How often should I shower?

Ok so I'm having a few drinks with friends last night. We are all female a mix of parents and non parents. One friend mentions she is struggling to find time for o shower every day since she had her baby. I said "well I don't shower every day without a young baby," All of my friends looked at me in horror. Apparently even the ones with kids shower daily. Full disclosure I have two dd one under five and I work part time. I shower on work days plus one extra day so usually three times a week my days off usually consist of playing at home, walking dog, school run and maybe park. I would shower extra if exercising/having sex/on period etc. I bath my dc three times a week. My oh works out every week day so he does shower more than me. AIBD? (Disgusting 😂)

I have no idea where people are living that they say it is too cold to have a shower and take all your clothes off !

PurpleRainlnTheSky · 13/01/2022 00:47

@Lifeisnteasy

Anyway I shower most days, but wash hair every other day - the days in between I use the shower head to wash my body. If I’m slobbing around the house all day or in a massive rush I will just have a quick flannel wash under the armpits in the sink. Clean underwear & top every day.

I laugh when I see people say they shower once a week but definitely don’t smell. They’re clearly nose blind.

Yeah this. No-one can go a week without a shower and not stink.

It’s 11 degrees C in my bathroom at the moment. My minimum requirement for showering is 13 Grin (It used to be 15, but I had to lower my standards…) I live in a badly insulated house in urban Berkshire.

I know right. It's rubbish isn't it?

How many times do you need it explained to you that people can keep clean without using a shower?

AllThePogs · 13/01/2022 00:55

I am amazed that anyone would not realise that some people are struggling to afford to heat their house. Of course some people have very cold bathrooms.

PurpleRainlnTheSky · 13/01/2022 00:56

Bloody hell @PattyPan where are you? The far reaches of Northern Canada?

PattyPan · 13/01/2022 01:01

@PurpleRainlnTheSky In fact I am in a very built up part of a large town in SE England. The weather outside is currently 1 degree and a bit misty. My bathroom is in an extension stuck on the back of my house apparently without any insulation in the walls or floor (we have added flat roof insulation but it hasn’t made much of a difference). Wanted to get wall insulation from that government scheme but they made it impossible and then scrapped it 🙄

Sorry to hear that.

Oh am I a sock puppet as I agree with All and have almost no posting history with this name? Fear not, I’ve been here since 2006.
There's no sock puppets, just people who don’t like your attitude.

AuntTwacky · 13/01/2022 01:27

There is no need to shower every day unless you are part of the MN shower mafia....

AuntTwacky · 13/01/2022 01:28

What about saving water???

Erm ... yes I think shower at least once a day. I usually shower morning or lunchtime and have a bath at night.

HoseMeDownWithHolyWater · 13/01/2022 05:51

Shower daily. Even managed a shower the day after a caesarean. Not showering every day feels grim to me.

UserError012345 · 13/01/2022 06:24

I shower every day. Always.

ILiveAtNo10 · 13/01/2022 06:42

Not every day here, if I haven't exerted myself I don't feel it is always necessary.

HacerSonarSusPasos · 13/01/2022 06:57

@ayegazumba

I thought everyone showered everyday. People saying it's normal not to is news to me and a bit gross to be honest. How often do you brush your teeth??
I think your question deserves its own thread! Grin
CounsellorTroi · 13/01/2022 07:22

@Copasetic

I shower every day. I don't know how long it would take for me to smell (I don't really sweat) but I usually shower every other day. In the 70s and 80s weekly/bi weekly bathing was the norm. Have people's noses become more sensitive?
Most people still washed every day in the 70s-80s even if they didn’t bathe. And anti perspirants have been around in their modern form since the 1940s.
countrygirl99 · 13/01/2022 07:29

Personally I going anyone who only showers once a day is utterly grim. I shower 3 times a day and get up during the night and shower to make sure I stay fresh.....
Nah, your fine.

FruitMelange · 13/01/2022 08:35

How often do you brush your teeth??

Completely different question. There's only one way to clean your teeth. More than one way to clean your body. The question was just a veiled insult anyway.

One might argue there are people out there who consider swishing mouthwash around for a few seconds enough to replace brushing.

I also think brushing is comparable with showering. They are personal hygene staples.
