My husband and I were talking about this over dinner and I'm genuinely interested in people's answers (not looking to wind anyone up).

It's an awful story and it is exactly what people predicted would happen and we were assured that it wouldn't.
But the fact remains that this happened on a Tory watch. I still don't get how voting for the Tories is meant to protect women from this shit?

And only the Tory party with their 80 seat majority can stop it!Shock But they haven't. Why not?

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 19/01/2022 12:55

@rookiemere

I never understood the point of spoiling your vote.

You're never going to find a party where you absolutely agree with all their policies, so either vote for the one you find least bad or vote tactically to prevent the one you like least getting in.

I have to say I much preferred the politics of a few years ago when both Conservatives and Labour appeared to be much more centrist.

No, I'm beginning to think more and more that I should use my vote properly. I will sticker it though so it's clear as to why. I suggest others do the same.

In my (admittedly limited) personal experience people vote either Conservative or Labour because of which party they perceive to be fairest & give best outcomes. I’ve found that those who are staunch Conservatives tend toward having a personal picture of fairness within the household being if you both work you pay for services on basis of income (person earning 40% pays 40% of bills) or that you split costs 50/50 and retain remainder of earnings. Those who are staunch Labour supporters tend toward pooling household income, paying bills and dividing any surplus evenly. Within a household none of these methods of managing income are truly fair/unfair. They are just representative of how peoples opinions differ on what fairness looks like. Same with running the country. Most people seek a party that have policies they perceive as fair. I might perceive Conservatives as awful & having policies that create misery for the poor but others might perceive Labour the same way. In reality both parties have pros and cons and if the majority of the country want a party they perceive is likely to protect personal assets that they have worked throughout their lives for I don’t see why that’s so hard to understand. For most people (a minority are higher rate tax payers) they’d likely be better off from a taxation standpoint with Labour so plenty of people voting conservative are not doing so for some personal gain

rookiemere · 19/01/2022 12:56

@WorriedMumsDontSleep what do you mean by sticker it , sounds interesting?

Toseland · 19/01/2022 12:59

Let us be clear about this. If Self-ID and ‘gender identity’ gets voted in then Women can wave goodbye to almost every right they’ve got and safeguarding of children is removed.

Self-ID would mean a new frontier to be conquered is opened up. Everything that is currently for women could (and probably will) eventually be taken over and run by men.

That means your safe spaces, your places on boards and committees, in prisons, sports, awards, breastfeeding groups, everything you can think of.

That’s how dangerous voting Labour, Lib Dem, Green or SNP is.

boobot1 · 19/01/2022 13:03

@Hapoydayz

Yes I'd vote tory. The opposition parties are a very scary prospect in comparison.
This, the tories are appalling, the alternatives are a lot worse.

The point of me spoiling my vote is this. I live in a Tory stronghold, it makes zero difference how I vote and, in any case, I couldn’t in all conscience vote for a party led by Corbyn. The LibDem candidate is a weasel. Spoilt papers are counted, they carry a message.

@hayley037

Has the Tory party ever been on the right side of History or had an ideology that is good for the vast majority of people?

*1933-39 Encouraged by traitors such as Halifax, under Chamberlain's leadership advocated appeasement of the Nazis.
*1946-48 Voted against the creation of the NHS & social security 22 times.
*1952 Created concentration camps and sanctioned the torture, rape and murder of Kenyans in failed attempt to stop Kenyatta who was jailed.
*1956 Created the Suez crisis by conspiring with France & Israel to take back land & the canal by force. Lied about intentions to the US.
*1960 Ernest Marples the Minister for Transport commissions Beeching to destroy much of Britain's railways. Unsurprisingly, Marples had significant financial interests in Road building.
1964 Conservative MP Peter Griffiths campaigns on the slogan “If you want a ni*er for a neighbour, vote Labour.”
*1968 Enoch Powell delivers Rivers of Blood speech
*1972-74 Caused industrial action by miners/rail workers; power cuts and the 3 day week.
*1976 Margaret Thatcher wanted to Whip Conservatives to oppose the Race Relations Act 1976.

*1980s Tories Classified Mandela and ANC as terrorists & refused to sanction apartheid South Africa. Young Tories wore badges saying 'Hang Mandela'.
1980-1994 Privatisation of BT, Energy, Water and Rail which has left us with worst internet connectivity in Europe, Unaffordable energy, Rivers of sht and the worst rail service in Europe. But made Tory execs very rich.
*1988 Enacted Section 28 of the Local Government Act.
*1998 voted against the National Minimum Wage Act.
*2003-04 Voted against LGBTQ equal rights.
*2015 Passed the Referendum act leading to the Brexit referendum and the rise of overt far-right hate and racism by Farage and cronies and the proliferation of fascist groups such as Britain First.
*2020 Negotiated failing EU withdrawal agreement and subsequent Act. Supported by DUP, the Act threatens peace in NI by destroying the GFA which a majority of NI people voted for.

Attached are some of the achievements of the most recent Labour administration. Mostly all progressive, and almost all voted against by the Tories.

As someone who signed on under Blair I just want to point out that cutting youth unemployment is a lie.

we signed on for 6 months, after which we were transferred on to the New Deal scheme under which we transferred off of JSA to IS while doing mickey mouse courses for outfits that won government contracts or do work experience as dogs body slaves for companies like Poundland (the outfits were paid £300 per week per client, the client got the same rate as JSA but with an extra £10 a week to cover lunch and bus fare) after our upto 6 months on New Deal was up, the IS was stopped and we had to reapply for JSA.

so it was impossible for any young people to be classed as long term unemployed and 50% of the claimants were constantly hidden by the fact being on New Deal does not count towards the unemployment figures as its a different benefit.

Thanks @Toseland. We cannot say this enough. This is a BURNING PLATFORM and it is scary.

Morgan12 · 19/01/2022 13:17

How are they?
Please tell us what they would do?

sashagabadon · 19/01/2022 13:36

the election is maybe 18 months - 2 years away but yes I absolutely could vote Tory. I am generally a floating voter and have voted all 3 main parties in my time. Mainly Labour it has to be said.
I am not tribal though and I usually vote on one or two issues that I care about rather than everything possible.
I used to vote solely on childcare policies for example when that was a big factor in my life as my children needed childcare.

StayAGhost · 19/01/2022 13:38

Indeed @Blessex

Gender ideally consigns the existence of women to
the feelings inside a man's head

StayAGhost · 19/01/2022 13:41

Ideology!

luckylavender · 19/01/2022 13:43

@Solasum

I find it deeply saddening that the Conservatives in the current state they are are still the only viable option. How hard can it be to mount an opposition to this level of incompetence? And yet, I have no idea at all what Labour is about, and having initially been impressed by Keir Starmer now think he is a non entity. I think the only hope is if some of the many very good MPs who are currently lurking on the back benches throw their hats into the ring.
🥱
luckylavender · 19/01/2022 13:44

@Ionlydomassiveones

Because the other parties appear to hate women and want to silence women. They say things publicly and proudly like women are ‘dinosaurs that hoard rights’ or that only women have a cervix ‘is a phrase that should be never said’ - amongst others…

I absolutely hate Boris but the very real and present threat to women’s rights, safety, dignity and free speech by the opposition parties is extremely scary.

You really think the Boris Johnson government cares for women? 🤣
PenStation · 19/01/2022 13:46

Absolutely. So they may not care about women, as others say, but at least they know what a woman is and to keep womens spaces safe and for women only.
Blessex · 19/01/2022 15:36

I said it and will say it again. Maybe the Tories don’t give a shiny shit about women. But as long as the other parties have a policy that actively hurts women then sorry my vote will go to Tories. Who don’t have that policy. Good day.

Veritat · 19/01/2022 15:42

I wouldn't vote Conservative again with the current leader, and I'm not enthusiastic about any of the likely replacements.

I can't understand how anyone can suggest that their policies ^don't" actively hurt women. We all know that one of the reasons they were so keen on Brexit was that they wanted to be free of EU laws protecting women's rights. If they get in again, we can all watch those maternity rights disappearing all too quickly, and I wouldn't be at all optimistic about retaining autonomy over women's bodies in the shape of abortion rights.

Veritat · 19/01/2022 15:43

Absolutely. So they may not care about women, as others say, but at least they know what a woman is and to keep womens spaces safe and for women only.

Given what they've done to policing and the justice system, they have put women's safe spaces in severe danger.

TameDucksAtChatsworth · 19/01/2022 15:44

@PenStation

The tories don’t give a shiny shit about women
Maybe but it's a start they at least know what a woman actually is!
Veritat · 19/01/2022 15:47

Maybe but it's a start they at least know what a woman actually is!

And, for them, a women's place is in the home.

TameDucksAtChatsworth · 19/01/2022 15:49

Please don't vote for any candidate who ties themselves in knots trying to define what a woman is.

If that means spoiling your ballot paper, then so be it.
