To think that Angela Rayner could be PM one day.

I just think she's a breath of fresh air. She's real and authentic, she's come from a poor upbringing. She was her mums carer age 9, was a teenager mum, worked in social care and worked her way up the ladder. I just find it amazing that she's achieved all of this from how her life started. If she was running for PM and the next general election I will definitely be voting for her.

which policies show she doesn't understand 'real' wc folk? Her constituents seem to think she does. Or do you know better?

Why do you think her constituents like her? No Labour MP has had fewer votes in Ashton-under-Lyne since the Liberals folded.

The things that lead me to feel she's detached from the concerns of traditional labour voters are:

  • The abuse of Tory voters, lots of whom were Labour voters until recently.
  • The focus on internal politics as she rose under Corbyn and then turned on him.
  • The call to expel anyone who joined feminist groups she disagrees with from the party.
  • The support for self ID.
  • Much of her output feels lightweight and focused on ID politics.

I don't know her at all (I know Nandy and I can't imagine AR is as bad as her IRL) so it's all based on media impression. I think she's a good campaigner and has charisma but she's risen by game playing rather than achievement and seems to have no grasp of policy details.

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing

Would love it if she were, but sadly I don’t think the British people have lost their unthinking deference to the upper classes sufficiently to elect a working class woman.
British people be blowed. The biggest hurdle is getting Labour to elect a woman as leader.
KTheGrey · 20/01/2022 20:46

Another nope. I don't understand how she wants women out of the Labour Party. Any political party needs to be a broad church which negotiates ideas and policies. She's just a no-debate authoritarian.

XingMing · 20/01/2022 20:54

I won't be voting for her, although I admire her personal drive.

ScreamingMeMe · 21/01/2022 07:07

@QueenPeony

What is this bizarre implication that keeps being bandied about on this thread, that anyone who wouldn’t want Rayner is therefore happy with Johnson? Even preferring him over her doesn’t mean thinking he’s OK.

I’ve been left wing all my life and I’d choose him over her simply because of the gender issue. She’d push through self-id and cause a vast amount of harm. I’m not under any illusion that Johnson is in favour of women’s rights either, and I think he’s an appalling amoral chancer, but politics is more complex than “working class shouty person or upper class buffoon?” It’s about policies and issues.

I do think personality matters but not just that. And on the basis of personality, understanding and political wits, she’s little better than him.

Some Labour supporters need to do some quiet reflection and humble-pie eating, but they'd rather continue on the "Anyone who doesn't vote for us is a thick, racist turkey voting for Christmas", for some reason.
RestingStitchFace · 21/01/2022 07:34

I don't think her people skills are up to snuff. It's not enough to have the values and understand the policy. People have to be willing to follow you.

OhWhyNot · 21/01/2022 07:39

No not at all

I have been impressed by her speeches the last few weeks (her media training has paid off) but once she is interviewed and goes off script she isn’t impressive at all

OhWhyNot · 21/01/2022 07:42

Too many Labour voters or those that voice their opinions have the belief that they are morally and intellectually superior

It’s been a huge part of Labour’s downfall

It's certainly put me right off. I don't want to associate with people like that.
longwayoff · 21/01/2022 08:38

You don't want to hang out with Jacob Rees Mogg and his cabal? Can't say I blame you.

ScreamingMeMe · 21/01/2022 09:00

Well no actually but this is a thread about Angela Raynor and Labour.

"But the Tories..." is lazy arguing and assumes that people who have a problem with Labour don't also have a problem with Boris and crew.

andi62 · 21/01/2022 17:32

I like her, I'm not aware that she goes around shagging anything with a pulse, unlike some of the Tory males, in Government (and ex), a good start then...

tinkywinkyshandbag · 21/01/2022 18:38

I bloody hope not, can't stand the woman. And it's not cos she's a gobby northerner, because I'm one of those.

FrankieBoyleSezLoveOneAnother · 21/01/2022 18:40

Angela is great. I would love her to be PM.

Sadly she is purportedly in a relationship with another married Labour MP which is well known apparently in Parliament. I am aware that this should not preclude her from high office but with the press we have she would be savaged, plus it makes her stance on the Matt Hancock debacle somewhat hypocritical.
JanuaryBluehoo · 23/01/2022 08:42

Oh lord no!!.. It would be an utter disaster.
As some sort of back bencher holding firm on policies, speaking up for her causes and occasionally lobbing the odd caustic bomb at the opposite side yes.

But a leader needs to be mature, measured, calm and have a depth and wealth of knowledge to pull on in times of crisis, know how to utilise people.

She wouldn't listen to anyone who she saw as posh no matter how good they are!

No. She seems childish, immature and spiteful. It would be an utter disaster.

maddy68 · 23/01/2022 08:48

I agree. She's a refreshing change I rather like the way her mouth runs away with too.

Because that makes her perfect for a role on the World stage where diplomacy and tact may be required. Confused

We really need to choose our party leaders better in England.

Yes I love that quality in a world leader and statesperson Confused

Is that how you also behave in real life. How does it work out for you?
OhWhyNot · 23/01/2022 12:33

The same was said about Corbyn a refreshing change

Well we know how badly that turned out

Trumps mouth ran away with him too ….

Lucyccfc68 · 23/01/2022 13:11

I’m not a fan personally, due to her views regarding women and feminism, however, I would still prefer someone who understands the struggles of the vast majority of people in this country than some posh t**t who went to Eton. Boris and his ilk have no idea how the majority of people in this country live. I am just sick of the privileged few ensuring that their privileged friends are well looked after.

donquixotedelamancha · 23/01/2022 14:22

She's a refreshing change I rather like the way her mouth runs away with too.

I know quite a few people who liked Boris Johnson- this is literally the rationale they gave.

shergarsrevenge · 23/01/2022 15:27

@Peaseblossum22 that's close to being defamatory. I'd be careful throwing that around.

AtillatheHun · 23/01/2022 16:01

given she and Sam Tarry are quite openly together (but for his wife), and in fact photographed coming out her home together in today's papers, hardly defamatory. Horrible for his wife, horrible for the husband she left for him & their children, and somewhat toe curling given her demand for a full investigation into Hancock / Colangelo's relationship (let's not forget that Sam Tarry was running her campaign for deputy leader, so also very much on the clock). But not defamatory.
