To think Adele’s been shockingly unprofessional?

Adele was due to start a Las Vegas residency at Caesar’s Palace this weekend and cancelled the entire thing less than 24 hours ahead of time, saying they weren’t ready for a number of different reasons.

FIL had bought tickets to the opening night for himself and MIL as a 40th wedding anniversary present, they had pretty much just checked into their hotel when she announced it wasn’t going ahead, and the cost of that and their flights is now money down the drain. DH and I and BIL and SIL were planning on taking them away for a family weekend at Easter but have instead offered to pay for travel and accommodation when (if?) it gets rescheduled.

I get that covid is fucking a lot of things up for a lot of people, but surely they could have faced reality a bit sooner? Even one more day’s notice would have saved so many people taking flights and checking into hotel rooms that they could have rebooked or been refunded for.

I don't know, I doubt it was Adele personally who cancelled at such short notice, her management team would have done it. Everyone hopes performances will go ahead and they try hard to achieve this but sometimes a last minute cancellation is inevitable. I have a close relative in the entertainment industry who, in 'normal' times tours the world and he has had a couple of such cancellations over the years.

It's disappointing all round.

@ElftonWednesday

I may be wrong, but I don't think you could put a show on in Vegas which involves sitting on a chair on an empty stage. And it isn't just "Adele fans" that would be watching with a residency, it's people who have gone to Las Vegas for a holiday and would like to see a show. There are lots to choose from, apparently, and presumably they have certain expectations as to what a Vegas show looks like.
But as a one-off, to prove the show must go on, which is very in keeping with the Vegas spirit, I'm sure would've been fine. Everyone loves a trier.
BringYourOwnBoris · 22/01/2022 09:40

The concert should go ahead. Her music is such wet drivel, it's hardly likely that her fans would notice if it was any worse.

StCharlotte · 22/01/2022 09:40

As suggested by pp surely she could have done an "unplugged" show which would be amazing. I can't believe she couldn't find some a spare sound engineer and someone to guide a spotlight in Vegas...

ajandjjmum · 22/01/2022 09:40

We were driving down to London for the 2017 (?) show at Wembley, when we heard on the radio it was cancelled. We were gutted - had treated ourselves to the Shard and it was going to be a really special weekend with DB and SIL.

DD had been earlier in the week to see her, and said it was an amazing show.

We paid an absolute fortune for the concierge to get us tickets to 'something' that night, and it turned out to be 'Bat out of Hell' - it was fantastic, and really rescued our weekend.

Funny how Adele and Meatloaf are both (sadly) in the news now.

SensiTreev · 22/01/2022 09:40

Adele comes across as a narcissist.

What's with the crocodile tears? Own up and apologise to your fans in a grown up and sincere manner. They will have lost annual leave and cash. How utterly self absorbed to be sobbing to the very people you have let down, is she hoping for the #bekind mob to take her side?

Why not take some bloody responsibility, rather than the "dog ate my homework sir" I am such a poor rich famous girl, don't you feel for me PR stunt? Will she have to pay her fans back?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 22/01/2022 09:41

I don't claim to know how to run a show... but why she didn't just go ahead with a completely stripped back version? Just her and a piano would have been incredible. Fans would have applauded her 'show must go on' attitude. The tears are just ridiculous. I feel sorry for all the people who've lost ££s.

Wheresthebeach · 22/01/2022 09:41

Completely unprofessional - I think there's more to it. It's not like Covid is new, and giving people no notice is completely unacceptable. As others have said she's done it before, and I expect she'll do it again.

I read somewhere that she suffers terrible stage fright, and that she's a recording artist, not a performer. I don't think Covid was the reason.

whysitspicey · 22/01/2022 09:41

@NotNowAlan

Surely it's not up to Adele to decide these things? She must have very well paid management who plan and oversee such massive and expensive productions. Can't see how she can be blamed if the show has to be postponed due to circumstances beyond her control? (and I'm not even a fan)
This. It's obvious that Adele is just the face of this and is now getting the flak for it. Amazes me still how people think actors/celebs/musicians are the ones in charge of everything.

That doesn't explain cancelling 12 months of dates.
Abraxan · 22/01/2022 09:43

I'm quite sure they have the moment to throw at getting it sorted.

Heck, the One Love concert, involving serval artists, many travelling from overseas, all planned last minute was pit together and took place within about 2-3 weeks, wasn't it?

If they really wanted it to happen they could definitely find a way, I'm quite sure.

ajandjjmum · 22/01/2022 09:43

Vegas is an amazing place for a show. When I was 21 I paid a month's salary to see Diana Ross at Caesar's Palace. Always remember what a fantastic evening it was.

RevolvingPivot · 22/01/2022 09:44

I used to like her music. Since the self obsessed "an evening with" and exaggerated "geezer bird" accent and fake nerves I've really gone off her.

Not relayed whatsoever. Anyone know if her ex moved to America too? Just wondered how they share custody of their son.

Wonnle · 22/01/2022 09:44

@Blinky21

Can't bear Adele and don't get the national obsession with her. She should have cancelled a week ago, there's no way she didn't know then the liklihood she'd have to cancel and like PP can't believe they can't rustle up staff in Vegas to step in
Not just me then
BalloonSlayer · 22/01/2022 09:44

A friend was due to see her a couple of years ago (didn't think it was as long ago as 2017 but perhaps it was) but the concert got cancelled, it was one of the last of the tour.

Due to this, had I been wanting to see Adele in Vegas I would definitely have booked one of the earlier performances, because I don't think she has the staying power to see out a long season. But now she is cancelling the start!

She will soon just be regarded as unreliable and people won't risk booking at all for fear of her bailing on them.

Leonthelobster · 22/01/2022 09:47

just don’t think she really wanted to do the shows. She always says she hates singing live. It’s not as if her shows are a big deal, it’s just her singing, I’m sure it could have been sorted if she really wanted it. She said she’d reschedule the 2017 dates but never did. Doubt she’ll reschedule this. She lets a lot of people down, not just fans but people who would have been working on the show. Getting seriously bored with her woe is me shtick.

Totally agree. It’s as flaky as hell. She has form for this. She should stick to being a recoding artist and pack the tours in. She says she hates them and has crippling stage fright. I think she announced the tour to promote her latest album and now that’s out she’s realised she now has a tour and isn’t up for it. Her style of singing wouldn’t get through a long tour either. It’s too punishing on the vocal chords and throat to be yelling that loud/often. Her shows don’t rely on special effects. It’s literally ok to have a piano and herself. Her reasons for cancelling sound like things you could get round if you wanted to.

Giraffesandbottoms · 22/01/2022 09:48

She seems to have a bit of a stage fright issue IMO.

Spot on!

Crikeyalmighty · 22/01/2022 09:49

I work in this industry— this would have been obvious 10 days ago— unless she herself as a solo performer had covid- or was ill —everything else can be covered off — even if you had to announce a pared down ‘show’ — shockingly bad diva behaviour— she’s really not that great either. Just hyped beyond belief, I can find you 20 girl club /cruise singers who can hold a tune just as well within a few hours.

Trilley · 22/01/2022 09:51

@Bananarama21

There's plenty of other shows to go see and do out there and see Adele. It can't be helped at the moment.
Clearly it could have been helped, with better foresight and organisation.
2022booklover · 22/01/2022 09:51

Nevada is in the middle of a Covid peak - just like we were at the start of December. While 24hrs is very short notice - consider if that had been a London date then. We were all happily gearing up to Christmas parties that then didn’t happen.

ttcstinks · 22/01/2022 09:53

@Pawprintpaper

I personally think it does women a disservice when prominent women resort to crying to deflect criticism and turn it to sympathy (a bit drama triangley for me) I thought the same with Allegra Stratton. It’s one think to have an uncontrolled wobble in the voice (which happens to men and women at times) but the elaborate tearful videos are just for effect. Likewise Sam Smith filming one’s self crying on the doorstep in lockdown.
Exactly this. I started a recent thread about women crying and I got flames though so probably best not to generalise about women and waterworks
Clawdy · 22/01/2022 09:56

That fake crying! She certainly won't be offered acting roles any time soon!

AlternativePerspective · 22/01/2022 09:56

I think people think that things are pretty much back to 'normal' they aren't, not even close to the normal we had. Expectations haven't been adjusted and so while it's hard for those who have tickets hasn't anyone considered that this might have happened due to Covid? this has nothing to do with COVID. If it was related to COVID then she would have cancelled the first couple of gigs, not an entire residency.

And some of those tickets were £600. Shock and that’s before people shelled out on flights to go and see her.

Thing is, people say people wouldn’t fly to Vegas to see her but fact is they would if that was the only place she was performing.

Well quite.

If you are planning a show during a pandemic, what was your contingency planning for that? Why would you let things run to the wire? Only to go 'oh dear me, we fucked it'?

No. You would have a plan b in case things went tits up. If you were competent.

If she has covid herself, why not be honest about it? And why cancel the whole residence?

It doesn't make sense.
