Total first world problems I realise. Have attached pics. Gah, I hate it! I don’t know exactly what I’m asking but aibu, and if not what should I do!

It's a bit plain / drab looking but not terrible. I would just make the walls interesting / plants somewhere and make it a non feature. Or if you can afford to ditch it do that!

Starryskiesinthesky · 16/01/2022 08:56

@stuntbubbles

I can sort of see how if you wanted a neutral sisal type thing this would be disappointing, but it’s not bad! And your staircase overall is bloody gorgeous: I’m envious.

I’d embrace the tone/colour and whack up framed art, plants in pots, a rug that has some of the same tones in on the landing, etc. Your eye will tune out the runner eventually – it’s the shock of the new. And it looks brilliantly hard-wearing AND good at hiding dirt, the holy grail.

All that!
ilkleymoorbartat · 16/01/2022 08:56

It was just plain floorboards before. I find it really hard to decide on things anyway, especially with neutrals. I’ve no idea what I do. I’m absolutely sure they won’t give refunds!

I think you’re right @Bonnieonthelam - I initially read your comment and thought noooooooo, don’t cover natural wood with black paint but when I went back to the photo I think that would really work well.

Toadsinholes · 16/01/2022 08:57

It’s a bit browner than I would choose but it’s fine - & won’t show the dirt so much. I think the plant idea is a good one. You’ll get used to it - it looks like a lovely house/staircase.

Bonnieonthelam · 16/01/2022 08:57

Also bring lots of samples home and lay them in the area. The one you love will pop. Good luck. Keep us posted x

Roselilly36 · 16/01/2022 08:58

It’s a shame you are disappointed OP.

As a previous poster said, my first thought was utilitarian, on the plus side it looks like it will be hard wearing.

Perhaps you will get used to it, give it a couple of months, if you still hate it, change it.

fedup078 · 16/01/2022 08:58

It is a bit brown but I would live with it and eventually get used to it
Though I would add some brass stair rods

Bonnieonthelam · 16/01/2022 09:00

@DropYourSword thank you I really debated writing that but it will be the cheapest option. Plus all black looks smart. I love natural wood where possible but the black of the banisters is hard to compete against x

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/01/2022 09:01

Does anyone else have any ideas of what kind of other carpet might work?

Thanks @Bonnieonthelam I agree about the too many different neutrals. I think we he only thought about painting that bannister is if we ever changed the downstairs floorboards.

Could you change the colour of the white steps (to a brown / beige / charcoal?) to stop the carpet standing out quite so much? I also think green plants would help!

RedHot22 · 16/01/2022 09:02

At the moment it’s the focus point as there’s nothing else going on.

Plants, pictures, photos etc will make a massive difference.

Stair rods are a really good idea but I would go for black to tie in with the woodwork.

I think the reason it doesn’t look quite right is you have gone for a quite ‘trendy’ look with the black woodwork on the staircase but the carpet is very functional, the two don’t work together but maybe the addition of stair rods could help.

stuntbubbles · 16/01/2022 09:04

I think I agree on painting over the wood handrail with black. And potentially a caramel paint on the stairs instead of white, as per pp.

It seems such a waste to get rid rather than work with it! I wonder if you could get the edges retaped?

Maybe photoshop the suggestions to see what it would look like with stair rods, fully black bannisters, caramel stairs, wallpaper, etc - not all at once but lots of options.

AlbertBridge · 16/01/2022 09:04

It does look a bit like you'd go up those stairs to get legal advice, or a disappointing massage.

I think it's the edges. They look ugly. The actual carpet is fine.

Your house is GORGEOUS though.

Pegasussnail · 16/01/2022 09:04

This is softened by the plant and the pictures.
After a few weeks it won't be as noticeable to you.

Deffo paint the brown rails of the bannister so they match the upstands. They are jumping out to me as the problem. It will look soooo much better. Beautiful staircase.

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/01/2022 09:06

Thank you @AlbertBridge I feel like I’ve totally not done it justice and feel like a hit of an idiot tbh!
I was thinking about retaping but no idea what colour would work.

I think if you are going to change the carpet the main thing for me would be black edging rather than brown and I would go for a natural colour not dissimilar to your floorboards on the landing.
OMG12 · 16/01/2022 09:08

It has a very masculine feel, I would try and soften it with pictures and plants -if you are going for a minimalist approach you might have to change it if you don’t like it

GattoFantastico · 16/01/2022 09:08

If you're really thinking of taking it up and re-carpeting, I would go for something lighter with a fleck in it so you get the overall colour you want, without worrying about it looking grubby quickly.

I love the natural sisal look but in a heavy traffic part of the house it's sensible to have something with a fleck rather than plain. Yours is much too brown though. If you're sticking with it, plants and pictures will make a difference as pp have said. What about the banisters? Are you sticking with black?

WorriedGiraffe · 16/01/2022 09:10

I think it’s pretty ugly sorry, looks like one of those waterproof welcome mats turned massive to fit on stairs. Some pictures with dark coloured frames on the walls could help it blend in though? It’s quite hard to judge from one picture really but I’m sure it can look nice with the right furnishings

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/01/2022 09:12

There’s are some of the references I originally had. I don’t think there’s anyway I can fix what we have! The reason I didn’t originally go for black taping with this is it seemed too harsh.

A nice picture at the top of the stairs there with some of the colours in might help?

I think with the banisters being black it would look good with black taping
