I just coming back to say I LOVE the black woodwork!! It’s the walls you need to change!

I think it's just the starkness of the walls. It looks very 'bare'.
It might be cheaper and nicer to put a colour on the walls.
Take the photo with you and get ideas from a good paint shop who do colour mixing. Better to spend a bit more on a good paint. The sides of the risers and treads also need to be painted. Then choose some appealing artwork for the walls.
@ilkleymoorbartat It's not awful, but I don't love it either. It's not so bad that I would remove it, but it does look a bit 'industrial' like something you'd see in a business/office block. Also looks a bit like a private let house. Not being a snob, and we have rented privately, and now rent social housing, but it does look a bit like something a private landlord would stick down as it's hard wearing and inexpensive.

Nice set of stairs though! Smile
Those stair runners are really really expensive! As have to be custom made. In my old place we had similar placed (with stair rods mind) and cost us well over a thousand

Classy and appears to suit the colour scheme. I don't think you'll notice after a while.
