To think this takes the "woke" biscuit

I'm on a discussion FB page. I never post on it but I read it occasionally. Mainly just to gawp at the craziness.

It is FULL of woke types, can't say man or woman it's person with a vagina, chest feeder, all that sort of crap.

Anyway, I've noticed a new thing now where no one is allowed to say dead anymore. It's "unalived". Literally everyone says it. Apparently the word dead or killed is triggering and we should all say "unalived" now.

Today they were discussing dates and whether you tell friends where you're going before you meet the person. All very sensible of course. But the comments are all "yes because I'd hate to be found unalived the next day". These are adult humans talking like this...

I just... what?! Was the world always this insane?

@Sort0f

And the biscuit is for you OP, for “gawping at the craziness”. Other people can choose their own vernacular. It’s ok.
That’s an interesting take on communication
Broblem · 19/01/2022 03:52

No I don’t give SM sites a pass because someone complained. My philosophy is better the bad stuff out there in the open so we all know what we’re dealing with than hidden under the rug to fester. But I never expected the world to be a pleasant place and have no illusions that banning words changes people.
So just do away with any censorship on social media? It’ll quickly end up with the sorts of content that is usually confined to the dark web.

GoldSilverGlimmer · 19/01/2022 03:56

Unalived is garbage, but so is rainbow in conjunction with anything that isn’t coloured light refraction in the sky…really gets on my nerves

What with dogs going over a rainbow bridge, and rainbow babies, I was very confused.

Gah…

Northsoutheastwest76 · 19/01/2022 04:23

Can't get worked up about it tbh .

Dreamitaway · 19/01/2022 05:14

It's because Facebook algorithm shuts groups down that say certain words. Saying unalived is to stop the groups being shut down, nothing to do with being 'woke'.

Flutterflybutterby · 19/01/2022 05:43

This made me laugh. Unalived 😂😂😂

EerieSilence · 19/01/2022 05:54

I was once in a discussion with people who argued that "people with period" and "people who give birth" is absolutely ok but took a very grave insult to "chicks with dicks" or "women with penises" for trans women. Go figure

I'm in a group that uses the words dead, dying and died quite a bit. It's never been shut down, and no-one has been banned or muted or whatever.

YANBU OP. It is a bit batshit. And I should know (see my user name).

pawpatrolneedaunion · 19/01/2022 05:57

Maybe despite the gender woo, they've read the Christmas pig which is all about 'alivening'

stayathomer · 19/01/2022 06:01

Why are you in the group if you find so much of it ridiculous? Leave them to it. It's better for you too, find somewhere positive for yourself (meant in the nicest possible way!)

danascully96 · 19/01/2022 06:07

It does make it hard to write anything if we have to be fully inclusive all the time — words like women, breasts, etc. suddenly vanish from our tongues because they don’t encompass everyone. But to be fair, doesn’t the fight for greater equality for trans folks matter more than these grammatical quandaries? Will these kinks inevitably work themselves out? How much of this behavior reflects the movement as a whole? Are we trying to find moments of ridiculousness to falsely malign a group? Is the gradual disappearance of words like “woman” and “breasts” ultimately an act of misogynistic violence rather than progress? I’m just trying to understand, I’m genuinely not sure.

I agree that “dead” is banned on TikTok, so the workaround “unalive” makes sense, but in general, I’ve read that’s it better to directly mention “death” and “suicide” so that the person depressed understands the total depth of their desires. Sugarcoating the word doesn’t help, at least from my limited understanding.

LeedleLee · 19/01/2022 06:14

I don't think it's used to be woke. It's used because FB/Twitter ect flags up certain words which can eventually lead to your account being suspended, and dead/dying/death is one of them.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 19/01/2022 06:42

God this anti-woke culture war stuff is so boring. I’m sick of seeing the word ‘woke’ now. It’s used for everything in every scenario by people so desperate to use it like it’s their new favourite they’ve just discovered. However, they haven’t realised it’s already been used to death.

It’s a meaningless term completely detached from its original use. When will the culture warriors move on from it?

Who even has time to read a Facebook group they don’t like which annoys them so much, they come to snark about it on another site to people who’ve never seen the group (so does the group even exist?). Or is this just an attempt to shoehorn the word ‘woke’ as a klaxon to the anti-woke culture warriors to start kicking off about trans?

334bu · 19/01/2022 06:51

But to be fair, doesn’t the fight for greater equality for trans folks matter more than these grammatical quandaries?

Except that it is not a fight for greater equality for trans folk, as the erasure of " woman" to refer to anything to do with female biology and its reproductive role is not mirrored by a similar removal of the word *man" in reference to male biology. The use of " menstruator" etc is forced on women because some males don't want to be excluded. Patriarchy at it's finest.

@whatmagicword

What a load of TRIPE!
That’ll offend vegans.
cookiemonster2468 · 19/01/2022 07:35

Why are you on a Facebook group where your only reason for being on there is to judge people? That is really unpleasant.

Just leave the group if it makes you this angry. People can speak how they like and they aren't hurting anyone.

Also, this.

No.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/01/2022 08:04

Other matters aside, can anyone explain why it’s ‘unalived’ with a d, rather than unalive, which would at least make some sort of sense.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/01/2022 08:48

'Woke' is certainly overused, and misused in this context. This particular issue is idiocy, not 'wokeness'. Suppressing specific inoffensive words but allowing euphemisms (until they too are suppressed) is foolish. The intention is no doubt good - to try to stop their platform being misused by groups discussing suicide. But it's not done that, it's just replaced one word by another.
And those saying it's harmless - I'm not so sure. I think some people who've suffered a bereavement could find 'unalived' very upsetting.

Platforms need to use more sophisticated automated systems to detect problematic discussions, and/or (ideally) better human moderation.

AsYouWishButtercup · 19/01/2022 09:10

@Justilou1

Oh my god… I thought I had it bad simply getting used to calling all my daughters friends “they” just in case I offend them. Btw, I have offended someone by calling them they as well, but she took it well when I apologized and explained why. “At least you’re trying…” (Patronising, much?” Can’t win.
Out of curiosity what were you expected to call them?!

I wouldn’t have apologised - I actually think it’s rude for someone to think they’re so very special that random folk should be psychic about their pronouns, or remember, on top of everything else that life throws, that Special needs Special Words lest they have a meltdown

OperationRinka · 19/01/2022 09:11

YABU for not realising that this is not in fact the result of a "woke" desire to avoid hurting the feelings of the metabolically challenged.

If I stumbled on a PP's dog group and saw them talking about their "girl dogs" I'd probably assume that they were nearly-mouthed idiots, but I'd be wrong. And then is a couple of years that poster and others in the situation will start talking about girl dogs on the Doghouse here because that's what she's got into the habit of typing, and other new posters will think "oh is that what we say here?" and copy them. And so it goes.

OperationRinka · 19/01/2022 09:12

"Nearly-mouthed"="meally-mouthed"

AsYouWishButtercup · 19/01/2022 09:15

@MistressoftheDarkSide I’m so so sorry to hear this - hope you are ok today. I coped well by facing the grief unashamedly, it really helped to be blunt about ‘my dad died and yes I do want to talk about him’, wallowing in the stigma I personally think is so damaging especially when grieving. It amazed me how much people were scared to talk about death.
Good luck to you today Flowers
