To think Adele’s been shockingly unprofessional?

Adele was due to start a Las Vegas residency at Caesar’s Palace this weekend and cancelled the entire thing less than 24 hours ahead of time, saying they weren’t ready for a number of different reasons.

FIL had bought tickets to the opening night for himself and MIL as a 40th wedding anniversary present, they had pretty much just checked into their hotel when she announced it wasn’t going ahead, and the cost of that and their flights is now money down the drain. DH and I and BIL and SIL were planning on taking them away for a family weekend at Easter but have instead offered to pay for travel and accommodation when (if?) it gets rescheduled.

I get that covid is fucking a lot of things up for a lot of people, but surely they could have faced reality a bit sooner? Even one more day’s notice would have saved so many people taking flights and checking into hotel rooms that they could have rebooked or been refunded for.

I’ve never heard of Katie Melua.

I absolutely loved Dido,
there were some great female artists in the late 90s and early noughties that have just disappeared , Alanis Morrisette? Haven’t heard anything in soo long.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 23/01/2022 14:55

Alanis Morisette is touring this summer

there's a thing on youtube via vogue - 73 questions with adele. vomit worthy imo but she's asked about the grenfell thing and she said "it was round the corner from my house in london" (notthing hill/holland park?? not sure) and "i hope it helped them that i did things for them".
lots of people do nice things and don't have to mention it in an interview.
plus she was talking about it in the past tense so i don't think she's doing much with/for them now.

i really feel for the people who had tickets and had spent the money. sigh.

(fwiw i am going to see barry humphries and i hope he's still alive. well. performing. etc. in may in this year).
precarious stuff.
plus also "name a business that isn't show" - is a joke of some sort and i think it's very funny although i can't remember what the actual joke is.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 23/01/2022 14:58

Dido did quite a few gigs in 2019 and was intending to tour this year but it’s currently on hold due to Covid

OhWhyNot · 23/01/2022 15:07

Holland Park is up the road to Notting hill you will walk into it and not realise (NH has rough and very very upmarket parts)

Her PR would have had a say in the questions as well as her comeback album it’s all a package of a legend being sold to us. She was never seen as a cool now suddenly she is clever PR

She is bland that has been her appeal Up to now I think the new open to talking about her emotions and crying on TV Adele is more appreciated in the US (her target audience now) than here.

She lives in LA money and marketing is what she is about now not the down to earth women with the good voice who you could have a drink with down the pub

And let’s not forget that she has on more then one occasion moaned about paying tax of her vast fortune Hmm

TwentyFirstCenturyTricoteuse · 23/01/2022 15:52

I mean I'm not a huge Ed Sheeran fan but at least his views on tax are sound 😂

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 23/01/2022 17:04

I miss Mulligan and O'Hare.....

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 23/01/2022 17:09

Now that's what i call music......

Seemslikeagoodidea · 23/01/2022 17:54

@Twattergy

I'm lucky enough to have heard Adele.sing, just her and a piano for a small studio performance.(this is about 11 years ago). It was stunning and I don't get why she couldn't have at least done a shorter show like that, and made a positive of it.
Same experience here, so I agree that a stripped down show could have worked well for her, provided her voice/stagefright was not an issue. I much preferred the old Adele, I find her a bit OTT now.
DrSbaitso · 23/01/2022 18:45

I'd definitely pay to see this tribute act.

Clearly the issue isn't that the "show ain't ready" because there is no way that the actual staging and venue wasn't ready - this is Vegas, they stage massive shows at Ceasers Palace on a practically daily basis - there is no way that they got to 24hrs before the first performance and realised that they didn't have the equipment/stage crew they needed, especially in Las Vegas where you throw a stone and hit 10 techies who all have a garage full of equipment.

Therfore it has to be a personal issue - either anxiety about performing or a medical issue - but if it was a medical issue then Adele would have garnered a lot more sympathy if she admitted that she was physically unable to perform due to I'll health, and if it was anxiety then this is not an unknown issue (she has been very public with her anxiety about performing) and she should have had contingencies in place for if she started having anxiety attacks etc in the few days before her residency was due to open. I myself have anxiety and whilst I still suffer the odd anxiety attack when I do something new or intimidating, I've had enough therapy to have multiple different coping strategies to help deal with the anxiety - you can't tell me that a multi millionaire wouldn't have had some therapy to help her anxiety.

So instead she gives a half arsed "tearful" apology, which doesn't reimburse her fans who have spent their hard earned money on yet another cancelled live performance. I have a friend who was on a flight to Las Vegas when the announcement was made and she was absolutely heartbroken - she had spent her savings on tickets to the opening weekend and family/friends gifted her the money to pay for flights and hotels as Christmas and birthday gifts. She is not on the breadline and is comfortably off but it is still a massive amount of money to just write off. If it wasn't for the Adele concert she would not have gone to Las Vegas as it is not somewhere she would go on holiday. She has family in New York and if she was going to have a random week in the USA then she would have flown out to see them as opposed to going to Vegas - if the announcement had even been made the day before she could have changed her flights and hotel reservations to New York instead and gone to see her family, instead she is in Vegas, which is not her scene, just getting more and more pissed off at the waste of her time and money, knowing that there is no way she will be able to attend any rescheduled show (not that she would want to take the risk at this point) if they ever do get rescheduled.

CPL593H · 23/01/2022 20:16

@justasking111

Kate Bush another one who packed it in. Adele is not a live performer and won't be on the grand scale she doesn't have the backbone for it. I don't blame her for it but think she should just own up,
Loathe as I am to mention Kate Bush and Adele in the same sentence, Kate Bush didn't behave like this and when she did decide to gig again, it was a great event.

The same option is open to Adele, studio albums with linked video content (easier than ever now) but I don't think it will bring in £500 000 a night. She should though, she has made her pile and there is no shame in not wanting long tours/residences. There is shame in flaking out on your fans in this melodramatic fashion.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 23/01/2022 20:19

Papers running with the show not going on due to set design and running order rammies.

Covid my arse.

BorderlineHappy · 24/01/2022 04:57

Is there any chance she's pregnant?

PepInYourStep · 24/01/2022 05:16

I think there's something else going on here that she can't or reasonably won't talk about.

Either that or she's a ridiculous diva who should have just got on with it, perfect show or not.

BoodleBug51 · 24/01/2022 09:25

Coldplay are the furthest thing from beige live, I can assure you. Their shows are an amazing blend of music, audience participation and effort...... from lighting to pyrotechnics. When we saw them at the RAH in London promoting Ghost Stories, with just a small audience, it was spine tingling good..... and Headful of Dreams was probably the best stadium show I've ever been to. It was so good we went 3 times and spent a fortune.

They are consumate professionals when it comes to live shows, whether you like or loathe their music. Adele could do with talking to Chris Martin who gives 100% of himself on stage, always.

newyear1 · 24/01/2022 10:43

I saw Coldplay a few months ago at The Shepherds Bush Empire and the lighting effects were amazing.

Ed Sheehan shuffled on as an unannounced guest and played a few songs with no fuss. Give me low-key over Adele's histrionics every time.

TwentyFirstCenturyTricoteuse · 24/01/2022 10:55

Is there any chance she's pregnant?

Who knows? but if she is she should have said "health problems" and not laid herself open to having her arse sued off by the venue for general flakiness.

DrSbaitso · 24/01/2022 12:27

@BorderlineHappy

Is there any chance she's pregnant?
There's always a chance but it seems unlikely she would have found out the day before opening night and have it necessitate cancelling the whole run.
justasking111 · 24/01/2022 13:44

Ummmm pregnant didn't Mariah work??

RedToothBrush · 24/01/2022 14:51

Why would being pregnant affect Adele's vocal chords? Does being pregnant usually affect people's ability to work? And if that was the reason, why use covid as an excuse rather than because of health (which you probably have better insurance cover against - or at least should do if you are multi millionaire with such a large tour commitment).

And why the day before the show?

Thats an utterly sexist remark.

Scottishnewbie2022 · 24/01/2022 15:05

I heard an old clip of her on the radio this morning talking about when her ex cheated on her and she went to a club, hit him then went home and wrote Chasing Pavements. Surprised that’s not been made more of in the media! Unless it was at the time and I just missed it.

DrSbaitso · 24/01/2022 16:18

Well if she's newly pregnant she might be unwell with morning sickness or be having a high risk pregnancy. I'd have thought that if that were the case, though, she would issue a statement or a composed video message explaining that it was down to health reasons, and most likely with a bit more notice.

whynotwhatknot · 24/01/2022 21:03

Peter kay didnt cancel because of stage fright he was unwell
