@Floralnomad

Depends how old you are , I’m in my 50s so I’ve heard of him .
55 and I never have
hulahooper2 · 12/01/2022 23:18

You dont know what you don’t know Smile

CheeseMmmm · 12/01/2022 23:22

Botham as well? Same level of heard of him and roughly why as Ray??

I mean I loved my snooker and watched back then. There is no disrespect here but no he's not still as well known as Botham!!!!

Botham described wiki 'Hailed as one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of the game'. Other things say as well.
Commentating cricket after retired cricket.
Made a lord last year.
'23 August 2021, Boris Johnson appointed him the UK's Trade Envoy to Australia'

And most importantly I've seen him on the TV more than once recently starring in a foot spa advert Grin

CheeseMmmm · 12/01/2022 23:23

@LakieLady

Pot Black. BBC2. Jumpers for goalposts

"And for those of you watching in black and white, the pink is behind the yellow."

Black and white snooker 😁😁😁

Those were the days!

Aaah, happy days!

I remember our first colour tv set in the 1970s.

thecatneuterer · 12/01/2022 23:43

When I read the title I thought 'oh yes, I know who he is - he's got that programme on Radio 4'. Then all the references to snooker confused me and it's turns out I was thinking of Ed Reardon:)

And I was in my twenties in the 80s, so no excuse. And I recognised all the other snooker names, just not him for some reason.

CheeseMmmm · 12/01/2022 23:48

He was av good player but I'll check, he wasn't loud, badly behaved or anything which means less interest generally from media, and afaik he's not been visible on TV etc that I've noticed anyway since.

Amazing player, great hair! Assume not interested in TV etc after. And not a chaotic private life.

Which, you know. Sounds aok to me!

CheeseMmmm · 12/01/2022 23:56

Loads on thread said this! You're not alone.

I have never heard of ed Reardon!

Is that offer not to know than ray Reardon? 😃

stinkycheeseman · 12/01/2022 23:56

Geoff Capes? Does anyone remember him? About the same time. DP used to use the same gym. He talks about it regularly

CheeseMmmm · 12/01/2022 23:58

Fuck yeah 100%!

Omg tell your DP wow! That's proper claim to fame!

That name made me think of giant haystacks and big daddy!

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 13/01/2022 05:51

I can remember watching pot black on a black and white portable tv...you really had to concentrate 🤣

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 13/01/2022 05:53

Ooh I loved Kirk Stevens with his white suit 🥰

ErrolTheDragon · 13/01/2022 08:56

I remember our first colour tv set in the 1970s.

So do I - very specifically, DM decided to upgrade the set we had from Radio Rentals for Princess Anne's wedding in 1973.

Justkeeppedaling · 13/01/2022 09:18

Isn't it Pot Black that's famous for the comment "for those of you watching in black and white, the green ball is just behind the blue one"?

*colour recollection may vary

@CheeseMmmm

Gascoigne no way comparable reardon in terms of being person that people in 2022 recognise name/ who they are etc!

How long ago, which sport, and also how much in public eye after not top of game any more.

Gascoigne (Gazza):

Football for England. That sport way bigger here. And he was England player (just checked) 88-98.

He was a tabloid fave and was front page tabloids often for all sorts of things.

His long term personal issues have contained getting widespread attention. Again the tabloids had him front page periodically, last big story 2019.

Stories about-

-severe alcoholism, incidents in public over years, spells in rehab
-domestic violence against his wife which he's admitted
-sectioned multiple times
-long list of arrests/convictions including drink driving, drugs, racial abuse, assaults

 • 2019 wide coverage of prosecution sexual assault woman on train. Quote was a joy for media outlets-
'he was cleared of sexual assault after he called the complainant a "fat lass" and told the court he had only given her a "peck on the lips" to "boost her confidence" and that there was no sexual intention'.

No way is Ray as generally well known as Gazza!

I admit I don't understand the comparison.

I wasn't directly comparing them. As I said at the end of my post, I don't expect who Ray Reardon is to be common knowledge. I was responding to MrsJ above my post and explaining that you can know who somebody is without having watched them do the thing they're known for. I know who he is from the news. Same as Gazza.
@OnceUponAMidnightBeery were you doing a crossword very recently or have I just stumbled into a Ray Reardon related coincidence?!

Don't think about RR for decades, then twice in two days...
Definitely a coincidence, DH was rambling talking about famous people and I was clueless... Weirdness abounds!

Thank you so much everybody! DH is rather bemused so many people have never heard of Ray Reardon, I feel somewhat vindicated less stupid, and I’ve learned a lot about snooker... win win. Thank you!

I asked DP (50) who Ray Reardon was, he was amazed I'd never heard of him and agreed he is a household name 🤔
He also said though if I don't remember Pot Black then it's unlikely a certain age would know him 🤷🏼‍♀️
I know Geoff Capes though.

I mentioned Neil Robertson earlier on this thread and now he's Master's champion again. I feel like I sent a bit of good karma his way.
