce single isn’t that all of them?
I think she has done some good songs but the lyrics annoy me. It’s basically “i’m sad that we’re not together so you have to let me pester you.” I always think if I was the bloke’s new partner I’d be decked right off.

QueenPeony · 22/01/2022 11:01

fecked

Joystir59 · 22/01/2022 11:01

No way would I waste another penny on her performances or records after this. She is bang out of order.

teddyclown · 22/01/2022 11:03

@DoctorSnortles

YANBU...and I know it's not the most important thing but is anyone else transfixed by her scary bear claws in that footage? Terrifying!
Yes!!
Colourmeclear · 22/01/2022 11:05

Her first new release was ",Go easy on me". I think she is having a lot of personal issues and calling it off last minute is ridiculous. I think she's incredibly insecure and hope she gets support so she can be better prepared to deliver for her fans.

Moneypennysfreedomfund · 22/01/2022 11:05

She’s a drama queen and copious articles about her detract from

Pinocchio PM
Cost of living
Turds in waterways
The Dover car park for lorries
And a lot more

It is unprofessional, other artists have had bigger reasons to cancel shows but performed anyway ( Tori Amos played straight after a miscarriage - now that IS a reason to cancel) . I get the sense Adele is an attention seeking drama queen who has cost many of her most ardent fans serious money.

GellerYeller · 22/01/2022 11:08

Not sure if it's been said already as I'm working through the thread but perhaps Adele wanted to tour this album. But because of covid so many previous postponed tours mean venues are booked up with those.

Our local event space is by no means an arena but has unusually a list type acts booked there now that would normally play bigger venues for example.
Is it possible that Adele's management saw a Vegas residency as an alternative to touring (and massive cash grab)?
