To not understand the obsession

With DM boots?

I think they are so ugly & chunky. Every time I see them on I think to myself, why would anyone buy them?! They are really masculine looking.

My DC love them and have tried 3 or 4 pairs each. Having suffered shredded feet every single time and after endless wears they have given up for comfort.

tigger1001 · 16/01/2022 22:19

@ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind

YANBU, DMs are hideous. It will be one of those trends people look back on and cringe.
I bought my first pair of dm when I was 16 and am now late 40's. Still love them. So that's a long lasting trend for me
Topseyt · 16/01/2022 22:20

I don't have any, but do like the look of many of them. They seem a very practical sort of shoe to me.

I like practical shoes. High heels are ridiculous and dangerous. I can't walk in them. I mostly wear trainers, but would consider DMs.

KarenTheGammonRemoaner · 16/01/2022 22:23

They are ugly and my husband got married in these and every time he tries to wear them they hurt his feet. Too chunky, maybe they work on smaller feet but not my size sevens. Not a fan. The obsession is pure conformity.

Nah. I'm size 9 and they are the comfiest shoes I own. Apart from my camping crocs. Nothing to do with conformity
ghostmouse · 16/01/2022 22:24

I have a pair of these. Soft leather and really comfy

I don't think there's an obsession with them, they've been around for decades and are a classic style - I don't see that many people wearing them near me.
Don't understand the feminine comment and can't stand high heels - I didn't think anyone really wore them anymore. Surely a classic pair of DMs look smarter than a pair of trainers?
I do agree about the ones with really thick soles though, and don't like the sandals either but each to their own, I can't get worked up about it and there are much worse fashions around.

godmum56 · 16/01/2022 22:27

OP....you don't have to understand "the obsession". Wear them; don't wear them.....like them, don't like them.....its no big deal.

FirewomanSam · 16/01/2022 22:29

I wore Doc Martens on my wedding day. I can promise you I didn’t look remotely ‘masculine’ in them!

TrainspottingWelsh · 16/01/2022 22:29

@RosesAndHellebores it's a long time since I bought any new, if I want more I tend to go for vintage and therefore worn in. But dc's have had new (and inferior imo). You need to repeatedly rub saddle soap and in and sit and bend and knead them to soften them. (Ko cho line is also good on a semi regular basis) And then you gradually wear them for longer periods.

plominoagain · 16/01/2022 22:31

Worn them for almost 30 years for work as I can’t chase suspects in heels.

If you think they’re chunky , you should see my Magnums .

RosesAndHellebores · 16/01/2022 22:33

@TrainspottingWelsh - they have reconciled themselves to more comfortable footwear now. But what is the point. Why on earth does anyone persevere with shoes that hurt?

I think they are so ugly & chunky. Every time I see them on I think to myself, why would anyone buy them?! They are really masculine looking.

I can remember in the early eighties women who were busy crippling their feet for life saying justabout exactly this. DMs haven't gone away. And they go on not crippling women. Wikipedia suggests that women with sense have liked DMs for longer than that; they were first sold in 1947, and "The comfortable soles were a big hit with housewives, with 80% of sales in the first decade to women over the age of 40." I don't wear them myself because they are too expensive, but that's the only reason I don't have a pair.

Those of us who didn't cripple our feet wearing shoes apparently designed to be impractical and bad for us don't now have the corns, the shortened tendons, the bone damage, and all the rest of the ills caused by stiletto heels.

Oh, and do be careful and selective about those trainers: some of them play merry hell with your Achilles tendon.

StrangerYears · 16/01/2022 22:40

I'm not as keen on DMs- mainly because they masquerade as a British made boot when they are made in China.

Solovair - made in Northampton- are far better and much softer leather.

But chunky boots look amazing and are so much better for feet and legs than heels are

EveningOverRooftops · 16/01/2022 22:43

I can wear mine for hours a day. Comfy, dry, warm feet and not foot pain from the stupid unsupportive flats aimed at women.

It’s about my foot health, my back health and overall comfort.

I also wear the ‘ugly’ Birkenstocks too.

I’m obsessed about women not having to conform to beauty standards that leave us in pain, uncomfortable and risking serious health issues or surgery from frivolous stuff and fashion.

MedusasBadHairDay · 16/01/2022 22:45

Love a pair of DMs, or DM lookalikes for that matter, I just like chunky boots 🥰

slightlysnippy · 16/01/2022 22:46

Because people like different things, it's that fuckin simple.

MarshmallowFondant · 16/01/2022 22:47

I love my Dr Martens. I have one brown fur lined pair, and one black pair, both Chelsea boot style.

Agree with others that it's all about the practicality. They are indestructible, keep your feet dry, and you can walk for miles in them - once you've broken them in.

Personally I think people who totter around in high heels are asking for a broken ankle. And that trainers should be kept for training.

KO81 · 16/01/2022 22:47

I think women who wear heels are maniacs. I wouldn’t wear a shoe on a night out that would actively prevent you from being able to run away.

TimeForTeaAndG · 16/01/2022 22:47

Love my DMs.

You'd have a fit at my New Rock boots if you think DMs are chunky 🤭

Gwenhwyfar · 16/01/2022 22:48

@iklboo

Sorry, chuck. I'm not going to wear 6 inch heels for you or anyone else.
OP hasn't asked you to wear heels Confused
Gagagardener · 16/01/2022 22:48

My daughter has foot and knee problems and chose them for comfort and support when she switched to teaching and realised she'd be on her feet pretty much all day. She worried a bit about them, but decided they helped youngsters in her secondary classroom decide not to mess with Miss.

, ! She worriedxa

Quantity5 · 16/01/2022 22:49

I have always found their chunkiness rather over stated. I prefer a more rugged sole.

Wilburisagirl · 16/01/2022 22:51

My last pair of Docs lasted 10 years, 5 of those years I wore them 4-6 days per week in busy hospitality jobs. They are without doubt the most comfortable and durable shoes I have owned. I do love high heels too, but it's a case of different horses for different courses.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 16/01/2022 22:51

People making fun of heels should at least get their facts right. 6-inch heels are physically impossible to wear unless accompanied by the platform. The highest are 5 inches, the most common ones are 2.5-4 inches.
But I guess 6 is a nice round number to gloat about self-righteously.
