80s, good point on the different types of voters. I'm in a red wall ex mining community, so most will have voted Labour in the past. It's the swing voters that will make the next election result.

jgw1 · 24/01/2022 15:28

I think it is also important to remember that Cummings isn't the only source for these stories.
The parties before on the eve of the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral were a long time after he left for example.

the80sweregreat · 24/01/2022 15:28

I'm sure that the current Mrs J is too busy with the children and her own life to worry that much , she is young and probably thinks it ll go away once the report is out. She is probably cursing Mr C though.
Either that, or she is on the phone to Lulu what's it asking her how to steam off expensive wallpaper ..

Florianus · 24/01/2022 15:28

@CryingAtTheDiscotheque

Dominic Cummings has tweeted today: "... And expect the parties story to roll on AFTER SG report cos photos etc will not be given to the Cabinet Office." I wonder if he knows there are photos/has photos himself?
He's quite probably just angling for more people to sign up to his website: £10 a month, folks.
Notonthestairs · 24/01/2022 15:32

@Blossomtoes

Cummings is a very astute political operator, the timing will be carefully calculated. If it had been released at the time there would have been far more “He’s doing a good job at a very difficult time” nonsense. It was just after eye test gate so he’d have been accused of “Look over here” tactics to deflect attention from himself. Cummings knows exactly what he’s doing.
Agree. I don't think he does much out of the goodness of his heart.

My family are Conservative members and they want rid.

As does that well known Remainer David Davis!

Yes, I agree *@jgw1*. In the (inexplicable) absence of a police inquiry there should have been an independent inquiry with proper powers to compel evidence. Instead, Johnson went for the "quick win" of an internal inquiry with limited powers and limited terms of reference, which he will try to pass off as something else. None of this is SG's fault.
At the danger of repeating myself, judicial enquiries frequently take years and cost a fortune.
the80sweregreat · 24/01/2022 15:34

Oh, my friend would never vote anything but Conservative. She is lovely , but her family are all tories ; she thinks Boris Johnson has done a great job and this is just a blip.witch hunt etc etc
(If this was Jeremy Corbyn having a knees up back then , she would want him hanging , the old ' commie' )
We agree not to talk politics , but she is the typical ' working class tory '
( I'm very much working class too , just not a conservative one)

Rainbunny · 24/01/2022 15:34

I'm afarid I don't have sympathy for her. She knew exactly who she was getting into bed with and she's fine with who he is.

22itsallnew · 24/01/2022 15:35

@JaniieJones *I kind of feel Cummings has missed the boat really. Most people (except those who want to oust Johnson and attempt to reverse Brexit) don't really care anymore, far more concerned with more pressing matters like Ukraine.

And you base this on? As the opinion polls on Johnson suggest otherwise

Florianus · 24/01/2022 15:36

Although when asked on the radio this morning if he had put a letter in to the 1922 Committee, Davis firmly declared that he had not done so - but possibly might do so after studying SG's findings.

ClaudineClare · 24/01/2022 15:40

Actually wanting to be PM in 2022 is like a reverse intelligence test and it's not surprising that Rishi Sunak is said to really not want the job yet, he wants BoJo to stay in place for the inevitable misery of 2022

Agree with this, but I wonder if Johnson will get fed up of the never ending flack (because we know he likes to be the darling of the public, which he so is not right now) and resign of his own accord?

As for Cummings' timing. I think he has waited until Johnson was potentially on the brink of being able to claim he had steered England/UK successfully through the pandemic, vaccine triumph, recovering economy etc.

Cummings has blown all that to smithereens. Now, instead of being remembered as the PM who got Brexit "done" and saved us all from Covid, Johnson will be remembered as the most incompetent, lazy and corrupt PM of modern times, who partied while the people suffered.

Spot on @ClaudineClare. That makes complete sense.

the80sweregreat · 24/01/2022 15:44

If it's Liz truss takes it on, she'll be sorry. There is a lot going on and BJ will leave huge turds to clean up , no doubt about it and a fractured party too.
I'd rather another man takes on all the flack to be honest! Just who though ?
They are all terrible.

Drivingbuttercup · 24/01/2022 15:47

They've got away with so much, let covid be done with and then they'll replace him and then all will be forgotten. The media are after him, the media has always controlled what the public think. They managed to get the twit in power by getting millions to vote for him. Now the same millions want him out, the powers above him have got what they wanted out of him and now that everyone's a winner (apart from the public) it's time to toss him out. The whole thing is very well planned.

Blossomtoes · 24/01/2022 15:47

Another one bites the dust. I’d hate to be Mrs J right now.

Sunak might go in hiding for a while, Anti fraud minister Lord Agnew quits over "lamentable" govt record on tackling fraud in Covid business schemes.

Happened moments ago in the HOL

Rishi Sunak knows where the fridge is., it's that way ..

Remember £4.3 billion written off!

Lord Agnew said that it was not an attack on the PM...

To be really enjoying Boris Johnson's downfall Part 2
Trilley · 24/01/2022 16:08

I look at how Boris was in the months preceding Covid and there was an energy about him that seemed to disappear after having Covid

Not really. He's always been incredibly lazy. Notoriously when he was Mayor he left all the difficult stuff to his underlings. The difference is simply that the pandemic threw his laziness into sharp relief because what we needed was a PM who was prepared to be very proactive.

Florianus · 24/01/2022 16:14

Remember £4.3 billion written off!

£4.3 billion written off despite Rishi Sunak spending £100 million and employing a 1,265-strong anti-fraud taskforce to try to get the money back.
BashStreetKid · 24/01/2022 16:18

At the danger of repeating myself, judicial enquiries frequently take years and cost a fortune.

And frequently they don't. Someone like Lady Hale who is reasonably available since her retirement would be ideal.

Florianus · 24/01/2022 16:30

According to the Institute for Government, the average length of public inquiries in recent times is 2 years, although one took 13 years to report back.

UnicornsReal · 24/01/2022 16:34

@Hawkins001

Although does anyone consider that it could be Boris being setup with regards to certain events ?
Exactly.
