To think this couple's attitude has no place in modern society?

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10419543/Christian-couple-ban-gay-man-partner-buying-dream-650-000-sexuality.html

A church-going wife who banned a gay man and his ITV producer partner from buying her £650,000 Surrey home has hit back in the row and insisted they are just sticking to their beliefs.

Luke Whitehouse and Lachlan Mantell were stunned when they were told that they could not buy the three-bedroom home because the Christian owners didn't want to sell to 'two men in a partnership.'

Honestly, they should be ashamed of that text. I hope no estate agent will work with them ever again.

You'd end up with a society where everyone stands in a circle shouting "fucking bigoted cunts" at each other
That wasn't being literal - you're entitled to THINK people are bigoted cts, but that doesn't mean you automatically say it to their face in RL!
Thinking they're a bigoted c
t versus calling out their discriminatory actions towards others.
See the difference?!

So, what should we do 1 week? Because finding a way to live with people who hold views we disagree with can't mean staying silent and respecting their right to hold that view. Not when it leads to people being harmed. It's all very well saying the line is the action, but without holding the belief and perpetuating it, there would be no action. Is it not better to tackle it at source?

1Week · 24/01/2022 16:50

What should we do?
Like I said, draw the line at actions, not thoughts or words.
The post I was responding to was saying we should call out fucking bigoted cunts on the grounds that their bad thoughts lead to bad speech which may lead to bad actions.
My point is no, because everyone thinks they are the ones in the right, so it will end up a shooting circle of everyone against everyone. Dialogue becomes impossible, no one gets convinced only entrenched. Everywhere becomes Twitter.

So free speech and robust well evidenced laws against discrinatory practices. Because both you and I are on someones shit list for our awful opinions but words aren't actually harmful. So other people simply have to put up with our stupid talk or walk away when we open our mouths.

Actions like in this case, are different

EeeICouldRipATissue · 24/01/2022 17:13

for our awful opinions but words aren't actually harmful
I don't agree there.
Words can indeed be harmful - there's a line between '' just words! '' and inciting others to cause harm who may be reading those words.

thedancingbear · 24/01/2022 17:28

Because both you and I are on someones shit list for our awful opinions but words aren't actually harmful.

Seriously? You can use words to harass, alarm, upset, or distress people. You can make them feel worthless, unwanted, at the fringes of society, even suicidal. You can use them to make people feel threatened or unsafe. You can use them to drum people out of their jobs or their homes.

Words aren't harmful? What planet are you from?

1Week · 24/01/2022 17:29

I see your point, I know what you're getting at ... but in your example I still lean towards placing more responsibility on the hearer not to go out and commit harmful actions .. though I guess that's debatable where the line is

OMG12 · 24/01/2022 17:36

God help anyone who rocks up wearing mixed fibres.

Of course, they can decide who they want to enter into a commercial transaction, but maybe they should be considering the overarching principle of Christianity, that of love rather than hiding behind a concept designed to ensure an heir.

I think the difference I'm getting at would be something like this:

My bitchy SIL is hurtful etc banging on about how she doesn't believe in allergies. It's not harmful til she gives my allergic child a peanut m &m. Or of course uses her position of power to convince my child that he's not allergic. But her words themselves, directed at adults don't cause material harm.

You can't stop people being stupid and wrong and hurtful.

But you can stop them causing material harm.

Or, they can show me the bit in the Bible that says 'thou shalt not conduct property transactions with sodomists'.

The fact that they may have caught anti-gay from going to church doesn't actually stop them selling their house to people outside the parameters of their faith does it? Being gay may or may not be unbiblical, but there's nothing in the good book that speaks to sale tangible assets (of any kind), is there?

When they refuse to sell to a gay couple, whilst writing a letter expatiating, in essence, on what perverts they are, that has nothing to do with the church, Jesus, or the Bible. It's everything to do with being a pair of nasty pricks.

illbeinthegarden · 24/01/2022 18:17

If I was beyond rich I'd buy it then gift it to the couple 😀 it's disgusting! They have made themselves look like massive twats

woodhill · 24/01/2022 18:43

Yes, it wasn't a very sensible move on their part. They could have welcomed the couple to view their home and not being judgemental.

The story was on the bbc news tonight

woodhill · 24/01/2022 18:43

Been

Oblomov22 · 24/01/2022 18:49

Was watching the news and saw barrister talk about the law. But I'm wondering about the Irish wedding cake case!

coconuthead · 24/01/2022 21:34

Absolutely horrible and the comments section is shocking too.

CoilWatershed · 25/01/2022 09:56

Nothing to take your faith in humanity down a notch like the Daily Mail comment section.

bustersword · 25/01/2022 20:56

Would they refuse a viewing to an unmarried heterosexual couple I wonder? And send them insulting bible verses? I suspect not.

carmabazillion · 26/01/2022 17:51

@WindInTheWillows7

Just look at some of the ways Christians are described on this thread. I even saw one comment despairing that this couple might breed, and pass their beliefs onto their children. Sure, people are free to be Christians in the UK without harassment or discrimination, as long as they don't actually live out their faith in society or express their beliefs in the workplace or in public. christianconcern.com/cccases/the-bristol-four/ christianconcern.com/cccases/seyi-omooba/ christianconcern.com/cccases/andrew-sathiyavan/ christianconcern.com/cccases/hatun-tash/ christianconcern.com/cccases/hazel-lewis/

As long as you're one of those nice Christians that doesn't actually take the Bible seriously, or talk about your faith, you're perfectly safe.

christian concert are vile. just vile

i mean look at their twitter

"Ex-gay Christians will continue to 'defy must-stay-gay cancel culture'"

"Last week, we highlighted how the Church of England has recently appointed Stephen Knott, who is in a same-sex 'marriage', to the role of Archbishops’ Secretary for Appointments."

"A @churchofengland
webpage on marriage features a photo that appears to be of two men holding hands.

This is hopefully just an accident, but it's not easy to know for sure if the CofE will remain committed to a Biblical understanding of sexuality. "

theyre also defending this guy:

"The North Bristol NHS Trust ordered Mr Walker to undertake equality and diversity training and gave him a final written warning after a colleague said he had made comments about same sex relationships, mixed race relationships and Muslims."

lol theys sacked a guy for being racist and homophobic towards his colleagues how dare they

christian concern and anyone who supports them like you @WindInTheWillows7 definitely have no place in modern or any society

Addaxsoft · 12/02/2022 22:43

does she also send bitchy bible text to her brother in law whose a pedo, or her father who hired and defended him?
