wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

It annoying when dogs jump on you. Used to live in a flat where the upstairs neighbor's dogs turned the back garden into a muddy mess.
I had to quickly run to my car to avoid my work clothes being muddied by the dogs jumping at me.

I don't think your MIL should pay for the jeans. Maybe your DH can buy you another pair. MIL should clip the dog's nail and train it but she won't.

Kuachui · 21/01/2022 14:41

yabu and sound very up tight

ExConstance · 21/01/2022 14:41

I hope you gave them a good scrub with stain remover, soaked them in cold water and then washed. Most if not all stains will come out if you treat them properly.

WonderfulYou · 21/01/2022 14:42

when all three were meant to be special.

Why would you buy 3 the exact same if they were meant to be special.
And you still have two pairs you can use for special occasions anyway - if they’re so special I wouldn’t be wearing them to my MILs.

If clothes are reduced so much it usually means they’re faulty - your other pairs may not last long either.

Do you have a photo of the scratches?

GirlInACountrySong · 21/01/2022 14:43

Are we all still getting 'reported' by the op if we don't agree??

only on mumsnet!!

Potpourri23 · 21/01/2022 14:44

If the fabric isn't ripped then surely the "mark" you're talking about is just a a bit of dirt from the dog's paws? Which will surely come out in the wash? Confused

CousinKrispy · 21/01/2022 14:45

Hi, OP. I'm sorry your new jeans were damaged so soon after you'd bought them. That's always frustrating.

TBH however it sounds as though the damage is so minimal it's not reasonable to expect your MIL to replace them (at any price). It's the kind of very minimal wear and tear that you expect from everyday life and would have happened sooner or later, from a dog or something else.

It also doesn't sound as though you've bought such a high-priced luxury product that it's worth making a fuss about, which is good news! You can keep wearing these jeans for day to day life and it's no huge deal if they get some minor marks on them.

Learning to deal with wear and tear on clothes is a really good thing for the environment--if you returned the jeans, chances are they would just go straight to a landfill. If you do find there are some marks on your jeans and the sight bothers you, the patch idea suggested above is a good one, there are lots of beautiful ways of covering up the marks.

HRMtheQuern · 21/01/2022 14:45

they're not 'for special occasions.'But they're special in that they're branded when usually I get supermarket ones. The wash cycle is done but don't have a tumble dryer and no where to hang the clothes yet

@HRMtheQuern

I haven't read all responses but surely the people who've had dogs jump up on them had clipped nails? Because MIL's dog has sharp, unclipped nails.

To clarify, the jeans haven't been ripped, just marked. In my OP, I meant 'mostly cotton jeans'. And I'm feeling a bit crap now they're 'bench' brand. I payed £56.97 for 3 pairs and saved £123 because I bought them on sale. Usually I'd go for supermarket brand

Her own dog in her own home....the dogs nails are her own business...you "walked' in, by your own admission, and likely took the dog by surprise
1forAll74 · 21/01/2022 14:46

I wouldn't pay for your ripped jeans, even if one of my cats had clawed at them instead of my sofa..It was just an unfortunate accident. anyway.

ClawedButler · 21/01/2022 14:46

Why should she replace the jeans that are "not as special", when you have two other identical pairs in the wardrobe??

I just....I don't understand. I get that if you had bought one pair of normally expensive jeans and they were trashed, you would be upset. But you bought 3 the same, have 2 that are immaculate and 1 that is so mildly damaged that you need to get right up close to see it!

Would you have requested she replace them if they were supermarket jeans?

Can you still see the mark?
NoVaxDjokovic · 21/01/2022 14:52

@girlmom21 You can buy 32/31 on there, which matches OPs receipt?!

Skilovingmama · 21/01/2022 14:54

Watch out OP. I don’t know if you have DC but if you do and I was your MIL who had to buy new jeans for you (bench is hardly top end anyway and you got them dirt cheap), I’d be down on you like a tonne of bricks if any of your DC spilled anything or did anything that left the tiniest mark on my clothing. Heck, even if a paving stone was loose on your drive, I might ‘trip’ and demand reimbursement for my designed trousers that now had a mark on them.

viques · 21/01/2022 14:55

@KirstenBlest

Do they do neon onsies for cats? DCat is too easily camouflaged
I believe they did at one time, but the companies who made them got so many complaints about how the cats had ruined their owners new jeans as they tried to dress them that they were discontinued.

If it’s any consolation I would imagine supermarket jeans and jeans given a label saying “Bench” are probably off the same production line (plus many other branded jeans). If it’s the case for some designer handbags it’s got to be the same for jeans. All the ones with a tonne of stretch in them snag easily whether you pay £10 or £200. Only the old non stretch thick denim go on forever.
ColletteTheLot · 21/01/2022 14:55

For a small mark, that sounds like a scratch, and by the OP's admission "you can't see unless you look for it", of course you don't get your MIL to buy you a new, expensive pair.

A rip, yes, possibly. Damage that would really affect how and where they could be worn, yeah, possibly. But it doesn't sound like either of these circumstances.

I think, to say you want her to pay because they don't feel as special any more is seriously uptight behaviour.

DeerMyDear · 21/01/2022 14:56

Nope. You’re being precious.

JugglingJanuary · 21/01/2022 14:56

@HRMtheQuern

Well I thought it was nice to get otherwise expensive jeans on a sale that have now been damaged that I don't want to pay to get full price because someone elses dog damaged mine
There aren't any rips or holes, so how has the dog damaged them exactly?

'They don't feel special' isn't damage.

Gonnagetgoing · 21/01/2022 14:56

@inappropriateraspberry

OP, M&M are not a warehouse clearance shop, just cheap clothes! You've paid what they are worth and as skinny jeans won't be made of proper denim fabric. You have to expect they won't last too long at that price, similar to supermarket brands as others have said.
@inappropriateraspberry - agreed here - most skinny jeans I have are made of a slightly thinner fabric than proper jeans. I have had skinny jeans last ages but equally so some which haven't done.

When it says colour migration and 30 degrees wash well 30 degrees to me is either eco or less than 40 degrees which is what most jeans wash at so slightly 'delicate'.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 21/01/2022 14:57

The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged

What does this even mean? Do you own a needle and thread?

Mickarooni · 21/01/2022 14:58

If they’re actually properly damaged then of course you’d be miffed. I’d be mortified if my dog did damage and be immediately offering to pay.

HRMtheQuern · 21/01/2022 14:58

I know cars don't cost as much as jeans but to give an example

Say someone dents your car
'oh you might be able to get that sucked out anyway'
