In normal times an exhausted and ill PM would have delegated a lot and eased his workload whilst he concentrated on getting himself well but these are not normal times and he has had to be front and centre in the worlds spotlight whilst being extremely ill.

In normal times a sick PM would resign - Macmillan, Eden. In Macmillan's case it was a tired Government beset by scandals e.g. the Profumo affair. In Eden's case he'd made a complete mess with Suez, so he knew the game was up. Eden especially had been popular and successful before that.

Both then went on to live for another 20 odd years.

But these are not normal times and Johnson will have to be carried out kicking and screaming, not because he's got no-one to delegate to, although having kicked out the decent MPs from the party, there is an element of truth there, but because he's power crazed. Carrie too will want to enjoy her new wallpaper.

@ClaudineClare

CryingAtTheDiscotheque perhaps the police concerned were worried about their jobs if they spoke out?
Yes, perhaps. Even though police officers take an oath to uphold the law, I think I would agree it isn't realistic to expect junior officers to speak out against their seniors. That makes the situation worse though! I really don't see how the Met can defend this.
Blossomtoes · 24/01/2022 10:20

Johnson would not recognise truth, whether about his private or political life, if confronted by it in an identity parade.

Max Hastings, his former boss, said that in July 2019. What was his excuse pre Covid?

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 24/01/2022 10:21

If he's too ill with long COVID to do the job properly, he should resign.
God I've heard it all now!

Peregrina · 24/01/2022 10:22

Long covid used as a cover for a liver pickled by alcohol?

ClaudineClare · 24/01/2022 10:28

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Long Covid is used as an excuse for him resigning. Poor, brave "Boris", soldiering on all this time when he was too busy partying too ill to do the job properly.

As for having two babies whilst in office, well that was his choice.

and/or a slightly battered septum....

Why can't they publish the report in full? Identifying details could easily be redacted.

Long covid is probably used as an excuse by lots of people to get paid time off work.

longwayoff · 24/01/2022 10:50

Not all of us live to the standards you embrace User764832

User764832 · 24/01/2022 10:53

I don't need an excuse as I don't need to work

Blossomtoes · 24/01/2022 10:54

@ClaudineClare

Why can't they publish the report in full? Identifying details could easily be redacted.
But should they be redacted? If people working in Downing Street broke the law, why should their identity be protected? After all, 70 of the 100 people Reynolds invited to bring their own booze to a not party had the common sense - or decency - to decline the invitation.
Curiousmouse · 24/01/2022 11:01

Surely MPs will see they are being played, and will never see that report in full, as it was written. It's already obvious.

Are you saying that Boris is responsible for his children? This is outrageous.

True, but the nice part of me doesn't want to see young, junior civil servants dragged though the mire for stupidly following the lead of their seniors. I don't think that would help anyone. It is those at the top of the office who need to be held to account.

Curiousmouse · 24/01/2022 11:16

I suppose it depends how junior they are.

Blossomtoes · 24/01/2022 11:17

I don’t think it does. If they broke the law they’re culpable.

jgw1 · 24/01/2022 11:26

They might be giving evidence of others breaking the law, in which case redacting their names might be appropriate. I also think that it would be appropriate to redact any email addresses.
the80sweregreat · 24/01/2022 12:19

Allegra had to resign ( I doubt she chose to lose her job somehow ) and she wasn't even at these parties.

LolaLouLou · 24/01/2022 12:35

I think at some point the full report will be leaked. Johnson has very few friends left.

Blossomtoes · 24/01/2022 12:38

I think so too.

I feel that Dominic Cummings will do this maybe? .
CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 24/01/2022 14:21

Dominic Cummings has tweeted today: "... And expect the parties story to roll on AFTER SG report cos photos etc will not be given to the Cabinet Office."
I wonder if he knows there are photos/has photos himself?

Rainbunny · 24/01/2022 14:21

When he was first elected I said then that I didn't know how or when but he would leave Number 10 in a flaming scandal.

It was always going to end in tears for him. He's pathologically dishonest and greedy but his real failing is his laziness. He hasn't had the self-discipline to hide his rule-breaking and stay on top of the lies he tells all day long.
