To not understand the obsession

With DM boots?

I think they are so ugly & chunky. Every time I see them on I think to myself, why would anyone buy them?! They are really masculine looking.

@QueBarbaridad

If you can wear something so masculine and still look feminine then you must be beautiful?
Who says they're masculine? They're boots ffs
rambleonplease · 17/01/2022 16:10

Love mine!! I hate heels, think they look a bit silly but each to their own!

MedusasBadHairDay · 17/01/2022 16:11

@Arnia

YANBU they're vile. I always associate them with the oddball goths at school and can't break that association no matter how "trendy" they've become.

Ugly and uncomfortable looking.

Proud to be an oddball goth tbh
Freecuthbert · 17/01/2022 16:18

Can't afford DMs but I love the look and have similar style shoes. I would rather wear a reliable pair of sturdy boots than fucking heels. If you want to make yourself weak, slow and vulnerable while wearing heels, go for it. Heels are only made to make women weak and pretty to look at imo. There's a reason they're fast going out of fashion.

EM1912 · 17/01/2022 16:37

I agree OP. I don't understand why they are so popular, especially when they are so expensive and not nice looking (in my opinion). I just think they are too chunky. They can look good on the right person, but my 60 year old mum just bought some and I don't think she suits them at all! Darent tell her though after she spent a lot of money!

MooseBreath · 17/01/2022 16:42

I love them and have had them for donkeys years. They're comfortable, supportive, waterproof, and have good treads for ice. They last for ages. Plus they go with my jeans/leather jacket aesthetic (wanky as that sounds).

Comedycook · 17/01/2022 16:55

That's your preference...it doesn't make you superior to all the women who have different preferences. There's a time and a place surely. Most women who wear heels won't be wearing them all day, every day. I prefer the aesthetic of heels but I don't wear them much anymore. They're not practical but I don't always want practical.

Freecuthbert · 17/01/2022 17:03

@Comedycook

Yes, it's my preference. And I won't stop women wearing their heels, their preference. But I still think heels are very silly and it's not a coincidence a lot of things designed for and targeted at women uphold patriarchal ideas very well.

Freecuthbert · 17/01/2022 17:04

I never said I'm superior because I don't wear heels though

nordica · 17/01/2022 17:11

I used to wear them some years back and liked that they are so practical (important in the rainy weather we always seem to have), not slippery, and reasonably comfortable compared to many other shoes. Like a PP I also wear only barefoot shoes these days, mostly still ankle boots or chelsea boots during autumn/winter - just like the DMs, I love them for being practical, easy to run in if needed and weatherproof. I haven't worn heels for over 10 years and don't plant to either - my mum wore heels for decades and she has foot problems forever now.

I thought school bullies grew out of it eventually. Clearly not.
cakewench · 17/01/2022 17:35

Your example pictures are of course platforms which are the chunkiest boots they have Hmm

TBH boots are other flat shoes are more on trend than heels, which seem to be worn less and less as younger women eschew them. Thank goodness.

That having been said, I've started to dislike DMs because the soles wear through so fast now, nothing at all like my older DMs. I've moved on to (massive, manly) Timberlands.

Sparklesocks · 17/01/2022 17:40

Just like anything in life isn’t it? Some people will like it some won’t.
Some people probably think your fashion choices and taste are lovely and others will think they’re rubbish. Would be extremely dull if we all liked the same things.

Momicrone · 17/01/2022 17:42

They're very popular with teenagers round my way

Notjustanymum · 18/01/2022 04:00

Well, I don’t understand the obsession with Vans, but all it means is that I don’t buy or wear them! Each to their own, OP!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 18/01/2022 11:25

Something nobody has yet said about DMs as against stilettos: I have never yet seen one heel come off a pair of DMs leaving the wearer with completely unmatched pair of shoes that were impossible to walk in.

Bitbloweyoutthere · 18/01/2022 11:47

"Oddball goths"Grin

We thought we were so cool though. I'm deeply wounded anyone ever thought I was an "oddball". I used to feel more comfortable with:"you fucking freaks!", accompanied by a missile of some description.

Or seen women walking home barefoot carrying their DMs after a night out.

I've always loved high heels, even though hypermobile ankles mean I can't wear them any more. They can look lovely, but even the most well made heels can't match the comfort of a pair of chunky boots.

amiafreakofnature · 18/01/2022 16:52

Some of these comments are like they are straight from the Stepford WI

Lots of comments about being unfeminine and bosom hoiking

I wear them and STILL look feminine because erm I'm a female!

EraOfTheGrey · 18/01/2022 19:05

Solovairs are the best boots I've ever owned and I've owned dozens of DM's over 35 years. I've sold 6 pairs of DM's and selling a further 3 pairs soon. These are my qualifications regarding DM's verses Solovairs. I currently own 4 pairs of Solovairs.

Regarding sizes I would say they are the same but they have sizing information on the Solovair website detailing sizing in cm's. The 'lasts' are different throughout the range and you'll find some boots ie Astronaut boots are narrow in comparison to the Derby boots. Having said all that the returns are really easy and free. Plus Solovair sell half sizes so that is another difference between them a Dr Marten. Half sizes are few and far between with DM's

StrangerYears · 23/01/2022 00:11

@ VelvetChairGirl @ShinyMe

I took a punt on Solovair- we live in Australia, so it was a big punt.
Their website says draw around your foot, measure heel to toe and then go for size that matches.
We found it very accurate and my teen never had problems with them rubbing her feet.
My mate (a big fan of DMs) was impressed at how comfortable they were from day 1. She is off to buy a pair. Much softer than DMs

On not in

lightisnotwhite · 23/01/2022 22:21

I’ve always worn flats, from Pixie boots in 80’s to DM style shoes in early 90’s to walking boots and boot cuts in the early 2000’s

But to all the smug flats crew, women haven’t had a revelation. It’s only a matter of time before clogs with chunky heels are back and then heels for evening wear will be with us again. Just as we struggled through the pain from those tough old boots, we’ll be back to balancing on a heel. Not me obviously but the lot that come after this lot of teens.

EIIa · 24/01/2022 05:31

Do you think so? I’m sure heels are gone for good

I really hope they are - I have only worn flats since sMy first child was born 12 years ago. Grateful my fee have had a break from them tbh
