To wish my neighbours would take down their Christmas decs!

Lovely display of houses

And yet 3 out of the 10 houses nearby have their Christmas decs up still!

So all 3 have their lights up still, proper Christmas ones, and then one of them, I can still see the bloody tree through the window!

AIBU to say take the bloody things down ffs?!

We left by accident our outside lights up. Next door said he had wished he's done the same

Our over the top external lights were the last to come down on our estate as my husband was working until last weekend and had no time to do it. As he was taking them down a dog walker lamented "oh no, now yours are down that's it all definitely over for another year"

starfishmummy · 20/01/2022 13:36

Perhaps they are Armenian. Who celebrate Christmas on Jan 19th.

viques · 20/01/2022 13:36

@MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake

I want you to knock on each of those three houses and insist they take their decorations down.

Then come back here and tell me what their responses were.

And peer through the letterbox in case they are lying helpless on the floor having tripped over the cat........

All these people saying it's their house and it's acceptable.
It's not acceptable. Its tacky and lazy and would annoy me.
I'm with you OP.

I personally find outdoor Christmas lights tacky even in the midst of the actual Christmas season. However, I mustn't have enough time on my hands, as I really couldn't care less what other people choose to do to decorate their own houses - I've got far too much important stuff going on in my own life.

MindyStClaire · 20/01/2022 13:38

Last year in Ireland they were under a strict lockdown in Jan and so people left their lights up to keep a bit of cheeriness about the place. My dad died in Jan and it was lovely having all the lights twinkling while I had doorstep visits with friends who came to offer their condolences.

January is miserable enough, I'm all for it. (Although ours are long down as I was fed up with them getting in the way Grin )

DedalusBloom · 20/01/2022 13:38

Just to be the Debbie Downer on the thread - the year my father died ( early Feb) our tree was up until almost March as I just didn't get round to it. Forgive me for having more pressing things on my mind in those weeks.

Not sure that's going to be the case with all your neighbours OP but worth bearing in mind. People are having a shit time for all sorts of reasons and sparkly things are nice.

BeeDavis · 20/01/2022 13:39

What the fuck’s it got to do with you??

UniversalAunt · 20/01/2022 13:40

‘I hear you. Things like this wouldn't usually bother me but next door has blue flashing icicles on the gutter, I keep thinking it's a cop car or ambulance. Across the road has their windows covered in very fast flashing bright white lights. Another house has all their outdoor lights on and 2 inflatables, a santa and snowman. It actually is annoying me. It's nearly February take the poxy decorations down..’

Leaky bill will be in soon enough…

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 20/01/2022 13:42

I can imagine someone thinking 'oh they're a bit lazy, they haven't taken down their decorations yet', but taking it to the level where you deem it to be 'unacceptable'? Absolutely bonkers.

When something is unacceptable it means action will be taken and repercussions will be forthcoming. Can't wait to hear further details.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/01/2022 13:43

Exactly. It's hardly 'lazy', 'weird', 'tacky' or 'untidy' to follow the Christian traditions of a Christian festival.

I always think the same with fireworks - people who predictably grumble about 'idiots' setting them off when 'it isn't bonfire night' (or the nearest weekend) - as if they've never heard of Diwali or any other festivals where they are a standard part of the celebrations.

luckylavender · 20/01/2022 13:44

Why do people get so bloody triggered. Maybe they're fed up & like their decs. It's really none of your business.

luckylavender · 20/01/2022 13:45

Tell that to the Queen. She always leaves hers up into February.

We left ours up until Candlemas last year as it was my daughter's 16th birthday - at least she had some little bit of sparkle despite lockdown!

This year, they were back in the box and away before New Years!

CounsellorTroi · 20/01/2022 13:48

We took the decs, including the tree decs, down on Jan 6 but only moved the tree out of the living room last night Blush. And we’ve still got the odd sprig of holly in vases.

CaMePlaitPas · 20/01/2022 13:48

In France we keep the decorations up till Candlemas Smile

Allsorts1 · 20/01/2022 13:48

YANBU! It ruins the christmassyness if they are still up! I personally love a fresh start in January and packing away the Christmas clutter and putting some fresh flowers in vases etc helps facilitate that.

Kaya1990 · 20/01/2022 13:51

Where are they from? In some places is very common to have xmass dec till end of Jan.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/01/2022 13:52

It has an air of “can’t be arsed” about it so I wouldn’t like it either.

ClaudineClare · 20/01/2022 13:52

There is a woman near me who does this too. She also has a thing about wearing crowns. Most odd.

VikingOnTheFridge · 20/01/2022 13:53

If I'd gone to the effort of hanging lights outside they'd be a permanent fixture. Yabu, but also do follow the advice of the person who wants you to tell them all to take them down, then report back.

LagunaBubbles · 20/01/2022 13:54

It will never cease to amaze me how bothered some people seem to get how other people decorate their own homes and gardens. Strange.

SoftSheen · 20/01/2022 13:54

There's a house on our street that's had a lit Christmas tree up since September (or possibly before)!
