To ask what you’re doing awake post-midnight?

I had a day that just really banged me about, physically, emotionally, just all the ways, and now, I’m laying here awake and staring at the ceiling.

So why are you awake? Crying baby? Can’t stop thinking? Worried about something tomorrow? Pain somewhere in your body being an arsehole?

Welcome?

@Wagsandclaws Well, there's nothing I love more than seeing some smooth furry criminals. Ha! I can only imagine Ponies Unleashed, like some latest adventure film starring Jason Statham or something. Perhaps you can get him to film at your house. Ehhh? Ehhhhh?

And makes perfect sense about stabling. While I know almost nothing about horses (except that their huge size makes me slightly nervous since I was bitten when I was wee), leaving animals to just be comfortable in their native temperatures makes perfect sense to me.

It is absolutely ridiculous that we get less snow than ANYWHERE in Switzerland. We're in the basin of Geneva, so even five miles away, you'd get lots more snow. But within the city of Geneva itself, it's like heat rises from the streets, so snow, when it does manage to fall, just never, ever sticks. When I took a few pictures of snow in the morning, it was already melting by 8am, and completely gone by 11am. Lapland sounds absolutely INCREDIBLE, though I'm not sure I could withstand those temperatures.

Yes, I'm SO excited. I've never made a real attempt to attend and I finally have the camera of my dreams and I'm going to get there and photograph all the exhibits, since I have several days, so I can rest and don't have to do it all at once. It's evenements.geneve.ch/genevalux-oeuvres/ (the button to change from French to English is in the top left).

Ah, about those dodgy American antihistamines... well, if they're Benadryl. Check the ingredients. If it's diphenhydramine, don't worry about it. They use it EVERYWHERE. Over here in Switzerland, there's a sleep medication that's just diphenhydramine. Or a cough medication and the "night cough" pills are codeine and diphenhydramine. But the American joke is always that if you take Benadryl, you won't know you have any allergies, beause you'll be completely knocked out for 24 hours.

And yes... the Internet is definitely a problem at night. Ha.

Just saw the photos! That first one with the brown and white dogs - I have never seen a more smug looking dog in my life than the one on the left. That's hilarious! And the light brown dog in the second photo - look at that precious face. Obviously he's never done ANYTHING wrong ever, including batshittery like howling at the moon at 3am. And I love the free range horse just wondering about! I know we have free-range eggs, but I guess that's how you get free-range horse shoes for games of horse shoes, har har.

Baby just went through a sleep regression so I automatically woke up x

5YearsLeft · 14/01/2022 03:07

@georgarina Not the dreaded sleep regression! It sounds like it's over, but I'm sorry that it appears to have messed up your sleep schedule now! Hopefully you can get back to sleep.

40+4 pregnant.. uncomfortable as hell and insomnia is a bitch!

5YearsLeft · 14/01/2022 03:26

@Heymumma29 Oh wow! I don't even know how you're able to turn! I'm sure it's incredibly uncomfortable and while yes, it's nice to know your baby will be here soon, no amount of people telling you that makes it less uncomfortable or helps you get to sleep, I'm sure. Normally I tell people to to try a cup of warm tea, but if you do that, you'll probably be in the WC 4x an hour until dawn. I suppose the best you can hope is that the baby will be here soon! We've already had one baby born on this thread (Congrats again @Queenie6655) and one or two people in labor (maybe @WeasilyPleased) so hopefully that'll be you soon.

Thank you! I had a sweep yesterday so probably explains the discomfort after being finger blasted by the midwife 😂 hopefully won’t be much longer!

Fingers crossed you get some rest soon too! X

5YearsLeft · 14/01/2022 03:38

"Fingerblasted by the midwife." Now that's something you just don't hear very often as a lyric on Top of the Pops. Grin That said, I'm sure it was QUITE uncomfortable, and hopefully, yes, it will be some rest, and then your turn for a baby to come soon!

Pregnancy insomnia is a bitch tonight! I'm 24+5 and I just can't seem to sleep at all!

Keladrythesaviour · 14/01/2022 03:46

I was fast sleep then DH rolled over in bed and went "HUH!?"really loudly in my ear. Woke up in a panic, he's snoring away and after calming myself down, toilet trip etc my mind is now racing with the day's ephemera. Yay.

5YearsLeft · 14/01/2022 03:59

@TheStickMan I'm sorry to hear that! There are so many on here suffering from it, anywhere from in the 20 week ranges (due to acid burning) all the way up to 40+4. It seems as if in addition to stealing all your energy and your vitamins, babies may be stealing all your sleep while inside your womb. I hope you're able to get at least a few hours of rest! I shared some Native American flute music a few pages back ( ) and someone else has recommended Alexa rain sounds if you have an Alexa (though that could cause even more pregnancy bathroom trips! Eeek!). Good luck!

@Keladrythesaviour Oh for crying out loud. I hope you gave him the elbow of doom for that one. Well, no probably not, as it probably wasn't his fault, but honestly, that's just ridiculous of him. And of course, now he's deep in dreamland, and you're awake with your mind filled with yesterday and already moving into today. I don't know if you have headphones and want to try the music I've recommended for the above poster, or you do better with classical music and such. Or when I'm in that position, I give myself 15-ish (I try not to stare at the clock) minutes of thinking and staring at the ceiling, and if I'm still not asleep or feeling on my way there, I give up, get up, get some tea, read a book for a bit, and then try again when I feel I can. Good luck with that!

I'm awake feeding my baby, he slept for 5 straight hours before waking which is as good as it gets for him (other than that one magical night he slept for 6 hours) so I'm very happy.

5YearsLeft · 14/01/2022 04:29

@shivawn That's lovely. I'm so glad to hear that he (and you) got such a long stretch of sleep, and I hope that you get many more stretches like that.

Very early days pregnant and can't stop peeing 🙄

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 14/01/2022 05:07

Been awake since 2am thanks to the steroids they give me at chemotherapy. Can guarantee I’ll drift back off at around 6.15, as my alarm is due to go off at 6.45 to get my youngest up and off to school!

5YearsLeft · 14/01/2022 05:33

@USaYwHatNow That's not a fun time, I'm sure. You have my sympathy! Hopefully you can get some rest soon, and find the right time to stop drinking caffeine in the afternoon (if you do) and stop drinking anything before bed, so that hopefully you can sleep a little more soundly. But I suspect it will still happen somewhat, and get worse before it gets better for, oh, about 40 weeks.

@TwoBigNoisyBoys Sigh. Steroids are absolutely the worst for that. I was up for days and days on end while on them. I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing that and worse yet, the dreaded "drifting off into the sweet, sleepy arms of BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP." It's so damn annoying. I hope maybe you can get some sleep during the day? Steroids plus chemotherapy are really hard on a body, so you definitely deserve some TLC.

Woke up with a start at 4 am because a wolf was eating my face!

Have been too wired to go back to sleep ever since. Second time it's happened this week (last night it was whales). A psychotherapist would have a field day.

TheCatShatInTheHat · 14/01/2022 05:52

Been awake since 3am. It will be an early night for me tonight !

5YearsLeft · 14/01/2022 05:52

@SallyMcNally Oh no! That sounds absolutely traumatic. Honestly, I see a psychotherapist and he couldn't be less interested in my dreams. The only time he was interested was when my dreams started to mirror my real life (like I started to dream that I was doing things like going to the chemist and eating breakfast and then I'd wake up unsure what was real), because apparently that can be a sign that you're extremely exhausted and not getting quality sleep. It could even just be that for some reason you feel something brushing against your face at night. It could be your own hand! Who knows. But I also have that happen, where I have an unpleasant dream, and then I need to turn the light on and read a cozy book or have a cup of tea until I feel less wired. I don't know if those things would help you? Good luck! And I hope sleep will find you again. Still another hour or two until the sun joins us.

5YearsLeft · 14/01/2022 05:53

@TheCatShatInTheHat Sometimes it just works like that. Something kicks off at 2, 3, 4am that gets you awake, and then all you can do is hope for an early night the next night. So all fingers crossed that you'll get it!

I have Covid and my gums hurt 😭 never knew this was a side effect. The fever, cough etc are controllable but this is a fresh hell.

I haven’t slept until the early hours since Tuesday.

Thankfully work are sympathetic.

5YearsLeft · 14/01/2022 06:45

@Squeezita I'm so sorry! I admit, even I haven't heard about that symptom, but I've had gum pain. People will recommend all sorts, but in my opinion, nothing is as effective as the Orajel numbing stuff, if you can find it at the chemist. I know it's mostly used for tooth aches, but I also used it when I had a gum infection. You can buy it online from Boots, Asda, Amazon, etc. You want the one made with benzocaine. Here it is at Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk/Orajel-2760239-Dental-Gel/dp/B001E1E9D8?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Thanks @5YearsLeft it is indeed a bugger! However, I was good and decided to do my daily mindfulness and the two ring asked me to reframe something thats challenging me…so I rather than stay in bed, I got up and did half an hour gentle pedalling on my exercise bike and 50 squats 😄 may as well make the most of the steroid high!! 🙄😄

Squeezita · 14/01/2022 06:57

Aww thanks, OP 😊

I’ll ask someone to pick me some up today.

Just reading the thread, and I’m awed by your messages to everyone. Have you also been up every night?

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 14/01/2022 07:01

The recording, not the two ring!! Wish MN had an edit button! 🙄
