How often should I shower?

Ok so I'm having a few drinks with friends last night. We are all female a mix of parents and non parents. One friend mentions she is struggling to find time for o shower every day since she had her baby. I said "well I don't shower every day without a young baby," All of my friends looked at me in horror. Apparently even the ones with kids shower daily. Full disclosure I have two dd one under five and I work part time. I shower on work days plus one extra day so usually three times a week my days off usually consist of playing at home, walking dog, school run and maybe park. I would shower extra if exercising/having sex/on period etc. I bath my dc three times a week. My oh works out every week day so he does shower more than me. AIBD? (Disgusting 😂)

I have a newborn and toddler and shower daily. Think it’s really grim not to!
I wouldn’t go near dh if he didn’t shower daily either 🤢

WindInTheWillows7 · 12/01/2022 11:16

Showering every day is, in my opinion, pretty wasteful and unnecessary, especially when you don't live in a warm country. Shower when you actually need one. I shower 2-3 times a week and I'm not dirty or stinky - people actually often comment on how nice I smell! If you wash your hair too frequently it also gets greasier much quicker.

AllThePogs · 12/01/2022 11:16

I think different people smell less or more. Until the menopause DP always used to marvel at how my armpits never smelled, even after sport. Menopause changed that.
My elderly parents shower every day, but really don't need to. They don't go anywhere and only go a gentle daily walk around the block. They would not smell if they showered less.
Some men smell very easily. I have worked with men who can start smelling after an active day at work even though they have showered in the morning.
Rules about how often you shower are good for young people who don't know this information. But really daily is a must for some people and not for others.

Bollindger · 12/01/2022 11:16

You do you.
So funny how complete strangers are trying to tell you what you should do.

HacerSonarSusPasos · 12/01/2022 11:17

I'm in and out of the shower in 5 minutes (10 if i wash my hair too). I don't see a good reason not to do it daily (except skin conditions). I start to feel unconfortable after 24h unshowered, although I don't stink.

Not showering more days than not feels a little grim to me.

No excuse to be showering 3x a week if you have the time. I remember when dc was a newborn and I still found the time to have a shower everyday, despite it being so difficult to do so.

StillWalking · 12/01/2022 11:17

I shower daily, usually in the evenings, because I look after horses during the day and I prefer to not sit about/have dinner etc in the evening smelling of a dung heap!! Even without the horses, I would shower daily ... pretty grim not to do so IMO.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 12/01/2022 11:17

If I don’t have a shower on any day then it’s a sign that my mental health is slipping. But that’s me. Others’ normal is different.

If you’re happy, and don’t smell or feel dirty then carry on as you are.

Lunificent · 12/01/2022 11:19

It depends what you’re doing in between and how smelly you get. I think, if you don’t smell, every other day is fine.

TulipVictory · 12/01/2022 11:20

Everyday !!! Eww bet you have smelly pants 🤢🤣

FawnFrenchieMum · 12/01/2022 11:20

I don’t shower every day, probably every other unless exercising. I wash my pits with soap every day, use deodorant and change my clothes.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 12/01/2022 11:21

Every day. And when I had tiny ones to look after at the same time, they either played on the bathroom floor or came into the shower with me.

It takes 2 minutes to wet your skin, lather up and rinse. Bizarre that you "don't have time" for a basic routine.

ItchySnoof · 12/01/2022 11:21

3 times a week here. Incredibly dry skin and hair (hair only gets done once a week - anymore and its awful). I DO wash my bits and pits in between though and I use Driclor which stops localised sweating (you have to apply it every day initially, then once a week-ish after)

How do you dry your hair in 10 mins?
Gonnagetgoing · 12/01/2022 11:21

You should really shower every day unless sick.

Or do a pits and bits (including face) strip wash at the sink.

Or even a bath if you prefer that.

CounsellorTroi · 12/01/2022 11:22

I shower nearly every day but don’t really think I need to, it’s just habit. The other day I shaved my pits in the shower. Decided not to put deodorant on afterwards as I knew it would sting and make my pits sore. The following morning my pits didn’t smell at all! I’m not a very sweaty person, especially this time of year.

ants are smelly after missing one day of showering I think you might have bigger problems. Like not wiping properly or an infection.
GrendelsGrandma · 12/01/2022 11:22

I don't see how it's grim not to shower every day. It's just habit, and the body responds to washing with detergent (soap, shower gel etc) by making oil to replace the oil that is removed, so the more you wash the more greasy you will be.

I do shower every day, partly to have 5 mins away from my DC tbh! If I didn't shower every day, the odd spot wash of bits and pits would do the job. No one has dirty arms and legs after a day sitting at a desk, really!

DC (5 and 2) have a bath twice a week and we don't use soap or shampoo on them, just water. They're clean and don't smell.

I don't like the attitude that the body is some filthy thing that needs to be scrubbed. If you're in tune with your own body then you can tell when it needs a bit of a wash, and it's unlikely to be every 24 hours on the dot.

ItchySnoof · 12/01/2022 11:22

If your pants are smelly*

HacerSonarSusPasos · 12/01/2022 11:24

@fawnfrenchiemum i have thin straight shoulder length hair which i don't bother to style. Takes me 5-7 minutes to blowdry it

JaffaCakeGal · 12/01/2022 11:24

I'm with you OP. I don't get up and shower every morning. Why would I if I've exercised and showered the night before? My skin dries out if I shower too much. And if I shower in the morning it puts me off wanting to exercise that night as I hate having 2 showers in one day!

Grantanow · 12/01/2022 11:25

When I was a child once a week in the bath was the norm in my family and a wash at the basin otherwise. Have we all gone shower mad? And what about the skin's natural oils?

Mooserp · 12/01/2022 11:26

The outrage at people not showering every day!

I didn't have a home with a proper shower for the first 29 years of my life and that wasn't unusual.

It's a lot of water and a lot of heating for a household to shower every day and probably not the best thing for skin.
It's not essential and not weird if people don't do it.

TheHairyDinosaur · 12/01/2022 11:26

DC has one dettol bath a week on a Sunday 😳 he then has a wash every morning with a flannel.amd brush teeth. But obviously if he's done a activity which makes him sweaty he will bath afterwards. He's 7. He has clean uniform every day and clean clothes every day.

I shower after excersice classes twice a week, a Sunday night, basically works out every other day. But again I have a wash every morning with a flannel in the sink.

Clean flannels every day, clean clothes every day and good old fashioned soap not shower gel. We do not smell as a family.

I'm not paying the gas/water prices for 2 showers a day! I'm not made of money. 😂

BashfulClam · 12/01/2022 11:26

I’m an ever morning person. Do you wash in between as I think pits and bits need a daily wash and it quicker and more comfortable to jump in the shower than wash over the sink.
