If there was an election tomorrow, who would you vote for?

Obviously the Tories are a complete shitshow, but Labour aren’t a lot better and I couldn’t hand on heart vote for either in good conscience right now.

So… IF a snap election was called, like in December 2019, who would you vote for? Would it make a difference to you if Boris was replaced as Tory leader? Would you even bother voting or maybe go for a totally different national or local party?

Just curious!

www.libdems.org.uk/plan

Hopperrock Not immediately obvious, in fact I couldn't find any actual manifesto on that link, but it's called Fair Votes.

hopperrock · 13/01/2022 09:29

Ah yes, thanks very much for the link @NiceShrubbery
Well that's a place to start if people are fed up because their vote doesn't count, vote for the party (with the best chance of governing) that is promising PR.

BasketBlocks · 13/01/2022 09:31

I’d vote Labour.

We have a good constituency MP and they’re the best shot of getting rid of the current shower.

stuckdownahole · 13/01/2022 09:42

@AllThePogs

There always seem to be a lot of Conservative Bots on MN.
Yes, they are clearly bots because no-one in real life supports the Conservatives. They have only been in power for 27 of the last 40 years.

Jesus wept.

AntiHop · 13/01/2022 09:43

Labour. No party is perfect but their values align with mine.

custardbear · 13/01/2022 09:47

JVT - but unfortunately he's not a politician

NiceShrubbery · 13/01/2022 09:47

Jesus wept also because the Tories on here act like bots so it's fair to call them that. Same predictable old lines about having a good constituency MP, things not being that bad really and nobody else being able to do better. None of them actually think about the wider implications of who they're voting for.

WorkEvent · 13/01/2022 09:48

Genuinely don’t know. I loathe Starmer but would usually align myself with Labour values. Green is a possibility.

Don't vote for personalities.

Vote on broad principle - for policies and political direction.

Sabire9 · 13/01/2022 09:55

@NiceShrubbery

Will never happen without PR voting

And PR will never happen until people split the vote strategically and stop voting for the effing Tories and Labour. Got to start somewhere!!

What do you think will happen if we have a FPTP system where the vote is massively split, but where (as WILL happen) Conservatives have the largest proportion?

🤨

Biker47 · 13/01/2022 09:56

Conservatives, stuck having a string of uninterested Labour MP's where I live, historically they're the closest chance of ousting Labour.

Brindle88 · 13/01/2022 09:59

I’ll vote for the candidate who has the best chance of ousting our local Tory MP.

CorrBlimeyGG · 13/01/2022 10:02

Vote on broad principle - for policies and political direction.

This is my thinking. In my constituency, anything other than Conservative or Labour is a wasted vote. I've seen the impact of austerity (on women in particular), and I could never vote for that. I don't agree with all of Labour's policies, but I know that a Labour MP would be a massive help to the town. I can put aside my own issues and views (which would be closer to the Greens) for the greater good.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 13/01/2022 10:04

Would vote Labour. But we really really need PR.
I think if we’d had PR Brexit wouldn’t have happened.

NashvilleQueen · 13/01/2022 10:05

I'd vote tactically here to get the Tories out. So Lib Dem through gritted teeth.

I would like to see a Labour government in any general election. They're not perfect but a damn sight better than this shower. I grew up in the Thatcher years and I never thought I'd see the day when I would take them over another Conservative government.

For me it's the total lack of integrity. With public office comes an expectation of honesty and rigour. We have become a nation that applauds fancy footwork with the truth and it sickens me. Unquestionably Johnson has lied in parliament on at least one occasion about his knowledge or participation in these events. The fact that's now just accepted and we move on to the next scandal 72 hours later with no consequence is beyond my comprehension.

CrotchetyQuaver · 13/01/2022 10:05

I think I'd be very tempted to go to vote and spoil my ballot paper.

Time for a new leader of the conservatives, not sure Starmers ready/able to be PM, plus the modern Labour Party seems very metropolitan these days and I'm definitely rural.

Would not even consider voting for Lib Dems, even tactically.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 13/01/2022 10:06

BTW Tory bots aren’t worth worrying about - they would vote for a turd with a blue rosette.
Everything in this country revolves around a tiny number of seats that have a chance of changing colour.

FinallyHere · 13/01/2022 10:10

It's very early days, as I have only just watched the launch but I am daring to hope that there may be an alternative available

https://trueandfairparty.uk

Having a party which not only claimed to be 'true & fair' but actually lived those values would be a very welcome new step for me.

UsernameInTheTown · 13/01/2022 10:10

As all other parties are pro self ID, sadly I'd have to vote Tory.

NiceShrubbery · 13/01/2022 10:10

Sabire9 But that's exactly what happens already!! The vote is split, there's tactical voting all over the place. Websites were set up so people could swap their votes, it was bizarre.

People are trying to get themselves heard within a broken system. A lot voted Boris out of rage last time. And look at what we have!

Either way there will be chaos, but there's temporary chaos like having the builders in because you're restructuring and making safe, or there's the permanent potentially explosive abd toxic chaos that comes from living in a structurally unsafe building and refusing to take out the dodgy wiring and living on top of a crumbling sewer.

Give me the temporary chaos any day. "Build back better" yes but with Boris, Keir and FPTP consigned to history.

There's a lot of political illiteracy in the U.K.

A lot of them voted for Boris Johnson and the Tories out of rage at the government? The, err, Tories?
Sabire9 · 13/01/2022 10:25

I'm all for tactical voting.

Get the Tories out. Where ever, however.

Then change the voting system so they never get back in again with a majority.

I live in a safe labour seat so I can vote Labour. If I didn't I'd vote for whoever would unseat the Tory (except UKIP or other nationalist party).

caringcarer · 13/01/2022 10:27

Conservatives. I always do as don't trust Labour with economy. Rishi Sunak gave away far too much during first lockdown but Labour were saying 80 percent furlough was not enough and wanted it never to end. We need to get economy moving again to stave off high inflation.
