Hi vegans!

Now I have your attention, can you please tell me what you would love to be seved at a dinner party for your starter main and dessert? DPs best friend's girlfriend is vegan and I don't want to palm her off with yet another stuffed pepper/mushroom risotto combo. She must be sick of it!

Bonus points for a crowd pleaser that'll do for everyone!

Grin Bravo!

100daysandBeyond · 13/01/2022 20:02

Bolognase, every time.
But a meat free version.

100daysandBeyond · 13/01/2022 20:02

OR a veggie lasagne.

I do DS vegan lasagne (dairy allergy) and it comes up well.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 13/01/2022 20:04

Not vegan but have been served a version of this and loved it!

She’s probably not sick of stuffed peppers/risotto. I can’t be bothered to make either at home, so would see these as a treat.
I don’t personally like bolognese, as can’t find a suitably nice ‘fake mince’. Although I could make it with lentils and chopped mushrooms I suppose 🤔

Holeyscarf · 13/01/2022 20:07

Oh man I am getting sick of the vegan hate and I am not even vegan.

Lockheart · 13/01/2022 20:08

Why don't you ask her what she'd like?

We can recommend no end of vegan things but they're fuck all use if she doesn't like them or might be allergic.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 13/01/2022 20:09

My Mum is vegan and whenever she visits I make multiple curries - they are so easy to do vegan! I also make her vegan chocolate brownies which is adores

Jacket Potato and beans......covers so many vegan/dietary reasons .......a classic 😆👍

Twizbe · 13/01/2022 20:11

Lentil and butternut curry. Really nice and you can do a mix of other dishes as well to cater for everyone.

Wildrobin · 13/01/2022 20:11

We aren’t vegan but love eating Indian so a good Dahl, rice and poppadums (we cook these fresh in rapeseed oil and they go all sorts of wonderful shapes ) are popular with the whole family

gogohm · 13/01/2022 20:12

Make 3-4 curries, serve with tandoori chicken, rice and fresh chapattis (or if you live in a city with a naan shop fresh naan, miss them). Curries reheat well so make ahead. Suggestions are a chickpea dal, a mushroom bhaji and a cauliflower coconut curry.

lochmaree · 13/01/2022 20:12

cauli wings Grin BOSH have a good recipe, with a herby cashew dip

I like the lasagne suggestion! depends on what kind of meal you want to do? burgers or sausages in rolls would be lovely. something tomatoey with garlic bread. at my wedding we had an amazing lentil shepherd's pie and a curry (as options, not together!) pad Thai is another good one. pies from 'the vegan skinhead' - amazing

dessert - fruit and Elmlea plant cream

Mia184 · 13/01/2022 20:12

Chili sans carne. I once served it alongside a normal chili con carne to 10 meat eaters (I am not vegan) and the vegan version was unanimously declared the better one. The spices were the same, the only difference was that the meatless chili contained soy granules instead of meat.

BackBackBack · 13/01/2022 20:12

Must admit I love mushroom risotto so I'm always happy to see it!

Does she like curry? There are some fab dhals which taste brilliant and are easy to make (and you might enjoy them as well).

BackBackBack · 13/01/2022 20:13

Or chilli - I make a five bean one which even my die hard meat eating father admits he loves.

HarlanPepper · 13/01/2022 20:13

Could you make a meal that everyone can eat? I love Indian food for this. I'm veggie (I was vegan for a few years) and if I have people over I might make two or three different curries, a couple of pickles, samosa, roti etc. But obviously that only works if you love Indian food like I do

rosettesforjill · 13/01/2022 20:14

Have a look at the Meera Sodha recipes in the Guardian - they're fantastic! www.theguardian.com/food/series/the-new-vegan

Rubyupbeat · 13/01/2022 20:14

Anything but lasagne, curry or bolognese, oh and frozen vegan burger.

Holeyscarf · 13/01/2022 20:14

@WhenISnappedAndFarted oh my sides Grin

HonuOnMyKnees · 13/01/2022 20:14

I made a Thai red curry last week for my vegan friends and they told me they loved it. I used tofu and loads of fresh veg plus all the usual spices and rice etc. My partner is vegetarian and I eat everything so it worked for us all.

Another option I make a lot is tacos made with jackfruit for the ‘meat’ (my partner and I load ours with cheese of course 😀)

I made avocado lime pie for dessert (like key lime pie but with raw/natural ingredients). Loads of raw desserts are vegan friendly but they can be pricey on ingredients.

A cheap and delicious option is ‘ice cream’ made from frozen bananas; really fast and easy (if you have a high speed blender or food processor).

If I needed a cheap and easy vegan dessert option that didn’t require equipment I’d probably do either coconut ice cream or coconut yoghurt with fruit/berries/seeds. I’ve previously had whipped coconut cream as part of a dessert which was really good too.

We didn’t do starters but I’d been contemplating a couple of options including some interesting salads (artichoke and green bean was one) or a Mediterranean type platter (olives, hummus, sun dried tomatoes dukkha etc, nice crusty bread or pita to dip it in).

lochmaree · 13/01/2022 20:14

also crispy tofu - coated in cornflour and fried. maybe with satay sauce

TopCatsTopHat · 13/01/2022 20:15

Thai yellow curry, I love it! Thai Taste do a great paste that you can get quickly on amazon, their red and green is also to notch. I know you could make your own paste but if you don't have a whole day to spend using a pestle and mortar it's a good one to buy, it contains all the stuff you'd put in yourself.
Then put in some lovely veg of infinite variety, don't overcook so the texture is right and serve with coconut or jasmine rice. Mmmm
