Aibu to be too embarrassed to get a shopping trolley.

I am 38 and I want one of those shopping trolleys that are basically a bag on a frame on wheels. I don't drive (don't start, tried both manual and automatic and can't get to grips with it also can't afford it) and I also don't like taking public transport so I tend to walk everywhere. But I also have hypermobility and during pandemic heights buggered myelbow carrying heavy shopping.
All in having a trolley would be very useful but I can't get passed being embarrassed about using one. Does anyone here have one that isnt of pension age?

Yabu you are still young and should put up with carrying everything it's extra exercise.

Yanbu go and get one they are fantastic. Age be damned.

I don't think I could pull of a bum bag I can't do ironically cool. I did used to have a backpack it was great for getting loads in but caused issues in my hips so I had to give that up.
I've decided to get one and although I can't justify dropping 150 on one I will either get one of those chic looking tote ones or just a plain black cheap jobby and "pimp" it.

I am 28 and would use one!

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 13/01/2022 21:14

I’ve literally just bought one on the strength of reading this thread. I’ve been umming and aahing about it for ages but I bit the bullet.

£20 in Argos. Blue polka dot one. I’m delighted. It’s enormous. I could fit a couple of small children in it and still have room for a basket shop.

Her maiden voyage is tomorrow and I’m very excited.

SlidingInto2022sDMs · 13/01/2022 21:25

OP, no need to splash £££ on a shopping trolley that's mainly marketing and branding. Lots of cheaper ones are great quality, last ages, do the same job and can fit more in. Mine many years ago, I bought for tenner (Completely new). Lasted me years till I stopped needing it and gave it away to charity. Still looked as good as new and could fit a whole lot!

A PP has just bought one from Argos for £20. That sounds about right.

VelmaandShaggy · 13/01/2022 22:05

Age is nothing to do with it, I used to have one at uni so I could do big shops and it felt really cool! Had a red one with polka dots. Get a funky one and go for it!!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 13/01/2022 23:05

I’d get one similar to this*. I’d be worried about things getting flattened in the tall bag style ones so with this one you could also hang bags of delicate food on the outside with a carabiner clip.

But yes OP, how attractive to do you feel while you are in pain struggling with your shopping bags? How often do you want to buy something but put it back because you don’t want to or can’t carry it. How about finding a good price on a larger sized item but passing on it because it’s too heavy.

Glad to hear you’re reconsidering you stance here.

*I just pulled an example not an endorsement

I got one when the children were too old to need a pushchair any more. I love it, and it means I'm far more likely to walk to the shops instead of driving. It's also great for carrying all the food, drinks, picnic chairs and beach kit when we are on holiday.

LittleOwl153 · 13/01/2022 23:33

What is it about people with hypermobility refusing to do what is clearly helpful to them because it might nit be trendy... not looking at you DD...

Anyway I've had once since I was about 30. I don't use it all the time but I do in the markets etc. Makes shopping so much easier. You can get all sorta of colours mine too is an okea daisy one!! Go for it!

1stWorldProblems · 13/01/2022 23:44

I'm on my second one - both Rolser. My current one folds up so you can hang it off the back of a shopping trolley - though I now scan & pack directly into mine. Was a god send when walking with slow toddlers & still is with heavy (wine) shops. The Rolser ones come in cool designs because in Spain they don't have the OAP connotations.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 14/01/2022 00:00

I have a bright pink Rolser. Had it for about10 years now. It's fab and makes a big Aldi shop easier to get home. I'm not old either

So practical! And as the comments in the video show, absolutely not just for older ones!

Nat6999 · 14/01/2022 00:30

I've used mine for going on the beach on holiday, fits the cool bag, beach mats, towels, my folding chair, tons better than lugging everything & has all terrain wheels.

user313213521 · 14/01/2022 00:38

I'm slightly younger than you and also have hypermobility and a bunch of other health issues.

I consider myself at least 20 years too young for a shopping trolley. I have an image to maintain Grin

My solution is a bike with 2x Ortlieb panniers, which are surprisingly roomy and completely waterproof (and a basket too depending on how much you need to buy; a trailer if you've a big family).

Gets me to and from the shops much quicker than walking, and I don't notice the weight of the shopping on the bike at all.

I'm short and was always the last kid to finish on sports day, in case you think I'm remotely athletic Grin

I got a loud funky patterned one and it’s brilliant. I got it when I was mid 30s had bright blue hair, piercings and tattoos. I don’t think I looked like a granny or a wally, just someone who wanted to get her shopping home.

JellyfishandShells · 14/01/2022 00:48

I keep one in the car boot - we have unpredictable parking patterns in our road ( no drives) and I find mine so useful for putting all the shopping in to get it back to the house from the end of the road.

I’ve got a funky patterned one but I really fancy a retro basket on wheels type, with a crook handle. And a little tartan cover for the top !

Disneydatknee88 · 14/01/2022 01:02

I don't drive and when my husband was working nights and sleeping all day, I had no choice but to do the food shop on my own and walk it all home. I had one of those trolly bags at the time and I was 23. Didn't bother me. Anything that didn't fit in the trolly bag was in carrier bags hung off it. Don't be embarrassed. Nobody will even give you a second look.

DedalusBloom · 14/01/2022 05:06

[quote Derbee]I can’t believe how nice some shopping trolleys are! I’ve never considered one, as I can’t imagine when I’d use it. But I love these...

I was just coming on to hype this one up! I'm coveting the green one!

UnsuitableHat · 14/01/2022 05:34

Yeahhhh get one, I bet there are some really nice ones out there. Haters be damned.

sashh · 14/01/2022 05:47

I have a rucksack that has wheels and a pull out handle - it was my uni bag.

My carer uses one of those crates with handles to get copious quantities of coke from Iceland. People have stopped him to ask where he got it.

Use anything that makes life easier.

Ostagazuzulum · 14/01/2022 06:41

I drive, where I live it's hard to walk
To a shop. I have zero need for one.
However I r recently
Saw a video with a girl (anais Gallagher - one of the daughters of an Oasis frontman, alll
Grown up and adult) who had one. It was a Strolli one in bright yellow. I loved it and was searching for it on internet as I could see the benefits, until I reminded myself I personally
Has no need for one, it honestly get it if it helps. If I needed one and could justify it I'd buy one.

I have a backpack trolley case from IKEA which I use for work and I love it! It’s eased the horrendous shoulder pain I was getting from having to carry so many heavy bags to and from work. I can even get on and off buses with it relatively easily.

TellMeItsPossible · 14/01/2022 07:17

I used one when my dc were too old for a buggy but still needed me to schlep things around for them, it was very handy and I didn't give a toss what other people thought. Why be uncomfortable- ever?! Get one!
