To think this takes the "woke" biscuit

I'm on a discussion FB page. I never post on it but I read it occasionally. Mainly just to gawp at the craziness.

It is FULL of woke types, can't say man or woman it's person with a vagina, chest feeder, all that sort of crap.

Anyway, I've noticed a new thing now where no one is allowed to say dead anymore. It's "unalived". Literally everyone says it. Apparently the word dead or killed is triggering and we should all say "unalived" now.

Today they were discussing dates and whether you tell friends where you're going before you meet the person. All very sensible of course. But the comments are all "yes because I'd hate to be found unalived the next day". These are adult humans talking like this...

I just... what?! Was the world always this insane?
@saltinesandcoffeecups

Not that I’m about to shed any tears over the plight of social media companies, but when they don’t police hate speech and bullying online, they get widely criticized and governments demand regulatory actions.

Bearing in mind that Facebook has more than 2.5 billion users, they’re not going to manually review every post or message by every user, which is why they have to rely on algorithms.

Of course, the algorithms end up flagging entirely innocent language-use on occasion. I get that that can be annoying but it’s little to do with wokeness.

Incidentally, based on your description of your group I’m pretty sure you’re taking about the ‘Expeditionary Force’ Facebook group. If so, there is no such racism warning.
Facebook declared around $9billion profits in 2021. They have the money to do better.

Twenty five years ago it was reasonable for large scale tech companies to claim "carrier" status. That stopped when they started selecting content for monetisation.

They tiny amount FB actually spend on moderating is overwhelmingly on English language content and through a West Coast US white male lens. This leaves content in other languages almost completely unmoderated.

The people paid to filter through the English language sewage are often in less developed countries on minimum wage having to work through delights such as violent porn and child porn.

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 19/01/2022 09:29

It's to avoid censorship of the word suicide I believe.

StationaryMagpie · 19/01/2022 09:40

language shifts and evolves, and yes, social media and the terms that come into being on those platforms are going to be spread around because they're not exclusive little universes that keep themselves to themselves.

It's not 'woke' just because you're a dinosaur who shrieks and gives a tinkly laugh while presuming the people using them must be less than intelligent, while clutching your pearls because you dislike new words/terms/phrases.

Ormally · 19/01/2022 09:50

Only a small step to doubleplusungood and Goodthink then...

SlidingInto2022sDMs · 19/01/2022 09:58

I don't think this thread is going the way OP really wants it to go. Not as many PC gawn maard, we hate the woke posts.

OP try the anti-woke klaxon next time with something that most people can't explain away, k.

ANameChangeAgain · 19/01/2022 10:02

I would be tempted to post using every "swear word" i knew, such as dead, girl, boy, woman, man, mother, breastfeed and get myself kicked off in glory.

cushioncovers · 19/01/2022 10:06

It's a social media thing op. In healthcare we still have to use the word dead or died. Imagine telling relatives that their loved one is unalived

Helleofabore · 19/01/2022 10:32

@RepentMotherfucker

These are adult humans talking like this...

Nope. They may identify as adults but that ain't adulting.

Cannot be said enough!

Still batshit.

BoredZelda · 19/01/2022 17:55

Not every strange thing you see/hear/read is woke.

But how else will people identify themselves as being "straight talkers" if they can't use the word woke at every opportunity.

How ironic that the OP is misusing an on-trend made up word to complain about people using on trend made up words.

Newnamefor2022 · 19/01/2022 17:57

Things go in cycles. In Ancient Rome you had to say 'they have lived' rather than they are dead (supporters of Catilinarian conspiracy) as apparently the latter was bad luck.

MsTSwift · 19/01/2022 17:59

I work in this area and admit to sometimes using “failed to survive” but unalive isn’t even a word!

TrickyD · 19/01/2022 18:20

Calling dying or dead passing or passed is bad enough, never mind unalived.

Actually, 'unalive' is a word, but it doesn't really mean the same as 'dead'.
DaisyWaldron · 19/01/2022 18:35

I thought this was ridiculous until I read the explanation, and now it makes perfect sense. Just think of the DH type abbreviations on here which seem sickeningly twee taken out of the context of MN conventions.

Pedalpushers · 19/01/2022 18:40

The outraged bunch on this thread are very 'old (wo)man tells at cloud'. Thankfully many sensible people have explained it already.

BringYourOwnBoris · 19/01/2022 18:40

I was taught to say "dead" or "died" when talking to relatives. Then there is no ambiguity at all.
It's hard to hear though.

ZenNudist · 19/01/2022 18:43

Is a woke biscuit a ginger nut with "be the change you want to see in the world" iced on it?

MichelleScarn · 19/01/2022 18:45

@CaptainThe95thRifles

Ahem.... Constable Shoe....Grin
TabithaTittlemouse · 19/01/2022 18:47

@AsYouWishButtercup

Also the workest biscuit is obviously Rich Tea - plain, inoffensive, doesn’t cause controversy, and crumbles easily when faced with a bit of adversity (in the form of a cup of tea).

They need to work on the name though in case it triggers poor people, and people who call tea ‘dinner’. “Moderately Salaried Evening Meal” could be a new name?

The most factual post on mumsnet
WitchWithoutChips · 19/01/2022 18:47

The irony is that the same people using ‘unalived’ also respond to anything really funny with the 💀emoji, meaning ‘dead’.

The crying laughing emoji is very cheugy Wink.

It is although it doesn’t mean what these people are wanting it to mean.
