AIBU to think that Boris should resign now?

994 replies

Seemslikeagoodidea · 11/01/2022 17:45

Today it has been revealed that in May 2020 invitations were emailed to (allegedly) 100 Downing Street staff, for a garden party. This party happened during the first lockdown, when many people could not visit their elderly relatives, even on their death beds, due to the lockdown rules. The email was sent by one of the PM's top people, and stated that people should "bring their own booze and enjoy the sunshine". Today Boris has been conspicuous by his absence.

I think this is the final straw and shows a lack of judgement and absence of moral fibre. Enough is enough - he should resign and if he doesn't do it then his own party should force him to go.

AIBU?

His cup is £180.

Remember that thread where it was said MC Mumsnetters who talk a lot about Boden know nothing of what it is like to be poor. Well what about Rishi then? I don't actually know anyone IRL with a £180 coffee cup that is linked to an app to track your caffeine intake!

minny80 · 11/01/2022 23:20

YANBU but he is shameless and he won't resign, unless the party kicks him out

sst1234 · 11/01/2022 23:23

@Elodie9

I don't honestly understand why anyone could vote for any tory now.
Because they are still not labour.
Tealightsandd · 11/01/2022 23:27

Convenient timing these party leaks... just when the 'low' stable number of people killed by Covid rises to nearly 400 in one day.

They want the economy running. So do we all.

So why no push for simple easy infection control mitigations?

Masks, vaccine passes, good ventilation.

HEPA filters or DIY corsi-rosenthal boxes in schools, hospitals, offices, etc.

Peregrina · 11/01/2022 23:31

The authors include Elizabeth Truss and Dominic Raab, both tipped to be promoted in a future reshuffle.

Since they are both British, I assume they speak from first hand experience.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/01/2022 23:41

I've a suspicion that BJ (!) will just hide behind the inquiry by Susan Grey and say that he cannot answer the question

He already is doing - or in other words avoiding questions until the news has moved onto something else, secure in the knowledge that a civil servant can never be "independent" enough to run an enquiry

It was despicable but also rather interesting to see that none of the front bench and most of the back bench if Tories didn't turn up to the House of Commons today

Probably all at another party ...

onlychildhamster · 11/01/2022 23:42

@Peregrina ok but I wouldn't have thought that most british people agree that they are the world's worst idlers...

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 11/01/2022 23:45

Dunno why Johnson is staying on - is he hoping Argentina will have another go at the Falklands?

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 11/01/2022 23:46
@Peregrina ok but I wouldn't have thought that most british people agree that they are the world's worst idlers...
Indeed and it’s a bit fucking rich coming from Raab.

Feelingoktoday · 11/01/2022 23:53

@ParsleySageRosemary

^this.

Here's Rishi Sunak's wikipedia entry, covering his family and personal background. If we think Boris Johnson is unrepresentative and remote from ordinary people, Rishi Sunak is far far worse. How can an intercontinental jetsetter, child and grandchild of intercontinental jetsetters, ever begin to comprehend the plight and interests of miners' grandchildren in Wigan, Newcastle and Mansfield? There's no way he can be considered a fit prime minister for the ordinary British people.

He is supposedly richer than the Queen. He has absolutely no idea of poverty, turning the heat down, feeding the kids a meal but toast for yourself, damp, debt, poor education etc.
MagpiesStoleMyTreasure · 12/01/2022 00:02

Rishi seems a reasonable choice, given the lack of strong candidates for the job. I know very little about him, but he seems quite bright and has probably worked very hard to get where he is.

Lol!!!! He is a billionnaire. 🙄🤣

Smorgasborb · 12/01/2022 00:23

@codexa

He is relying on the tut tutting and rage of a few, and the inertia/stupidity of the majority.
This. Tory supporters will say 'oh he's very naughty Hahahah' The vast majority won't even hear about this (very few people now have any kind of exposure to the news) , probably won't care and certainly won't remember it at the next election. It will just be 'oh Boris... he's funny isn't he and he's on the telly and I've never heard of the other person' ✅

Why is he continuing to laugh in our faces? This butthole thinks it's funny he was having these parties while all (well most) of the country was obeying the rules HE set and suffering so much, being split from loved ones when they needed us most, etc.

HeadPain · 12/01/2022 02:35

"He's a national embarrassment."

Booklover3 · 12/01/2022 02:41

I can’t watch him smirk at us anymore… day by day I flippantly wonder what life would have been like if Guy Fawks had got his way!

Sort0f · 12/01/2022 02:46

YANBU
The Conservatives would be unreasonable about it and just install another leader rather than go to the polls.

Booklover3 · 12/01/2022 02:54

It’s terrible… they shouldn’t be able to install another leader without another general election.
Peregrina · 12/01/2022 06:01

Indeed and it’s a bit fucking rich coming from Raab.

That was exactly what I meant(about Britons who are idlers)* although posted too soon, and missed a bit out!
*Another prime example being the Prime Minister, who the Tory MPs and Party chose to elect as Leader.

Millionairesshortbreadshort · 12/01/2022 07:25

onlychildhamster

If Rishi becomes PM, we will get more allegra stratton as they are great pals. But I would rather him than Liz Truss. Liz Truss once wrote that British workers are the world's worst idlers.

I am not sure she is the best person to lead the british people if she thinks they are idlers.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-19300051

The UK "rewards laziness", does not encourage risk-taking and must strive to emulate the work ethic and low-tax culture in parts of Asia, the five MPs argue in a book due out next month.

The authors include Elizabeth Truss and Dominic Raab, both tipped to be promoted in a future reshuffle.

"Too many people in Britain prefer a lie-in to hard work," they argue.

btw i am from the part of Asia that they admire. My mum worked till 11 pm every night when I was a child (she was in a corporate job and not given much of a choice, there were no non government controlled unions either).

It just gets worse and worse. Thanks for posting this. I had no idea.

It makes me so angry. I know families where both parents work long shifts. Tag teaming. Never have family time together. Very little holiday. Still only just keeping their heads above water. Not managing to save. Working themselves into poor health later in life with no pension.

I feel so angry about this on their behalf.

All MPs, as part of an induction should have to live like the most deprived and underprivileged section of the community they serve for a month.

MyNameIsArthur · 12/01/2022 07:29

I agree but who would take over from him if all his ministers were at the party too? 🤔

rosie1959 · 12/01/2022 07:39

@Sort0f

YANBU The Conservatives would be unreasonable about it and just install another leader rather than go to the polls.
That's not the way it works remember Brown taking over from Blair The choice of PM is not down to anybody but members of the Conservative party
merrymouse · 12/01/2022 07:44

"Too many people in Britain prefer a lie-in to hard work," they argue.”

Raab in particular should be rather more concerned about the number of people in his immediate vicinity who drink at their desks and treat coming to work like going to a party.

I think that was his explanation for what happened on 15th May.

LakieLady · 12/01/2022 07:46

@User135644

Why? .You get what you vote for. What exactly did people think they were getting when they voted for the charlatan?

People in England have Stockholm Syndrome for the Tories

I think of England's relationship with the Tories as more like an abusive relationship. They want it to stop, but are scared to leave.

And it is mostly English voters that keep them in power, the other 3 nations have a much smaller proportion of Tory voters.

I don't blame the Scots and Welsh for wanting independence, at least they'd then be able to have the govts they voted for, not what the English inflict upon them.

Alexandra2001 · 12/01/2022 07:50

Sue Gray wont find BJ guilty, she ll word her findings in a way that gives him a way out.... like Lord Geidt did over the flat redecoration.

So he'll reside over the rises in electricity, tax & the NHS waiting lists, if he makes it to the Autumn, i think he 'll stay for the next GE....

IF he is replaced, i think it will be from outside the Cabinet.

Gingerbreadrules · 12/01/2022 07:53

@llanwrst2

I'd prefer an arrest and criminal charges, but resignation would be a step forward. The next Tory leader will at least do the job full time and might treat women better than the misogynist.
I'd prefer him arrested too but we know that won't happen.

The problem is I can't envisage any Tory politician who might take over from him doing a better job. Look at his predecessors - all shit PMs who handed the poisoned chalice over to someone else when things started getting tricky.
