If there was an election tomorrow, who would you vote for?

Obviously the Tories are a complete shitshow, but Labour aren’t a lot better and I couldn’t hand on heart vote for either in good conscience right now.

So… IF a snap election was called, like in December 2019, who would you vote for? Would it make a difference to you if Boris was replaced as Tory leader? Would you even bother voting or maybe go for a totally different national or local party?

Just curious!

SDP party if we have a local candidate. They know what a woman is.

They're tiny so I've actually become a member to try and help get membership increased. I was impressed by their party conference opening speech.

luckylavender · 12/01/2022 21:06

@TheHamburgler

Tories have been in 11 or 12 years now, Labour had 13 years before that and danced us into a housing crash and economic recession.

Would Boris have fared better if Covid hadn’t come along? I think maybe yes. It’s clear he wanted to be a “good time” prime minister and just lead us through Brexit, waving union jacks and being jolly British.
If you’re going to blame Labour for a global recession, then you should blame Boris for Covid.

Do you understand what caused the recession or are you just throwing around words?!
PurpleRainlnTheSky · 12/01/2022 21:07

No idea. Not the fucking Tories though.

jynnerso · 12/01/2022 21:09

Labour. Anything else means 5 more awful years of Tory rule.

WhatDidISayAlan · 12/01/2022 21:10

Labour. I don’t agree with their stance on self ID but I’d suck it up and then increase my campaigning for change. Tories out.

ILiveAtNo10 · 12/01/2022 21:11

My vote doesn't necessarily count in a Tory heartland. I like my MP, he does a decent job locally, but the current conservative administration is sleaze personified.

baggies · 12/01/2022 21:16

Labour.
Unfortunately where I live Labour are the third party with a huge Tory majority. Probably have to vote tactically if there was any chance of ousting MP.

ddl1 · 12/01/2022 21:16

Probably LibDem, as they're the anti-Tory tactical vote in my constituency, and I like my MP. I would probably vote Labour in many other constituencies. I didn't like Corbyn, but I do like Starmer- OK, not terribly charismatic but we've had an overdose of charisma-without-substance.

PermanentTemporary · 12/01/2022 21:17

I'd want to vote Labour because I think Starmer is a grown up, a compromiser and an intelligent person, but I will have to vote Lib Dem here because it matters more to me to keep out a Conservative.

I wouldn't vote Tory for Liz Truss because although I do think she is in outline gender critical, she has mainly latched onto that issue as a USP for herself and she's frankly not much of a prize on any other front. I wouldn't trust her not to posture about it while not doing the hard work to build bridges. In fact I think Jess Phillips is more impressive in trying to find a gynophilic way forward.

LakieLady · 12/01/2022 21:18

LD, but it would be a tactical vote. I live in a Tory/LD marginal.

If Labour stood a chance of winning here, I'd vote for them.

RunRunGingerbreadMan · 12/01/2022 21:19

Anyone but Tory.

Unforgettablefire · 12/01/2022 21:23

Labour.

AliveAndSleeping · 12/01/2022 21:23

The Tories are a shit show and labour isn't great but how anyone can even compare these two parties is beyond me.

The Tories are opportunistic, amoral chancers who are only in politics to make money. They would sell their own grandmother down the river if it gave them an advantage and they would sell your grandmother down the river just for kicks. The current government on top of being corrupt and dishonest is also incredibly incompetent.

Labour on the other hand has got a few bad eggs, some misguided policies and are generally a bit meh... but whatever their faults are I think most of them are got into politics because they want to help this country and its people. I don't think that most of them are corrupt or criminal. I think quite a few might be incompetent but because they care they will learn Andaz least they will try

No, even if Boris Johnson resigns I wouldn't vote for them. Anyone who is propping up the current government doesn't have an iota of morality or humanity in their body.

If there was an election now I'd vote labour just to get the Tories out. In a few years maybe greens. My ideal government would be a labour - green coalition.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 12/01/2022 21:24

It is very difficult because I live in a very strong Tory area, Labour honestly wouldn't get a look in, so that leaves the Lib Dems, if they had a really good candidate, I would probably vote for them.

Local and national politics seem very divided at the moment. The local Conservative councillors, whilst generally supporting their party are being quite honest about the trickle flood down effect that austerity measures have had on their ability to provide local services. They are being very open and honest about the need to increase council tax, given the huge reductions in funding from central government, and their need to please voters by keeping the council tax at a static rate, another tax that will have an effect on peoples standard of living, which will come into effect at the end of March, along with fuel bills, inflation and NI increases. Plus Brexit issues.

I personally don't think this Government will fall because of lockdown parties, I think this will happen because of the constant drip, drip, drip effect on peoples incomes and standards of living.

If these have a candidate in my area they get my vote

Mine too!
Stripyhoglets1 · 12/01/2022 21:31

All politicians are very much not the same! If you vote tory then own it - don't excuse it by giving the ridiculous reason that they are all the same. No way kier starmer and BJ are in any way the same. There are so many differences between the 2 main parties and their politicians. Labour broadly want to make life better for people. The tories want minimal tax spend even if people die and have miserable lives.

Labour have alot on line about what they doing, how they oppose the govt, their views on matters, what they stand for, what they would do. The appear like a weak opposition because so much of the msm is right wing so keeps them out the news. Also the corbyn wing wants kier out and a disaster like corbyn back in. So they're also peddling this. But its there if you look for it.

Stripyhoglets1 · 12/01/2022 21:34

I should say tories want minimal tax spend on improving society. They are quite happy to spend it on lining their own pockets and their cronies pockets.

DerAlteMann · 12/01/2022 21:36

Lib-Dem. Labour is a wasted vote here. The local CLP all go down the pub if their candidate saves their deposit.

Littlecaf · 12/01/2022 21:39

What is self ID?

I’d vote Labour because they actually care about public sector and society rather than Tories who are all about money and self interest.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 12/01/2022 21:39

Green. They have always been thought of as a "no hopers" but I voted green in our local election and they are in! And our local councillor is really really good.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 12/01/2022 21:40

Lib Dem. Always voted for them except for the last GE when I voted labour.

Pyewhacket · 12/01/2022 21:42

Conservative, the alternative is too awful to think about.

soisealta · 12/01/2022 21:42

Probably Greens or SNP. I like their stance on medical cannabis.

Greenfields124 · 12/01/2022 21:42

I am a previous labour voter, but I can't vote for them anymore with their contempt for women.

If Liz Truss was to take Boris' place, I would vote conservative.
As she is for preserving women's rights and isn't afraid to say so, she would definitely get my vote.

grannyjacob · 12/01/2022 21:42

I’m in Scotland, in an SNP stronghold, so my vote has essentially been “wasted” for years. I don’t support the fight for Independence, plus Nicole Sturgeon is rabidly pro self-ID (she outright lied today about how the country voted SNP at the last election, so proving they obviously supported this. No, people vote SNP because of the Independence issue).

All the other main parties except the Conservatives are also pro self-ID, but I really don’t think I could bring myself to vote Conservative.
I voted Green and/or Liberal Democrat for many years, and still favour many points in their respective manifestos. For the first time in 50 years of voting, I’d almost certainly abstain, but feel incredibly guilty for doing so.
