Total first world problems I realise. Have attached pics. Gah, I hate it! I don’t know exactly what I’m asking but aibu, and if not what should I do!

Can you take it up and have the border changed? Something different at the edge might make it look less brown all round. If that isn't an option I think something on that mid-step like a plant or small telephone table with a vase (hard to tell how much space there is) and some pictures on the walls might help it look less brown.

I don't think it's that bad really - it's on stairs so not somewhere you'll spend time like a living room etc. it's striking which is a good thing on stairs

2ndMrsdeWinter · 16/01/2022 10:48

I agree with @Bonnieonthelam - I would paint the hand rails to match the rest of the staircase and add a mixture of prints/art with some frames in gold AND black to tie the neutrals together.

WorraLiberty · 16/01/2022 10:51

I love it!

Youngstreet · 16/01/2022 10:52

Don't paint anything until you've tried accessories.
Pictures, plants or mirrors.
Then if your still not happy paint the easy things first.

Aaaa1167336 · 16/01/2022 10:53

Nup can’t be saved. Plants, pictures will not take away from the fact that the colour is awful, both institutional and dirty looking, and the carpet itself looks cheap. I have made a mistake like this so have so much sympathy but waiting/trying to fix by adjusting decor is no point. Visitors/potential buyers will have exactly the same reactions as you. Change it, stump up the money and try to forget about it. Btw I would not touch the lovely bannisters at all, the carpet is the problem as your ref pictures show. I wouldn’t go for sisal either it will date very quickly.

C152 · 16/01/2022 10:53

It's not what I woud choose, but there's nothing wrong with it. If you don't like it, the only options are to live with it (you might get used to it and come to like it over time) or, if you can afford it, rip it up and re-do it.

JabNotInArm · 16/01/2022 10:53

Black would work I think

MadameHomais · 16/01/2022 10:55

I wouldn’t rush into changing it.
It’s quite different from what was there originally. Which can take time to adjust to. It also differs from your expectations of how it would look.
Give yourself time to acclimatise to it. You may start to find it more acceptable.
For what it’s worth I think it is in keeping with the style of the stair case and is rather smart.
In the course of my work I have extensive experience of interior design.

zebrarobot · 16/01/2022 10:58

It looks a bit like the door mat I have outside the door for people to wipe their feet on.

I honestly would change it, the brown doesn't go with the stair case colour, unless you are going to paint it (which I assume would have been done before a new carpet laid.)

Hopefully you find a way to make it work.

Bluebluemoon39 · 16/01/2022 10:59

Brown/beige are on their way back in OP - you'll just look ahead of the trends.

Also, SO forgiving for mucky shoes.

speakout · 16/01/2022 11:00

Sory I do;t like it either. ooks like a carpet in a backstreet acountant office.
It's a pity because the stair itself is lovely, period bannisters, high skirting and a window. It has the potential to look beautiful- the paintwork needs some thought too.
I would be tempted to rip it up and start again- but depends on your situation- can you afford to do that? If you have toddlers and a big hairy dog then the carpet may not last long anyway and you may be replacing in a couple of years.
If this was a long term choice I wouldn;t want to live with it if I had the money to change it.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 16/01/2022 11:00

I like it and it is much better than your later photos.

Give it time, you will get used to it.

Ddot · 16/01/2022 11:02

Stair rods would look nice but expensive. I think it just needs some colour. Maybe a large plant some pictures and one of those whicker stair baskets

Kuachui · 16/01/2022 11:03

definitely victorian feeling, would look lovely with lots of planta and greenery but i think more jute colours would have looked better

chaosrabbitland · 16/01/2022 11:05

i really love this ,it ties in with the downstairs bit and the walls .

ThanksItHasPockets · 16/01/2022 11:08

Have a look at the Instagram account 'victorianadventure'. They have a beautiful runner on their stairs in ecru, with black and ecru striped taping and the stairs painted black, then the same combination of black spindles and wooden handrails that you have.

Just needs a large glass of wine and a chill. It's fine, really nice.

Youngstreet · 16/01/2022 11:11

I think the main problem is playing safe.
You'd have been better taking a risk with a more luxurious colour.
If you do change it then I think you need quite a large sample to get a proper idea before you commit.

longcoffeebreak · 16/01/2022 11:13

the clash with the bannisters is what is causing the problem

NewYearCalavicci · 16/01/2022 11:15

I can see the look you were going for but it's not quite hit the Mark.
It will be a heck of a faff but if take the carpet back up strip, sand , depending on the natural colour of the wood , stain and varnish it relay the carpet and use silver carpet rods

jazzandh · 16/01/2022 11:19

I really don't dislike it.

The banister rail colour does clash with the runner to a degree. There are plenty of varnishes available that will recolour the wood to the right tone.

Then I would get the big colour card from F&B and pick the right neutral wall colour that tones with the carpet. You will create layers then and the eye will not skip about.

Pick some pictures on the wall with black frames perhaps to pull it together.

The bones of it are fine - it will look lovely.

catchingzzzeds · 16/01/2022 11:19

I love it but would paint the handrails black, add a plant or two and add a piece of art and a statement mirror.
I think it's totally workable.

bilbodog · 16/01/2022 11:21

www.rogeroates.com/products/runners/

I love roger oates runners if you do decide to change it but although brown isnt my favourite colour i dont think it looks too bad.

RosesAndHellebores · 16/01/2022 11:23

I think it would look massively better if the stair rods were painted white. They draw the eye down to the dark carpet.

As far as the carpet goes I think you will be grateful of it once a muddy footprint or three have ascended the stairs.

There aren't any stair rods in the OP's picture?
