Hate new stair carpet

Total first world problems I realise. Have attached pics. Gah, I hate it! I don’t know exactly what I’m asking but aibu, and if not what should I do!

I also wouldn't be quick to change it. I'd add some plants and make a commitment to live with it for a year. If I still hated it as much at the end of the year, then look to change it.

A year is really no time at all, and may make the difference.

Sorry spindles that lead up to the wooden bannisters.

MarshaBradyo · 16/01/2022 11:28

It’s not great and clashes with black and white in rest of pic

I’ve been to a few houses with just painted stairs which have looked good

MrsWhites · 16/01/2022 11:34

I agree with those who think the carpet isn’t the problem, it’s the lack of interest in the staircase. You can see this particularly on the photograph from the door. The only thing to draw the eye is the carpet, add some consistent neutral tones to the walls and a plant pot in the same tones in the hall wall to bring everything together.

Paint the banister and spindles in the same tones or strip it down and re-stain it to be mode neutral oak colour if possible.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/01/2022 11:34

People have such different tastes, I wouldn't say it clashes at all. I think you need to live with it a while. Definitely don't paint stairs or spindles before you have.
Stand by my suggestion of stair rods, agree with PP that they could be expensive but probably less so than a new carpet and will last for ever.
Dress the area as others have suggested with plants and pictures and the carpet will be less 'in your face'.

BarkminsterBlue · 16/01/2022 11:37

Job no 1 - big palm to go in this corner in a large pot or on a stand. Morrisons often have big specimens quite cheaply.

It looks much nicer from the door.

MarshaBradyo · 16/01/2022 11:38

Btw by painted I just mean the white you have.

BackBackBack · 16/01/2022 11:39

I really like it. I'd paint the bannister black, get some art or pictures on the wall, a trailing plant on the window. I wouldn't change the stair or wall colours - but then I like plain and light paint.

It looks quite stark now but it's the shock of the new. Once you have got used to it and softened the whole look, I think it will grow on you.

TequilaShot · 16/01/2022 11:41

I think the actual carpet looks lovely but my eyes are drawn towards the brown taping which looks a lot better black to match the railings.

BackBackBack · 16/01/2022 11:41

And possibly stair rods as an accent would look good. Agree with @BarkminsterBlue suggestion of a big upright plant by the bottom - a large parlour palm would look good. Check supermarkets and IKEA as they do them quite cheaply.

ListeningButNotHearing · 16/01/2022 11:42

I think you've chosen really well.

Particularly now that you have posted the last photo it all ties in really well with your beautiful painted glass windows.

It's absolutely stunning because it's all understated (not fussy with lots of conflicting colours) and very tasteful.

DCINightingale · 16/01/2022 11:43

Didnt like it in your first pic but the view from the door I do like it. I think you can salvage this and make it work. The green of the door works with it in the picture so yes to some nice green plants, will help to tie it all together. Worth a shot, before going for a replacement

grey12 · 16/01/2022 11:43

Got it! Could you match the railing wood colour more to the floor? It's a bit orange in comparison

Beautiful entrance btw!!

Ashard20 · 16/01/2022 11:45

It's funny how we all process colours differently, isn't it?
For me, it echoes the two-tone bannister and works really well. Admittedly the shades aren't identical, but the overall effect is unified.

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/01/2022 11:46

Do you think taking the taping off and getting whipped edges would be better. Funnily enough the taping was the thing I really wasn’t sure about when we were first deciding. I originally wanted no taping

NotTheGrinchAgain · 16/01/2022 11:46

Oh yes it is too brown! What a shame.
Replace your light bulbs with Hue bulbs (or cheap equivalent) and use a blue-ish lighting, it will suck the brown hues out. Also you want to make the walls pure white.

Wilkolampshade · 16/01/2022 11:47

The supplier won't be able to re-sell the runner as they are very specifically cut, in more than one piece to each staircase.
It's fine. Move onto the next job.

SoupDragon · 16/01/2022 11:47

I don't think the problem is necessarily the carpet, I think it's the lack of anything else that means your eyes are immediately drawn to the only think in the hall. Stair rods would help break it up.

SpacePotato · 16/01/2022 11:52

Are you actually living there? Renovating to move in? So empty.

Fill the house with life and the carpet will blend in. Furniture, artwork, plants, big mirror.

Why are you concerned about reselling it already?

Cstring · 16/01/2022 11:55

You have a lovely house, the comments like 70’s Childrens home and accountants office are just nasty. I stand by my first comment that it’s just the black/ brown bannister that is jarring. The carpet is fine.
hivemindneeded · 16/01/2022 11:56

It doesn't work with that wall colour. All too drab and neutral. But if you gave the walls some oomph, it would be fine. If you don't want to redecorate, just add some strong prints or paintings or photos on the walls and a plant or striking vase on the window sill to draw the eye away from the carpet. At the moment it is the loudest statement in the hallway and too dull to carry that job. But once you have more interesting things for the eye to look at, it will do its job as neutral background.

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/01/2022 11:56

I’m not concerned about reselling. We’ve only just moved in!

Twitterwhooooo · 16/01/2022 12:00

If you've only just moved in and decorated, definitely don't do anything drastic.

We have a large plant by the front door and I'm always struck by how bare the hall looks when it's in the sink being watered.

And give it a while for shoes, things to be taken upstairs etc appear on the stairs and hallway - you'll barely notice the carpet then!

Couple of colourful pictures on the wall would be nice too when you get round to it.

Otherwise, enjoy those lovely newly varnished floorboards! So satifying!
