How often should I shower?

Ok so I'm having a few drinks with friends last night. We are all female a mix of parents and non parents. One friend mentions she is struggling to find time for o shower every day since she had her baby. I said "well I don't shower every day without a young baby," All of my friends looked at me in horror. Apparently even the ones with kids shower daily. Full disclosure I have two dd one under five and I work part time. I shower on work days plus one extra day so usually three times a week my days off usually consist of playing at home, walking dog, school run and maybe park. I would shower extra if exercising/having sex/on period etc. I bath my dc three times a week. My oh works out every week day so he does shower more than me. AIBD? (Disgusting 😂)

It’s ‘lady doth protest too much’ all over again. You don’t care. It’s honestly nothing to you. You’re amused.

It’s all a desperate attempt to prove lord knows what.[/quote]
Well, primarily I'm bored...this meeting is a bloody killer. But yeah, saying we refuse to wash for complex socio-political reasons, or doing the classic Mumsnet "Well, my extensive life experience and serious observation of this matter has proven that people who mention being clean on a thread about showers ARE ALL PROVING ME RIGHT IN WHATEVER" is kind of funny.

Seriously, don't stop. This meeting is a killer.

Arabellla · 12/01/2022 21:20

You don’t sound amused though @DrSbaitso. You sound curiously angry and defensive, hence your made up quotes of things I didn’t say.

You’re trying desperately hard to sound amused but no dice.

Oh thank fuck, the meeting is finally over. I could have flown to France in the time that took. This is what I get for doing voluntary work.

Thanks to all who made it slightly more bearable, in whatever way. I think I'll have a nice hot shower and go to bed early.

Because we all know that’s totally normal and not weird catch up conversation. Might also ask if they make sure to wash their bums after a poo because we all know that’s a normal topic of conversation and not one that would have all your friends making a separate WhatsApp group to decide how to phase you out of their lives.

🤮🤮🤮 I've got 4 children, the youngest 2 are 2 and 9 months. I shower every day.
You can have a shower in less than 5 minutes.

@PurpleRainlnTheSky

Wow, you are really angry 😂

You implied that disabled people smell and @AllThingsServeTheBeam rightfully called you up on it and you were deleted for it,

The only one who should be embarrassed is you.

And I didn’t report your comment, but I’m glad it was deleted, because it was vile.

I shower almost everyday. The odd day missed doesn't matter (as long as I am not sweaty ) having said that I live in a hot country and in the summer I do shower a couple of times a day

Idontknowlondon · 12/01/2022 21:37

IamGusFring I am aware of that. But we use wet wipes in the bathroom and change underwear daily. I don't smell. DH has to shower daily, he's got the smelly gene.

Do you mean you do, or that you would if you did those things but you don't?

If it's that you do shower more because you do those things, then there can't be many weeks when you only shower a couple of times.

Kanaloa · 12/01/2022 21:40

@AllThingsServeTheBeam

I’m sorry this thread has upset you - I have been very careful to ensure that I am specifically referring to the op or other posters.

However I do think you’re trying to pick holes in random responses. Nobody has said ‘oh disabled people are minging not even having a shower.’ People are obviously aware that if you’re not able to shower you do the best you can to wash up insofar as you can. Nobody is out to attack that, people are just responding to the op’s (tbh troll) question of how often should SHE shower, and she says the reason she doesn’t is that she doesn’t have time.

Your repeated attacks of fairly innocuous posts make it seem like you’re trying really hard to make people look ableist when obviously people aren’t referring to those who can’t shower.

Toughtips · 12/01/2022 21:41

I've not showered since Sunday.

Kanaloa · 12/01/2022 21:42

And it seems like quite a few people are getting really heated at the suggestion that anyone showers daily, when in fact it’s a pretty accepted social norm to do so. Most of us were simply replying to the odd idea that it’s somehow easier to wash yourself over the sink than to get in the shower, when for most people a sink wash would be considerably less comfortable and harder to get clean.

Look, I don't understand what people aren't getting here. How can it be grim, disgusting, smelly etc for an able bodied person not to shower every day, but because I've got mobility issues it's ok? Am I not smelly or grim just because I've got arthritis, but my DP is because he hasn't?

VanGoghsDog · 12/01/2022 21:43

Er.....well although it wasn't me that posted this, I'd just let me to point out your faulty logic.

I'm a single woman of menopause age. Last period July last year. I have had sex once in the past two years. The only exercise I do is swimming so I shower those days anyway and skip showering on the non swimming days mostly.

So it doesn't follow that if someone exercises, has sex or has their period they would shower more automatically means they do shower more because they must do those things. I'll think you'll find plenty of us don't!

Arabellla · 12/01/2022 21:47

You’ve got that the wrong way round. It’s people who claim to shower daily being offensive to those who say they don’t.

So much gaslighting.

Trekkerbabe · 12/01/2022 21:47

As often as you need or want. There are no rules and no norms despite what I've read on here. Daily works for some. Less often for others.

I lived in Nepal for two years in the 90s where we had no running water and a hole in the ground for a toilet. I washed at a public village tap once a week. Cold water of course.

Did I smell? No. My body got used to it and I realised how habits change depending on need and circumstance. Yes I was filthy and dusty but so was everyone else. I quite liked not caring.

These days i sometimes wash daily eg when I have my period or exercise and sweat. Sometimes I wash a lot less often. It works for me and my body.

Kanaloa · 12/01/2022 21:55

Gaslighting Confused

In my first post I literally said I shower daily but the only part of op I found odd was the suggestion that it’s normal to sit round at lunch and have a good chinwag about how often you all shower. Other than that it’s horses for courses.

And yet the thread is chock full of people insisting that showering daily is abnormal/environmentally wrong/privileged behaviour.

Of course there’s the occasional ‘yuck I bleach myself down once an hour you’re a minger’ but it’s mumsnet and that’s expected.
