‘Sorry the colour doesn’t suit my baby’

Laughingstock91 · 21/01/2022 12:07

Sent a friend with a new baby some clothes - one thing was a really pale pink and the other thing was a really pale yellow. It was like a T-shirt and joggers set thing that I got in a small independent shop.

No Thankyou - just a comment that the colours weren’t right. The baby is 3 months old.

Aibu to think I would never have dreamed of making such a comment. I had some really unusual colours but I smiled, said Thankyou & the kids wore them as I was grateful to receive gifts.

I feel really offended- they weren’t cheap either 🤷🏻‍♀️

Maybe the clothes were too gendered and RudeArse wanted gender neutral clothes

Theflying19 · 21/01/2022 13:28

"I'm sorry you feel like that. Do send them back to me" and then you've made no commitments to exchange or whatever and can pass them on to a family in need.
Your acquaintance is displaying Prima-Donna entitlement. Give her a wide berth from now on.

PartyOnKale · 21/01/2022 13:28

@LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood

I’d just say came from an independent shop, not possible to change but if she sends them back to you you will pass them on to someone who’s baby suits those colours!
This is good.
Laughingstock91 · 21/01/2022 13:29

When I saw the outfit, I just thought sweatshirt and joggers, warm and practical for a baby in winter 🤷🏻‍♀️

When I buy a gift it’s because I want to give the recipient something they will like and enjoy using. So I include a gift receipt in case it isn’t to their taste.

Obviously that isn’t the case for many on this thread including the OP.

And the picture example outfit is absolutely not to my taste. It wouldn’t get used here, so would be a complete waste of money. And no I wouldn’t be posting it back to you. She’s got a tiny baby. She doesn’t need extra errands from someone who is meant to be a friend.

Go and collect it. Apologise for not including a gift receipt. Gift a voucher/cash instead while you’re there.

gsaoej · 21/01/2022 13:30

I'd just not bother replying to her message. Really rude. If she bothers you again, send a photo of the receipt if you still have it and the address of the shop.

WeWashEverythingExceptLaundry · 21/01/2022 13:30

The outfit is pretty 'early 90s', tbh (and for a non-mobile baby I would always prefer babygros, or at the very least leggings with feet), but that's my personal taste and means nothing. Your friend has been astoundingly rude. I would be replying 'I'm sorry to hear that. Please return the outfit if you're not going to put X in it' and there would not be a replacement, nor any other gifts in future.

If I'd been given it I would have said a warm thank you and perhaps put the top on over a vest sometimes.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 21/01/2022 13:31
@Needcoffeecoffeecoffee, yes, of course I did. I also thanked people who gave a little stuffed toy, when there really is a limit as to how many small stuffed toys a baby needs.
@kirstenBlest exactly that's what most sensible people do. I just cant understand how rude that message is. There isnt even a thank you!
Weve had some very random presents and always just said thank you. I'm sure I've missed the mark once or twice too but at least my friends have been polite to mind my feelings

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 21/01/2022 13:31

then kiss her boots and flagellate with some birch twigs.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 21/01/2022 13:32

I was just happy to have a plentiful supply of clean clothes for the inevitable changes. Who knew so many women saw their children as little dollies to dress up in their favourite clothes.

Ellie56 · 21/01/2022 13:33

@Cheekypeach

‘No problem, if you return them I’ll get them refunded’.
Shock Rude ungrateful twat.

Do what Cheekypeach said and don't buy any more gifts.

PartyOnKale · 21/01/2022 13:34

That sort of outfit looks so comfortable though I really don't see how I couldn't have used that with all the changes young babies need.

Laughingstock91 · 21/01/2022 13:34

@MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake exactly! That’s how I was too! We didn’t have loads of money and so it was all welcome!

@daphnebasset I've been 'let go' by a lot of friends once they had babies (best example was a close friend who kicked off because I didn't show enough excitement about her PFB who was born 10 days after I had life-saving surgery which rendered me infertile). I used to give slack but now I don't bother. Babies being hard work doesn't suddenly and magically render someone outrageously rude and incapable of basic courtesy, as in this case (or in @nansbigpants' case).

Anyone who expects me to behave like a wise man bestowing (carefully-selected) gifts on the messiah gets gently eased out of my life.

Mariposista · 21/01/2022 13:35

What a vile, spoilt person.

Laughingstock91 · 21/01/2022 13:35

@PartyOnKale it’s just leggings and a top essentially though! That’s the kind of stuff my daughter used to wear all the time!

OP posts:
OutwiththeOutCrowd · 21/01/2022 13:36

What about:

'I’m sorry that Providence has seen fit to give you a baby that does not suit such beautiful colours. Too bad babies don’t come with a receipt!'

(NB: I’m Scottish and we would tend to say ‘the baby suits the colour’ not ‘the colour suits the baby’.)

Enough4me · 21/01/2022 13:36

Don't collect, don't replace, in fact, on reflection, save your time and don't bother replying either.

PartyOnKale · 21/01/2022 13:36

Go collect it and apologise?!
😂

GreetingsAndSalutations · 21/01/2022 13:36

I’d have the stuff back and either get my money back or donate it. She’d get bugger all from me going forward. Ill mannered cow.

RegardingMary · 21/01/2022 13:36

@WonderfulYou

Exactly...
Mine spent the first 6 months if not longer in babygrows and cardigans usually white so they could all be bunged in the wash together. Not dressed in multicoloured sweatshirt sets.

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/01/2022 13:36

That outfit is cute. It wouldn’t be what I’d have chosen for dd, but she would have worn it. It’s an easy to wear lounging around outfit and comfortable to sleep in. Babies do a lot of both. Your friend is very rude!

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 21/01/2022 13:36

Some MNers can have an attack of the vapours over any baby clothes that aren't a 'crisp white baby grow'.
Katyppp · 21/01/2022 13:37

I am relieved to see that most (all? I haven't read the last two pages) posters think this was rude.
I see all sorts of entitled and rude behaviour on MN dressed up as Your Baby Your Rules, hormones, advocating for your baby and the fourth trimester that it's a relief to see there is still some common sense out there!

Diggersaursarethebest · 21/01/2022 13:38

Obviously babies grow up and start having their own opinions on clothes and later on, perfumes and cosmetics. 3 month olds don’t. I have no intention of controlling my child’s clothing once they start showing their own preferences.
But tiny babies are dressed by their parents. I have always been slightly bonkers about my own clothes. I have strong feelings about clothes for my baby too. Putting my tiny baby in something I would never in a million years pick out for them always felt weird. I would never choose a sleepsuit with a stiff peterpan collar because it looks uncomfortable. So I wouldn’t dress my baby in one someone gave me. If I did put it on for a photo or whatever, it feels wrong and like my baby isn’t mine because I wouldn’t put my baby in a stupid uncomfortable collar. My brain just screams ´wrong!’. It’s a visceral reaction, it doesn’t have to be logical.
The smell thing is not just me. Other people’s perfume or worse, traces of cigarette smoke made me want to immediately bathe my baby. Lots of people talk about this one.
