Just curious 🤨

@limitedperiodonly

They stink, they have noisy shit-munching loos that clog up and no plumber will touch and I don't live in a hotel.
They mostly have exactly the same loo as other bathrooms…?
TheSnowyOwl · 21/01/2022 10:48

Mine’s great. You walk through the dressing room to get to it, so don’t really hear any sounds.

Libertynan · 21/01/2022 10:53

I like mine - but it does have a window and doesn't steal space from the bedroom as it's large enough.

However I won't have a poo in there if DH is still in bed because I'm precious about stuff like that.

JugglingJanuary · 21/01/2022 10:54

@RidingMyBike

I hate ours! We're temporarily renting whilst we find a house to buy and I'm viewing it as an experiment in what we'd like to have! So many houses seem to have a titchy en suite shoehorned into a too small bedroom when storage space would be better.

Reasons I hate ours are mainly it's set up:
It's the only bathroom on top floor of a townhouse so if DD needs loo in the night she trots in (complete with commentary). I'm not happy about her navigating the stairs then so it has to be the en suite = disturbed night.
Its light switch is outside the room so you have to turn light on before going in - this puts bright light over the bed = disturbed night for other person. We've turned off the extractor fan as it was SO LOUD!
It's yet another bathroom to clean.

I'd possibly feel differently if it was a large bedroom with en suite off the foot of the bed instead of right next to it. If light was switched on inside en suite and there was a soft/low light option.

I have a couple of 'push' lights in the en-suite until we next have an electrician here. Plenty bright enough for using the toilet at night and the noise/light doesn't disturb anyone else. They're battery operated but last for ages as they're not on long. An option for you?
sHREDDIES19 · 21/01/2022 10:57

We have a cloakroom, family bathroom and then an en suite (with a velux window so nice and light and airy). Now our kids are getting older, it's great as we have our own spaces and getting ready in the mornings is easier.

FudgeSundae · 21/01/2022 10:58

I don’t really understand people who don’t like en suites because of poos. The more bathrooms you have, the more you can avoid other people’s poos? Whereas if you’re all queuing in the morning for one bathroom… yeah that’s a bit grim.
I LOVE not having to emerge from my bedroom until I am completely done, showered and cleaned. Love an en-suite.

amusedbush · 21/01/2022 10:58

I personally wouldn’t want one but that is because I just know DH would shit in it while I was in bed and then leave the door open to make the bedroom stink. So my issue isn’t with en-suites, it’s that DH is grubby but it still boils down to no en-suite for me.

BitcherOfBlakiven · 21/01/2022 10:59

I mean it would be great to have one when I’m having an IBD flare, but I’ve seen too many in new builds where there isn’t even space for a wardrobe but there’s an en-suite. It’s just weird.

silverbubbles · 21/01/2022 11:02

Nothing worse than lying in bed listening or even watching your husband having a crap and then the stench engulfing the room......

Plenty of reasons to hate them

HoppingPavlova · 21/01/2022 11:02

I don’t like or dislike them in general. Depends on the actual ensuite and how it ‘fits’ with that bedroom and house. I’ve had some houses with ensuites i’ve loved and some I’ve hated.

I had one house that had a great ensuite, a Jack n Jill bathroom between 2 bedrooms, and another bathroom. It was a 5 bedder over multiple levels. That Jack n Jill bathroom was the greatest thing ever. At that point, our kids were young enough that their preference was to share bedrooms (even though enough room to have their own). It was so convenient and made life so much easier.

Kotatsu · 21/01/2022 11:03

I have no idea. I very much prefer having my own bathroom (2 boys)..

If I need a wee in the middle of the night it's way easer to walk a few steps to the ensuite than down the hall to the family bathroom (or, the boys bathroom as it is known).

But yes, if i had a partner that would poo in it and stink out the room I was trying to sleep in, it would be an issue. Mind you, I'm not sure it would be the ensuite that was the problem.

Vanillaradio · 21/01/2022 11:03

Love ours. The bedroom is not a funny shape as the en suite was converted from the former tiny box room. It has a window so plenty of light and ventilation. Dh does not use it, he and ds only use the main bathroom so I get it all to myself and it does not stink Grin It has an entirely normal toilet in fact exactly the same as the one in the main bathroom. It's a lot easier getting ready in the morning with 2 bathrooms as well.

Nidan2Sandan · 21/01/2022 11:03

I LOVE my en-suite. This is the first house I have had one and honestly it has changed my life.

I use the toilet ALOT due to medical issues so not traipsing down the hallway 15 times a night is amazing.

Ours is also light, bright and airy. We have a nice big window, a nice big 2 person size shower and plenty of space to also keep things like the laundry basket in there.

I think its madness that anyone would hate having one personally

Gonnagetgoing · 21/01/2022 11:04

My friend's en-suites in their big house in USA are much like most en-suites - nice enough if you have the space but generally here in this country lots of houses don't have the space for a separate bath/shower room.

My DM in her Victorian house which has a huge attic (runs the entire length of the house and the length is very long) has easily got an en-suite in the attic bedroom which includes a bath and separate shower cubicle. She converted the box room into a dressing/en-suite shower room (no toilet) which leads onto the main bedroom. he also had an extension built though which means that the large spare bedroom now has a bathroom and she wanted that with a bath and shower cubicle.

She had the attic room and extension built separately though, and at one point there was a slight panic over how much of the box room she'd use for the staircase into the attic but it wasn't an issue in the end.

When she had a house valuation recently the estate agents said that with the main bathroom and 3 en-suites then that was a lot but that some larger families would like that and also the shower en-suite with no toilet was fine too. They also have a toilet on the ground floor so they have toilets with every bathroom apart from the shower room which is handy I suppose.

Nice idea - I can see how this would work for me however you can't avoid a poo if its in your bedroom and if the dumper point blank refuses to poo anywhere else!!
Gonnagetgoing · 21/01/2022 11:06

In DB's PIL's new build (well 20-30 year new build!) this came with an en-suite option to the main bedroom. To my mind it comes off but you have a long bathroom with bath inside (and shower in it) and then toilet behind it). It's not personally how I'd envisage an en-suite by the DH is disabled and uses a wheelchair so he has a special seat for the bath. His wife uses the main bathroom with separate shower cubicle.

DaveGahansRealWife · 21/01/2022 11:06

I think that people must be hating those tiny cupboard type en suite things because our 2 year old house has an amazing ensuite - it has a double sized shower , a window for smells and to see by at night, huge wall mirror , heated radiator. Would I rather have more storage space? No as we have plenty.

Mydogisagentleman · 21/01/2022 11:07

I love ours.
We have two en-suite shower rooms with windows. Wouldn’t be without them, on top of the downstairs toilet and upstairs bathroom

DaveGahansRealWife · 21/01/2022 11:07

Plus when Dave poos he releases butterflies.

Gonnagetgoing · 21/01/2022 11:07

I don't have an en-suite and don't need one as I live alone. When people come to stay I sometimes think I'd like one. At the very least I'd consider getting a shower room to my bedroom.

You can have more than one toilet/bathroom and still avoid an en suite.

You can have multiple toilets and bathrooms without having an en suite.

Not everyone, obviously. Just saying an en suite isn't the only alternative.

That is just weird.

A well built en suite has a door and often a window. Like a pp I think your problem is your dh is rank.

whoruntheworldgirls · 21/01/2022 11:08

Love mine! It's big, has a large window so great ventilation, light switch inside the bathroom so doesn't blind others in the night, no loss of storage as we have big walk in wardrobes.
My 5yr old also has an en-suite which is great as no disturbances in the night.
Leaves the family bathroom for visitors.

Woodlandarchitect · 21/01/2022 11:09

I didn’t know MN hates en-suites! I don’t think I’ve ever had a client that didn’t request one (usually more)
