Total first world problems I realise. Have attached pics. Gah, I hate it! I don’t know exactly what I’m asking but aibu, and if not what should I do!

I think you need something on the walls or to paint the walls or the bannister. Looks much better in the picture with the stained glass window.

flippertyop · 16/01/2022 12:04

I don't like it either but unless you buy another one what can you do? I think you will just have to live with it

Morethanthis71 · 16/01/2022 12:05

Could you wax the stairs around it so that it blends in more. Frenchic have a browning wax that can be applied on top of paint to give a natural look. I think this would make the stairs look warmer and the carpet would blend in.

flippertyop · 16/01/2022 12:06

Absolutely beautiful house though. Live the door and floorboards and the lights are lush

MrsWhites · 16/01/2022 12:06

@ilkleymoorbartat

Do you think taking the taping off and getting whipped edges would be better. Funnily enough the taping was the thing I really wasn’t sure about when we were first deciding. I originally wanted no taping
Definitely if that can be removed, it’s this that makes it look less neutral to me.

Have you considered stair rods too, I think they would look beautiful and tie in nicely with the period features in your home.

MysteriousMonkey · 16/01/2022 12:09

I feel neutral about it, although I must admit some of the posts above made me laugh... I would replica ethough. Two years ago I had carpet laid in my lounge and realised straight away I made a mistake. I pulled it up the next day and had an end roll fitted. I hate wasting money but it was better than living with a carpet I really disliked!

lorca · 16/01/2022 12:11

I like it - I really like it. It's minimalist and classic (a little bit too brown, but nothing I couldn't live with) I would also use some lovely stair rods. Stair runners look odd without them.

I think with a few pics on the walls, maybe something interesting on the windowsill, it would look at lot more - interesting. It def needs a bit more colour, but nothing too wild. I've got a similar brown (full carpet) on my stair, but there is my small collection of Ruscha wall plates at the top, which adds subtle colours, and light-sage-green walls.

LuluBlakey1 · 16/01/2022 12:13

I looks much nicer with the colours in the door on view and the palm. I think a few more examples of those colours and a pale dusty pink would be lovely with it.

Hornetfarmer · 16/01/2022 12:13

It looks utilitarian because there is nothing else there. Once you have dressed it, it would look great and you won't notice.
I'd paint the skirt on your bottom step black. Pictures on the wall. A plant somewhere and fairy lights around your bannisters.

Hornetfarmer · 16/01/2022 12:15

I like the taping. And I'd add stair rods.

I like the taping - it's the black spindles that don't work.
Sheabutterisdelish · 16/01/2022 12:18

I really like it! Beautiful entrance. Some people on here have been unbelievably rude tbh.

PizzaDays · 16/01/2022 12:18

Picture on the wall facing, so that that is what the eye is drawn to.

I wonder if it would be better if the stairs were totally painted white - I like the brown, but it’s almost too much with the carpet.

Thefaceofboe · 16/01/2022 12:19

I love this!!

footcushion · 16/01/2022 12:19

Keep the taping, go for stair rods and then decide.

divamunchkin · 16/01/2022 12:19

Can I ask what did you finish your floorboards with? They look lovely.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 16/01/2022 12:20

Not the point of your post, but why do your spindles go down the outside of your stairs? How do they hold the bannister up?
My spindles go from the bannister to the top of the stair tread areas?

footcushion · 16/01/2022 12:21

Or maybe all of the stairs should have been black - so I'd have painted the treads etc but left the wood handrail.

lucylwp · 16/01/2022 12:21

It looks very smart! I like it.

pandora206 · 16/01/2022 12:28

I think all that's needed is a piece of dramatic artwork (not too small) with a dark brown frame to set off the decor and pull the colour scheme together.

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/01/2022 12:29

I just wanted to say, I'm really appreciating everyone's suggestions.
@TheWordWomanIsTaken I think that was just the style, we didn't put them in, so not sure. Also @divamunchkin I'm not sure becauase we also didn't do anything to the downstairs floor. Sorry!

I think there’s too much going on with two colours in the bannister and two on the carpet. The bannister spindles would look much better painted white and keep the top rail varnished, then add some photos/paintings to add some colour & interest.

Twitterwhooooo · 16/01/2022 12:33

Good call about having some blue actually.

Always worked to suck the drabness out of rented house brown.

Nice blue plant pot would look great.

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/01/2022 12:39

Good luck @EvaLution Your choice looks lovely!

Once you've put some pictures up it will be fine. If you still hate it in a couple of years, change it then.
