To not understand the obsession

With DM boots?

I think they are so ugly & chunky. Every time I see them on I think to myself, why would anyone buy them?! They are really masculine looking.

@RosesAndHellebores but that's it, once the leather is no longer stiff and new, they are as comfortable as slippers. Fair enough if they've found other footwear they prefer, but short of going everywhere in my old riding boots or ancient hunters I can't think of anything that I find as comfortable and practical.

longtompot · 16/01/2022 22:53

YABU

Comfort

Well, once they are broken in, but still much more comfort than 6" heels

RosesAndHellebores · 16/01/2022 23:01

I'll stick to my Josef Siebel sandals in summer and Gabor chunky boots in winter. Never done heels. Never done discomfort.

amusedbush · 16/01/2022 23:03

I'm a bisexual millennial - Docs are mandatory Grin

MmeD · 16/01/2022 23:05

Love mine. Feel like I’m walking on air. I have small feet and wear mine with ribbon laces patterned with roses.

My mum would agree with you that they’re disgustingly masculine but to be honest, that adds to their charm Grin.

3scape · 16/01/2022 23:06

Heels look flimsy and ineffective. They are also impractical on soft surfaces, slippy surfaces, uneven surfaces - basically most of the outside and a few indoor surfaces. If we're just putting opinions out.

I'd rather be thought of as practical than incapable.

Nat6999 · 16/01/2022 23:10

I am looking at the Lenore fur lined Chelsea boots & the 1460 Vonda floral ones. I think the pandemic has increased women's interest since WFH. I can't think of anything worse than tottering around in heels all day, I know I used to when I worked but now can't imagine anything worse.

TheMoth · 16/01/2022 23:16

Because I've been wearing them for almost 30 years. Yes, I flirted with combat boots and new rocks and have spent my working life in an entire range of styles, but I've come back to my first loves.

The rule was generally docs 9 months of the year and trainers for 3.

TheMoth · 16/01/2022 23:17

My feet never recovered from my first ever pair though.

42isthemeaning · 16/01/2022 23:31

@VelvetChairGirl

Can you not go to the shop they have a few stores

Nope! I live in the arse end of nowhere.

Jewel52 · 16/01/2022 23:38

Always loved ‘em, remind me of my student days! Don’t agree with the masculine thing either as they look equally great with a skirt. Whereas I think UGGs don’t suit anyone,

EatDrinkEatDrink · 16/01/2022 23:41

I had a pair exactly the same as the ones everyone wears now, when I was 11, in the mid 90s. I wouldnt wear them now. I did try a pair on recently and thought they looked like workman's boots, just ugly and manly, i bought some nice women's boots instead. My 6 year old does have a pair of multicoloured sparkley ones, they look nice on her, I looked ridiculous.

itwasntaparty · 16/01/2022 23:44

Bloody love mine, I've always worn them. I don't like having wet feet, and I want to be comfortable.

My kids have the shoes for school, so much better than the crappy Velcro strap Clarks offerings. They also have boots for the weekends and they have helped so much with knee pain that they used to have from hyper mobility.

I won't ever wear heels again and ideally would libe in flip flops but that doesn't really work in English winters.

saleorbouy · 16/01/2022 23:48

DM's aren't what they used to be, I had several pairs in my teens that travelled miles, backpacking, partying and general daily use.
It seems DM production is now in Asia.
Solovair boots are made in the U.K at the old DM production facility if you want you support U.K industry, based on the DM design.
By all accounts they're a better boot too!

Mulhollandmagoo · 16/01/2022 23:50

You don't need to 'understand the obsession' if you don't like them, don't wear them, but if someone does like them, they do wear them. It really is as simple as that.

Jenasaurus · 17/01/2022 00:00

I know these arent DMs but as a lady with skinny legs and a bit of a belly, I would look like this if I wore them

To not understand the obsession
Djmaggie · 17/01/2022 00:02

I wouldn’t say masculine but I do think they’re ugly and chunky. I live in a rather fashion forward NW city and very rarely see them to be honest

Itsonlymeeee · 17/01/2022 00:07

I wear doc martin/biker style boots all the time in winter & rocket dog daps all year round. I used to love a high wedge shoe/boot (have never been able to wear stilettos) but due to rheumatoid arthritis & fibromyalgia I can't wear "ladylike" shoes. I had to give all of my wedges & ballet pumps to my 2 dds as I could no longer walk in them without being in shit loads of pain. I'm 53 & all of my family like my style including my 13yo ggd who is my go to person to check I don't look like mutton!

Viviennemary · 17/01/2022 00:11

They are the ugliest most horrible things ever. Not keen on those ghastly jimmy choo things either. So its not either or.

Stompythedinosaur · 17/01/2022 00:18

I think anyone who is worried enough about looking "masculine" to post a thread about it should probably take a look at their internalised sexism.

mathanxiety · 17/01/2022 00:20

YABU

They are brilliant, practical boots, well made, and they last and last.

They look great with the currently fashionable not-skinny jeans.

rubydoobydoo · 17/01/2022 00:20

You are being totally unreasonable! I have 6 pairs of DMs ranging from plain ones for work to various colours of sparkly ones for everything else, no other boots have ever come close.
I am currently coveting a pair of the fur lined ones as my feet are always freezing!

mathanxiety · 17/01/2022 00:21

But I guess 6 is a nice round number to gloat about self-righteously.

No, it's the assonance in 'six-inch' that makes the phrase irresistible.

Heels are bad for your back and your feet. Their only purpose is to make your bum stick out and give passing men something to look at.

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 17/01/2022 00:22

As long as they don’t have red or blue laces, I was shocked when I realised dm boot lace colour were significant

rubydoobydoo · 17/01/2022 00:25

What does the lace colour signify? I replaced the laces on my first pair with purple ribbons.
