To think Adele’s been shockingly unprofessional?

Adele was due to start a Las Vegas residency at Caesar’s Palace this weekend and cancelled the entire thing less than 24 hours ahead of time, saying they weren’t ready for a number of different reasons.

FIL had bought tickets to the opening night for himself and MIL as a 40th wedding anniversary present, they had pretty much just checked into their hotel when she announced it wasn’t going ahead, and the cost of that and their flights is now money down the drain. DH and I and BIL and SIL were planning on taking them away for a family weekend at Easter but have instead offered to pay for travel and accommodation when (if?) it gets rescheduled.

I get that covid is fucking a lot of things up for a lot of people, but surely they could have faced reality a bit sooner? Even one more day’s notice would have saved so many people taking flights and checking into hotel rooms that they could have rebooked or been refunded for.

It's got to be performer based, 24 hours before on a massive show and everything is in and ready to go. Especially on a stationary show in a venue. That last day is all final checks etc etc. The commodity here is Adele, not anything that needed to be delivered. Also with all the other residencies in Vegas theres plenty of everything equipment wise. Theres also plenty of session and supporting performers.

RevolvingPivot · 22/01/2022 11:34

She should just be honest.

If it was down to her management / state staff then she needs to find new ones.

If it was Covid / nerves / personal issues she should say.

However non of those mean the whole tour has to be cancelled??

LakieLady · 22/01/2022 11:35

@ExtraOnion

Overhyped and Diva

Her best performance? Singing acoustic at The Brits. I’d she was really arsed about her fans, she would get onstage with a guitarist, and sing a few songs - it’s does not have to be a massive gig .. something is better than nothing

I just listened to a bit of that on YT.

It's not acoustic at all, she's using a mic, you can clearly hear a bit of echo, possibly a hint of reverb and loads of EQ. Plus probably a lot of stuff I've never even heard of (sound engineering has moved on a lot in the 20 years or so since I was last present at a sound check!).

As one of my techie muso mates used to say, it takes a lot of skill and experience to make something sound natural!

Blackberrybunnet · 22/01/2022 11:35

YA defintitely NBU

Pikaso · 22/01/2022 11:36

Pearl Jam did this to us. We’d travelled to London, checked into a hotel etc, found out later that day via Twitter that the gig was cancelled as Eddie had a sore throat. I was fuming.

Foolsrule · 22/01/2022 11:37

I think it’s pathetic. Someone so big should have contingency plans in place. Her whole team should be ashamed of themselves. They’re nothing short of con artists!

LakieLady · 22/01/2022 11:38

@KatherineJaneway

I would like to know why she left it so late. I suspect there were armies of lawyers involved considering the sums of money around this but it makes her look very bad.
The 30 hours she referred to could well have been the time they spent in consultation with the lawyers!
CovidCorvid · 22/01/2022 11:38

The fact she’s cancelled the whole run makes it seem like it isn’t just a case of not being ready. Because surely if you were just “not ready” you could be ready for next weekend? Even if she isn’t ready it’s so unprofessional and something it appears she has a reputation for. The papers are suspecting nerves/stage fright.

Twospaniels · 22/01/2022 11:38

Surely as a base she needs a microphone, speakers and backing band and singers. I would have thought they could have managed that for a few days while they got everything else sorted. Very poor.

I have more sympathy for that. If someone is ill then they’re ill.

No doubt she'll be releasing a new album next year with droney miserable songs about how she was depressed about cancelling her shows!

Doyourememberthetime · 22/01/2022 11:40

It must be awful for those to at have tickets. However, shows do get cancelled so you should always have a plan especially if you are flying abroad! I don’t get the appeal of Adele, and It I’m surprised others agree. Give me celine Dion any day!

daisychain01 · 22/01/2022 11:43

Adele should never have agreed to such a big commitment. She suffers badly from stage fright and imposter syndrome. She hates audience applause, because it makes her vulnerable. I cannot imagine the stress of all that.

Doing a scaled back show wouldn't work, she committed to months of shows that were never ever going to happen. She would never agree to doing anything less that what was originally on offer. All or nothing.

It must be incredibly difficult having an extraordinary talent like that and having to sustain it year on year, with the continued pressure of expectation from fans, production companies, agents to keep going. Artists can be in danger of becoming cash-cows.

Not say it isn't massively disappointing to people who have now spent £000's travelling to see her. I can see it from her perspective though. It puts me off ever planning to go to a live concert of hers or anyone else's with all that money at stake.

100problems · 22/01/2022 11:45

@daisychain01 she could just stop though.

She, her child and grandchildren never need work again.

KatherineJaneway · 22/01/2022 11:46

The 30 hours she referred to could well have been the time they spent in consultation with the lawyers!

But the lawyers would be aware that cancelling at the last minute would have a huge negative impact. For them to push it to the last minute damages Adele and her brand.

trickytimes · 22/01/2022 11:48

Yep that’s terrible behaviour and I have no idea why people support her. She comes across as very self obsessed. I hope your family can enjoy Vegas now they are there. Pay for them to do a helicopter trip into the Grand Canyon with champagne. It’s awesome and much better than listening to her warble on for hours anyway.

Omicrone · 22/01/2022 11:50

I wonder if she never wanted to do Vegas in the first place? It's a very different vibe to what she is probably used to I think, and also cements her as one of the 'greats' up there with Barabara, Celine and Britney and maybe that is just too much for her to handle? The pressure be huge! And we all know that the higher you rise, the further there is to fall.

100problems · 22/01/2022 11:50

That is completely different though as it's unforeseen.

Adele is implying this is production issues. I've been to big Vegas shows; it's a city that does big scale productions as standard.

If a person of her standing wanted it enough, those shows would be happening.

blippishutup · 22/01/2022 11:51

If you are announcing something big in the pandemic, then you should have plan b and c ready. I feel sorry for those that have spent thousands to go and see her and to be betrayed like that last minute where people have already checked in hotels or already in mid air. It doesn't take 24 hours before the event to realise whether it's ready or not. She should have given more notice. I think this is a good lesson for her fans to not over inflate her ego. She isn't the most amazing singer to be worth flying for in my opinion anyway let alone to trust her again after the last stunt she pulled in London! And her video, she couldn't sound more detached and disinterested. She is overhyped and most likely had a diva tantrum last minute hence why leaving it last minute.

LuckyAmy1986 · 22/01/2022 11:52

Do people really still think she's down to earth? I think she lost that years ago! I don't get the appeal at all. She's a talented singer, but so, so overrated IMO. There are so many better singers out there!

Alondra · 22/01/2022 11:52

I agree. She cancelled shows in London in 2017 because her vocal chords. She cancelled shows in Sydney because she didn't feel well. She is now cancelling shows because of Covid.

People are paying big money to attend her concerts and she doesn't seems to get how much of a responsibility that is. If she dosn't want to tour or think is too much work, she can do what Straisand did, cancel all touring. But no shows and sobbing are getting old and she's already been branded as a lazy performer.

KindaKings · 22/01/2022 11:54

On a related but slightly different note, what is going on with British pop charts ATM? The songs are shitter than shit.

blippishutup · 22/01/2022 11:54

I think if she had said she now has tested for covid would have been more believable than saying "oh I'm soh soh sorry, the show ain't ready".
