To be really enjoying Boris Johnson's downfall?

I know he'll be replaced by someone equally awful and I know he's not quite gone yet, but I can't remember when I felt uplifted about politics and the ejection of this national embarrassment is warming my cockles. Anyone else feel the same?

@JaniieJones

'whether you also find David Davies pathetic, ranting and a silly man?'

Yes but he has form doesn't he, I believe he has pitted himself against former leaders too. I liked Sir Leigh's come back quoting Amery 'keep going!' Which strangely the media haven't repeated ad nauseam as they have with Davis' mutterings. I thought I'd already said this but fwiw you shouldn't demand an answer jgw1 to your questions, you aren't in charge. HTH.

The stab at Johnson would have been more effective if it had not come from the man widely regarded as the laziest minister ever seen in the UK government. He went for months without even bothering to turn up for the Brexit talks.
Notonthestairs · 20/01/2022 13:05

The Prime Minister is also Minister for the Civil Service and makes regulations regarding the civil service and has authority over it.

So he was quite at liberty to shut down any jollies in Number 10.

Florianus · 20/01/2022 13:07

@Abraxan

They were work colleagues at work, how many times do you need telling?!!

They were work colleagues SOCIALISING after work, albeit outside their work place.

My equivalent would be for me to be drinking and eating, chatting together socialising with dozens of my fellow teaching staff in the playground at my school, after school finishes.

Neither was allowed.
It's not rocket science.
At the time we were in lockdown.
You could meet colleagues for essential reasons. Having a glass of wine and some cheese isn't an essential element of a work meeting.

The No.10 garden is accepted by all as part of the No.10 workplace. Many would argue that keeping staff happy in return for the extra work they had put in is an essential part of running a good working environment.

I don't know how many times I need to say it, but these are complex matters that cannot be glibly answered by people who were not part of that work environment or present at the event in question. Be patient and wait for the results of the enquiry.

That doesn't make him any more in charge of the civil service than being transport minister makes a person in charge of running airlines or bus companies.
merrymouse · 20/01/2022 13:10

Where does the urge to defend him come from?

His behaviour as a PM is no different to his behaviour as a private citizen - the way he has treated his wives, the lies he told as a journalist. It’s very obvious that he just didn’t care.

jgw1 · 20/01/2022 13:10

Boris stabbed himself?

Is this the latest breaking news?

Wehey @Florianus - parties outside of every school and hospital tonight..bring your own booze!

Notonthestairs · 20/01/2022 13:23

"That doesn't make him any more in charge of the civil service than being transport minister makes a person in charge of running airlines or bus companies."

You understand that airlines and bus companies are external commercial ventures?

The PM is the primary authority over the Civil Service.

Blossomtoes · 20/01/2022 13:27

You have to grudgingly admire the tenacity involved in arguing black is white for days on end to absolutely no purpose. To the point of contradicting your previous posts and ending up arguing with yourself. Why are you doing this @Florianus? What are you getting out of it?

ClaudineClare · 20/01/2022 13:29

Part of Johnson's role as PM is to oversee theoperation of the Civil Service. He is also TOTO at no.10. Yet people here are arguing that the behaviour of No. 10 civil servants is nothing to do with him?

notimagain · 20/01/2022 13:31

Many would argue that keeping staff happy in return for the extra work they had put in is an essential part of running a good working environment.

I agree, that’s been true for many industries/lines of work/occupations involving teamwork for decades plus…it’s not something confined to the rarified world of Number 10.

OTOH attempting to maintain morale doesn’t normally allow exemption from company/local government/ministry/national government rules and regulations.

Crazykatie · 20/01/2022 13:32

He’s not gone yet and I’d be happy to give him a push, he’s the most unstatesmanlike PM we have ever had.

Do I see a contender in the wings, no, none of the current lot are inspiring to replace him, maybe next autumn he will go, as for “partygate” a storm in a wineglass, not a sacking offence

Florianus · 20/01/2022 13:34

Sadly, I find it amusing to point out the sheer stupidity of some of the people who post here. Those who just swallow what they read in the papers or hear from Dominic Cummings, and who seem incapable of doing some even basic research of their own.

But I have other things to get on with, so I will simply say - WAIT FOR THE RESULT OF THE INQUIRY and stop imagining that you know the answers.

ClaudineClare · 20/01/2022 13:37

@florianus

Minister for the Civil Service

The Minister for the Civil Service is responsible for regulating the Civil Service.

The Civil Service (Management Functions) Act of 1992, allows the Minister for the Civil Service to delegate power to other ministers and devolved administrations.

This role was created in 1968 and is always held by the Prime Minister

Careful, a statement like that got my post deleted! Let’s see if yours gets deleted too.

Player067 · 20/01/2022 13:39

The inquiry's stated aim is no more than a "swift and general" understanding of these supposedly complex matters!

Also: "complex" my arse.

ClaudineClare · 20/01/2022 13:41

Sorry just realised someone else has already pointed this out to Florianus, who is still refusing to accept that Johnson has a responsibility for the behaviour of No. 10 civil servants.

NiceShrubbery · 20/01/2022 13:50

Look, look Florianus: some peasants have worked out how to do "basic research". I think - but being a peasant I may have the wrong end of the farming implement - this means the useless blond guy needs to get a new job?

More about this person"

UnconditionalSurrender · 20/01/2022 13:50

There are government bots who come on these threads and push the ludicrous government line. They are pretty obvious. I keep saying this to them on other threads as well- go back to your paymasters and tell them the gaslighting is not working on the general public. Party is over.

Apparently buses and aeroplanes work in the Transport Minister's office.

@Florianus Do you mean like those on here who have not even managed to look up what the rules were on 20th May 2020, by the simple act of watching the Downing Street briefing where Oliver Dowden clearly explained the rules for meeting people not in your household outside.

Treaclepie19 · 20/01/2022 13:57

I wish I did. I've been waiting for it.
As it is I just feel embarrassed for him.

SueSaid · 20/01/2022 14:00

'He’s not gone yet and I’d be happy to give him a push, he’s the most unstatesmanlike PM we have ever had.'

Then Cummings and the media would have won, that isn't anything to get excited about.

We are coming out of the pandemic in a strong position economically yes inflation is up but it is globally, the after effects of covid.

He has got a lot right in the last 2 years, errors have been made but it could've been a million times worse if the opposition were in, we'd never have had Freedom day in July for starters. Starmer predicted a disastrous summer and as always he was wrong.

Didn't anyone think it was funny when Johnson spoke mandarin to Ed Davey Grin.

Oh, I hope they don't leave. They have provided me with hours of entertainment. Last night's bottle of work is still unopened.
