To think this takes the "woke" biscuit

I'm on a discussion FB page. I never post on it but I read it occasionally. Mainly just to gawp at the craziness.

It is FULL of woke types, can't say man or woman it's person with a vagina, chest feeder, all that sort of crap.

Anyway, I've noticed a new thing now where no one is allowed to say dead anymore. It's "unalived". Literally everyone says it. Apparently the word dead or killed is triggering and we should all say "unalived" now.

Today they were discussing dates and whether you tell friends where you're going before you meet the person. All very sensible of course. But the comments are all "yes because I'd hate to be found unalived the next day". These are adult humans talking like this...

I just... what?! Was the world always this insane?

Nope. They may identify as adults but that ain't adulting.

Obviously it was originally to get around other platforms censors but Facebook is odd sometimes

We no longer say bitch in my dog group as people were finding themselves auto banned, muted etc by Facebook. Other groups have been entirely deleted for repeated rule breaks that have been nonsense like that

I'm a mod of a group and the group gets a warning about certain content including discussion of suicide and self harm. The warning does threaten that they will shut the group

I know on YouTube it can have a big effect on wether a creator can earn money, some videos have been taken down for less (although sometimes put back up after appeal but that mucks up the algorithms so impacts ad revenue)

Broblem · 19/01/2022 00:36

@334bu

At least 10 people must have pointed out by now that this is nothing to do with ‘wokeness’ and is solely to do with avoiding inadvertent censure by algorithms on certain social media platforms. How is this still escaping you?

honeyytoast · 19/01/2022 00:37

Was ready to say yabu but... yanbu

On what basis?

Arnia · 19/01/2022 00:44

YANBU, op.
It's idiotic. Even if it was being used on TikTok (rather than on a platform where there's no need for it), presumably it's only a matter of time before TikTok bans this ugly euphemism too.

Enough4me · 19/01/2022 00:48

They're unadults, try other groups.

IDontKnow00 · 19/01/2022 00:50

As others have said, the likes of tiktok, YouTube (and I guess possibly Facebook) etc have algorithms that automatically censor or take down content that they deem inappropriate and people have figured out certain words that trigger this and have started replacing them with something else. "Unalive" is one of those words. Another one for example is SA meaning sexual assault. It's social media censorship that influences this not "wokeness". So you can stop being judgy now...

JustAnotherPoster00 · 19/01/2022 00:51

@DiddyHeck

What's the name of the group OP so we can all gawp?
There won't be a link this is nothing more than the OP wanting some 'woke' culture war froth
sweetbutapshyco · 19/01/2022 00:59

political correctness gone haywire, that is what it is.

It’s use outside of platforms that penalize use of the word ‘suicide’ is usually tongue in cheek though. I think everyone (other than anti-woke frothers) realize that it’s just a stupid euphemism birthed because of shitty algorithms. If you search the term on Twitter, you won’t see many/any serious posts.

A Facebook group I’m in is on the “racist” list.

Apparently our admins can’t convince the woke regime that we really are a sci-fi author/series group that the main character (not human) refers to all humans as “hairless monkeys’ or ‘filthy monkeys’ is not actually racist in the known sense.

Alas they haven’t been successful, so anyone joining the group is greeted with a message that says something like “are you sure you want to join? This group is racist”

Sigh…. If it helps we haven’t stopped with all of the monkey and banana jokes.

And yes it’s a a great sci-fi series and the protagonist who uses the monkey term is a shiny beer can who is an advanced species.

And yes I feel ridiculous having to explain that a fictional talking beer can is really not racist.

Broblem · 19/01/2022 01:32

@saltinesandcoffeecups

Not that I’m about to shed any tears over the plight of social media companies, but when they don’t police hate speech and bullying online, they get widely criticized and governments demand regulatory actions.

Bearing in mind that Facebook has more than 2.5 billion users, they’re not going to manually review every post or message by every user, which is why they have to rely on algorithms.

Of course, the algorithms end up flagging entirely innocent language-use on occasion. I get that that can be annoying but it’s little to do with wokeness.

Incidentally, based on your description of your group I’m pretty sure you’re taking about the ‘Expeditionary Force’ Facebook group. If so, there is no such racism warning.

AsYouWishButtercup · 19/01/2022 01:38

I think there’s a really strange stigma (at least in UK and US) around death, almost like it’s unnatural or offensive to die. My dad died when I was a young adult and the people who were utterly terrified of saying the word ‘dead’ or even speaking to me about it (I WANTED to talk about hun) baffled me. It’s insulting and indignifying and we need to normalise talking about death.

Think you missed a word there 😉:

"Nope. They may self identify as adults but that ain't adulting."

AsYouWishButtercup · 19/01/2022 01:48

Also the workest biscuit is obviously Rich Tea - plain, inoffensive, doesn’t cause controversy, and crumbles easily when faced with a bit of adversity (in the form of a cup of tea).

They need to work on the name though in case it triggers poor people, and people who call tea ‘dinner’. “Moderately Salaried Evening Meal” could be a new name?

Yeah, when left wingers say ‘Eat The Rich’ I’m pretty sure this is what they’re referencing.

Justilou1 · 19/01/2022 02:18

Oh my god… I thought I had it bad simply getting used to calling all my daughters friends “they” just in case I offend them.
Btw, I have offended someone by calling them they as well, but she took it well when I apologized and explained why. “At least you’re trying…” (Patronising, much?”
Can’t win.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 19/01/2022 02:56

@AsYouWishButtercup - your post really resonated with me and I hope you don't mind my contribution.

I'm dealing with a potential end of life scenario tomorrow- my DP is in ICU....it's been a long out of the blue fortnight and is blatantly horrific.

Tonight I am now drunk and two dear friends have just left after hours of alternate wailing and gallows humour, reminiscence, interspersed with many other things.

Naming our fears, considering outcomes, and acknowledging honestly the brutality of the situation is our armour.

Without it, I would not be functioning at all.

Two things in life are certain - death and taxes. At some point everyone will experience the former. The second - well, depends on your accountant....

Suppression of perfectly natural emotion is terribly unhealthy. Lack of ritual is too.

"Unalived" indeed....saying "it's an algorithmic thing" is disingenuous at best because it changes our language, obscures meaning, and eventually becomes part of the lexicon..... people are influenced massively by what they absorb online.

I'm 53. Who in my age bracket ever heard of "woke" until the internet. We understood injustice in all its forms, named it, campaigned against it, etc.

I look at the world we live in and it's getting more surreal on a daily basis.

Where are we going as a species eh?

I'd love to know. Or maybe I wouldn't.....

Broblem · 19/01/2022 03:04

But it is an algorithmic thing.

The word ‘suicide’ is banned on TikTok, and can lose people to lose ad money on YouTube, so it’s a (knowingly) stupid euphemism used to avoid censorship. The algorithms themselves may be flawed (they’re a bit of a blunt tool) and you can’t blame people for trying to find a way around them. Equally, it’s not hard to see why a social media platform (particularly one primarily used by children and teens) would want to screen out a lot of suicide-related content.

Sorry about your DP.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 19/01/2022 03:10

Aye, I get you but there's the rub.....

The web and technology are both wonderful and awful.

A terrible Paradox indeed.....

It is so very complicated.

Did I mention I'm drunk?

Thank you for your kind words though.

I may not sleep tonight.....

And I have on tap a beautiful anonymous platform for my philosophical musings......

Quelle irony.....

So it sounds like the admins finally got through to the powers or it’s a different group, yes Ex force. When my husband joined (after me) he got the warning and the admins posted about their plight.

No I don’t give SM sites a pass because someone complained. My philosophy is better the bad stuff out there in the open so we all know what we’re dealing with than hidden under the rug to fester. But I never expected the world to be a pleasant place and have no illusions that banning words changes people.

But to each there own, only time will tell if this tactic works. It hasn’t in the past, hence we’re still dealing with these issues, but maybe now it will.

reesewithoutaspoon · 19/01/2022 03:43

The world has moved on from Scunthorpe being the universally banned word then.
