As above

As I said, you can judge, and so can I. Not particularly interested.

Purpletomato · 21/01/2022 11:51

I've always voted Labour but next election my vote will go to whichever party that looks most like protecting (natal) women's rights.

I've never been a single issue voter before but this time I am.

DottyDoge · 21/01/2022 11:52

Imaginary???? Has the poster quoted had their head under a rock for the last decade. This is the biggest threat to women's rights, safety and representation for a hundred years and the quoted poster is saying it's "imaginary". You're blind.

Or, I just see things differently and I perceive your point of view as hyperbolic. I get the rhetorical argument (if anyone can say they're a woman, than being a woman becomes meaningless), but I just don't think things will turn out the way you think. I don't see that (in the UK) women's rights are going to be curtailed in any signficant way as a result of trans-rights, I just don't see it happening.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 21/01/2022 12:05

I guess it depends whether you see the loss of womens only refuges, women only support groups for E.g.rape or still birth, programmes designed to increase the representation of women in politics or STEM, the loss of women only sport as a significant curtailment of womens rights

If you don’t then I guess it’s not a problem

HaroldMeeker · 21/01/2022 12:13

If you're happy bring a menstruation, a birthing person, a cervix haver, talking about your race in front of members of the male sex, stripping off in a spa besides people with penises, then yes, I see why you don't have a problem with any of it.

Lucky you, never being traumatised or frightened.

HaroldMeeker · 21/01/2022 12:14

Oh for an edit function.
Menstruator
Rape, not race.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 21/01/2022 12:16

I've left Labour and won't be voting for the party over this issue.

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/01/2022 12:16

@MaverickSnoopy

I've spent years saying I won't vote Labour because of this. I can't vote Tories though, I'm too aghast with them. So I need to think. I may end up voting tactically against Tories. I think if Labour get in then it will have to be protests etc to protect women's spaces and identity.
🤚

We won’t be able to do this soon either. The tories are taking our right to protest away.

I am another, who cannot vote Labour and am politically homeless. I do like the sound of the SDP though!

SmashingBIouse · 21/01/2022 12:20

@BreadInCaptivity

I won't be voting for them on this basis and left the party because of it.
This.
SmashingBIouse · 21/01/2022 12:21

Although fuck knows who I'll vote for because I'd rather eat spiders than vote Tory.

WandaWomblesaurus73 · 21/01/2022 12:22

Me

peachescariad · 21/01/2022 12:22

Labour....absolutely never

FourTeaFallOut · 21/01/2022 12:24

I won't vote Labour again until they give up the misogynistic gender orthodoxy.

Iggly · 21/01/2022 12:25

@Theeyeballsinthesky

I guess it depends whether you see the loss of womens only refuges, women only support groups for E.g.rape or still birth, programmes designed to increase the representation of women in politics or STEM, the loss of women only sport as a significant curtailment of womens rights

^this

I haven’t seen anything to convince me that we would be under greater risk than the Tories, simply because they’ve actually made attempts at this. So I wouldn’t put it past them. At the end of the day, the nastiest people in the Tory party have made quite frankly awful statements to give the impression that they care about sex based rights.

But these lot are just a passing fad. The Tories will revert to vaguely competent politicians and I bet GRA will be back on the cards.

This feels like a single issue which really isn’t relevant right now when people are fucking dying because they can’t afford food. And that’s because of this government.

Sadly, the position we are in is that not voting Labour is effectively handing the Tories the keys again to number 10.

I’d rather we had a better standard of living and then I’ll think about GRA. Until then, fuck the Tories. I’ll vote for whoever kicks them out of my constituency.

Waspie · 21/01/2022 12:27

Me.
I am politically homeless.

Artichokeleaves · 21/01/2022 12:30

Me. Politically homeless, but will vote tactically to keep out candidates most damaging to women and children's safeguarding.

Blessex · 21/01/2022 12:40

@Ereshkigalangcleg it would be catastrophic.

Alcoh · 21/01/2022 12:43

@DottyDoge In the same way, there are many who think it's rather fundamental to vote for the party that on balance, will do the most for women, rather than to reject that for some imagined threat to remove sex based rights.

No party can do ANYTHING for women if we don’t have a legal definition of women. That’s the point. We need to fix this first.

Thoosa · 21/01/2022 12:56

@HyggeLykke

I want to vote but like so many I currently feel politically homeless. I recently came across the SDP website, I didn't know they were still even going. I don't think there is a candidate in my area but I found their policies an interesting read re sex based rights.

TRANSGENDER & BIOLOGICAL SEX-BASED RIGHTS
The liberal pursuit of individual autonomy and desire must be balanced by the common good. Some citizens feel at odds with the physiology and social role associated with their natal sex and can suffer distress. Transgender people should be treated with dignity and respect, in keeping with their acquired gender in most situations. However, these rights must be balanced against the need of natal females for safety and sporting fairness. Biological sex is real and politically significant. This requires an absolute stance on relevant legal definitions in some domains.
POLICY PLEDGES:
Transgender individuals wishing to change their legal sex should be allowed to do so. However, we support the continued necessity for medical gatekeeping in any legal change of sex marker. We oppose proposals that would allow someone to change their legal sex by self-identification only.
We support segregation by biological sex in sport. Fair competition is not secured if male-bodied transgender athletes are permitted to compete in women’s sport and, in the case of contact sports, the risk of injury can increase significantly.
We support segregation by biological sex in prisons and women’s refuges in order to safeguard the safety and privacy of natal females. Separate prisons or prison accommodation should be provided for transgender citizens to ensure their safety and privacy.
Healthcare spending and resources for gender dysphoric individuals, including long-term psychological intervention, should be provided at sufficient levels. Physical or drug-based medical treatments for gender dysphoria should be prohibited for anyone under 18 years of age.
We support the retention of biological sex and gender identity as distinct categories in public sector data gathering such as crime statistics, poverty metrics or public health research.
We support the use of plain English for discussions of biological sex in health and reproductive care.

Yes this is where DD has joined up, and I’m considering it, (will read the whole manifesto properly before deciding), but if they don’t field a candidate here, it doesn’t solve my voting dilemma.

It’s really exercising me.

Thoosa · 21/01/2022 13:03

I would genuinely like to hear your workings out. I’d love to be able to believe something optimistic on this subject.

It’s fundamental that if you cannot legally define a term, you cannot enforce anything relating to that term, surely? How do you consider that rhetoric rather than reasoning?

Thelnebriati · 21/01/2022 13:06

I'm an ex Labour voter in a Labour safe seat. I'll either vote tactically or spoil my ballot, depending on whats happening locally.

DottyDoge · 21/01/2022 13:07

No party can do ANYTHING for women if we don’t have a legal definition of women. That’s the point. We need to fix this first.

That gets repeated a lot, but I don't think it is actually true.

I guess it depends whether you see the loss of womens only refuges, women only support groups for E.g.rape or still birth, programmes designed to increase the representation of women in politics or STEM, the loss of women only sport as a significant curtailment of womens rights

I just don't see them happening, or anywhere near to the extent. I grant I may be naive, but I'm generally quite optimistic about how this is all going to work out. I don't doubt there have been some horrible cases that were handled atrociously (e.g. Karen White), and there are some baffling decisions in women's sport to allow transwomen to compete, but I just don't think we're walking down this path where sex-based rights are on the way to being eliminated.

HaroldMeeker · 21/01/2022 13:09

Like the previous poster, I would love to know the reasons for your optimism. Why don't you believe female rights are under threat?

Thinkbiglittleone · 21/01/2022 13:11

Yes I will be voting labour or any vote that gets the Tories out.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 21/01/2022 13:13

You might not see them Dotty but they are happening.
