My husband and I were talking about this over dinner and I'm genuinely interested in people's answers (not looking to wind anyone up).

I voted Conservative all my life until the last election, when I voted Lib Dem because of Brexit.

I will not vote Conservative again because of Brexit and lockdowns.

However: it's easy for me to say this, as I live in an area that is such a safe Conservative seat that my vote will only ever be a protest vote, and will only ever be noticed by me. The Lib Dems were second in my ward in the last election, and were still about 30,000 votes behind the Conservatives. But if I'm really honest, I don't know what I would do if it were a marginal seat. I could not bring myself to vote Labour, ever. My children have all been through the independent school system, as did XH and I, so I couldn't vote for any party which wanted to get rid of it. I also couldn't vote for any party which was supportive of men self-identifying as women and encroaching on women's rights and spaces.

So that leaves me with no real political home, sadly.

Enough4me · 19/01/2022 22:10

What party knows women are women and is ethical...?
Anyone, please identity one Confused

@RufustheFloralmissingreindeer

Well the word had its roots in an irish word and was used as a political insult…back in 1678
Yes, there's usually something to these things and why some people are uncomfortable about them.

I don't think "I call them X because that's what they are" is a good habit, so I will generally use Conservative, even though it takes longer to type.

Ordinary people voting Conservative based on their manifestos aren't really equivalent to a military massacre in my book, so I won't be accusing people who vote that way of evil.

I just think the choice is so poor at the moment it's no choice at all. As I said, I go back and forth between spoiling and voting Conservative.

And no, it's not because I self identify as an evil toff or a lower paid worker on alternate days.
It's because none of the choices available are good or obvious.

Portillista · 19/01/2022 22:13

BTW, the garden parties etc are of no interest to me, as I was happy to have my own parties during lockdown. It's lockdown per se that did it for me (especially on top of Brexit). The whole idea of lockdown just showed everyone how far removed the policy-makers (big houses, furloughed/WFH/nice gardens/children with no additional needs) are from those who are forced to endure their policies (who are often the very reverse of all of those things). If policy had been made by flat-dwelling working mothers of primary-aged children, lockdowns would never have happened.

Alexandra2001 · 19/01/2022 22:13

@Perfectlystill

Yes because the opposition are far, far worse. Anti-semitism, cosying up to Chinese spies - what Labour get up to makes a few drunken garden parties look irrelevant.
Very funny!

Even Patel said Ms Lee had broken no UK laws, wouldn't be charged or deported.
But she did cosy up to Cameron and Mrs May, the then PM, wrote to her offering praise for her work on sino/uk relations.....

and which PM bought in billions of Chinese investment into vital UK infrastructure? the same PM who called a referendum that has caused so much division in the UK... who then ran away to his shed... beats a fridge i suppose.

VelvetChairGirl · 19/01/2022 22:15

@Alexandra2001

Tory means a bandit, an outlaw, a thief. the tories have been called tory since the 1600s the conservative royalists

Indeed, well deserved, the party made for the criminal rich, by the criminal rich.

Hardly surprising many Tory supporters say Boris breaking the law is irrelevant......

But the sad thing is most of them are not rich, but they just buy into this notion that the Tories are talking about them.

thats why I say its the Hitler school of public speaking, who doesn't consider themselves "hard working" "deserving" etc and for you to be those things means that there has to be other people that aren't.

always about the "othering" even Mavis who works part time in ASDA thinks the Tories are speaking to her, meanwhile people like Mogg put all their money in Euros and avoid paying millions in tax while shouting about British fish.

Well as i say its not a rude word here, so I’ll probably use both as i always have

And ive just looked at traditionally ‘conservative’ newspapers and they say tory and tories as well

And no, it's not because I self identify as an evil toff or a lower paid worker on alternate days

Im assuming this is in relation to someone else’s comments

lightand · 19/01/2022 22:18

I am a floating voter.
I havent voted tory in about 15 years.
I wouldnt rule out voting Tory.
I have tried voting for minor parties but that doesnt make any difference to anything unless others do it too. And for some reason, in England, people dont vote much for minor parties.
I think Boris has acted badly.
But is Labour, or Liberal[or are they a minor party too] going to be better? That is the question I have.
But all can change yet again between now and a election.

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 19/01/2022 22:18

I do draw the line at calling men women though, cuckooing existing words for oppressed by oppressors not on.

Cloe78 · 19/01/2022 22:19

Boris went to a party, sorry work meeting, on the same day that my father died without his family around him.
I wouldn't piss on Boris if he was on fire, let alone vote for him

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 19/01/2022 22:20

Well no…that could be considered rude

That's interesting it is used in the papers. It must be very regional.

No not in relation to anything else, specifically, well maybe those who just accuse anyone who is not voting labour of being rich etc. Just a terrible joke 🤣 perhaps I needed a drum roll? 🥁

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 19/01/2022 22:29

🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁 badum tish 😀

politicaca · 19/01/2022 22:29

Disappointed with Liz Truss not even going to the GRA and asserting rights for women and children. Gobsmacking. If she isn’t going to do it then WHO?!

Patel has recognised that we can’t record make crimes as women’s crimes… I wish the newspapers would stop reporting them as such. Really gets my goat.

So just WHOSE job is it to stick up for the women at rape crisis centres? The current situation in Edinburgh is distinctly dangerous. Isn’t that also Priti Patel’s area though??

Final thought - will the Tories / conservatives stop men posing as women in sports & Scouting? Not looking likely is it!

Eightiesfan · 19/01/2022 22:31

Boris is on borrowed time, but he’ll keep his position for the time being as there is no-one who could replace him and win an election. Boris is a weak leader and as such has surrounded himself with a cabinet who are so bad they make him look good. He is a coward and constantly sends his minions to press conferences when he’s feeling the heat. I have never and would never vote Tory, so yes in that respect I am biased, but how anyone can support him after all this lockdown drama is beyond me.

Blossomtoes · 19/01/2022 22:40

That makes no sense. He couldn’t win an election right now. The red wall seats voting Tory was a one off fluke, it won’t happen again. Hell, his government is losing true blue seats and that was before the recent revelations.

You are right he surrounded himself with a cabinet who are just as bad, which begs the question why you think he is on borrowed time when him and his Leave campaign mates took over the party and booted out all those opposed, or they just learned to keep their mouths shut.

who is going to get rid of him when he gave them all jobs in the first place and let them carry on being despicable and getting away with it, they all have their hands in the till, because he lets them, I mean he even let Patel back in when she never should have been allowed after breaking the ministerial code in 2017.

Blossomtoes · 19/01/2022 22:44

There are a lot of backbenchers who detest him. They owe him nothing.

We won't know unless they are voted in, but one thing's for sure - it's impossible that they could be worse. I'd rather vote for an unknown and give them a chance, rather than a known omnishambles.
Blossomtoes · 19/01/2022 22:54

One of the 300 odd MPs who isn’t in the cabinet? Jeremy Hunt, Johnny Mercer, Penny Mordaunt - there are plenty to choose from.

Jeremy Hunt? mr secret meetings with US healthcare companies and dodgey promises to sell them the NHS and selling all our stockpiling facilities and the PPE within them?.

no idea who the others are, so you want people to vote for people they dont know or dodgy people they do.

Blossomtoes · 19/01/2022 23:11

no idea who the others are, so you want people to vote for people they dont know or dodgy people they do.

Whoever is chosen, neither you or I will have any say in it. It’s the 100,000 Tory party members who get the final decision. I never thought I’d ever say this but at least Hunt’s an adult, he looks good compared with the ship of fools in the current cabinet. I don’t know why Mercer’s a Tory at all, he’s pretty decent.

lightisnotwhite · 19/01/2022 23:17

@Nightlystroll

Oh these threads. Realistically, how many Tories are going to come along and say they vote Tory just so people can start calling them, cunts, twats, heartless, disgusting, vile, etc etc.
This but not worried really.

I don’t think he’s done a bad job. I quite like his ad hoc style and a more imaginative style of government.. Brexit was all over the place with Teresa but he got it finished . I’ve got no truck with how he’s handled Covid. He understands the difference between sex and gender

None of its perfect but I don’t think he claims it is.
