I remember our first colour tv set in the 1970s.

When I read the title I thought 'oh yes, I know who he is - he's got that programme on Radio 4'. Then all the references to snooker confused me and it's turns out I was thinking of Ed Reardon:)

And I was in my twenties in the 80s, so no excuse. And I recognised all the other snooker names, just not him for some reason.

He was av good player but I'll check, he wasn't loud, badly behaved or anything which means less interest generally from media, and afaik he's not been visible on TV etc that I've noticed anyway since.

Amazing player, great hair! Assume not interested in TV etc after. And not a chaotic private life.

Which, you know. Sounds aok to me!

He was a tabloid fave and was front page tabloids often for all sorts of things.

His long term personal issues have contained getting widespread attention. Again the tabloids had him front page periodically, last big story 2019.

Stories about-

-severe alcoholism, incidents in public over years, spells in rehab
-domestic violence against his wife which he's admitted
-sectioned multiple times
-long list of arrests/convictions including drink driving, drugs, racial abuse, assaults

I wasn't directly comparing them. As I said at the end of my post, I don't expect who Ray Reardon is to be common knowledge. I was responding to MrsJ above my post and explaining that you can know who somebody is without having watched them do the thing they're known for. I know who he is from the news. Same as Gazza.

Definitely a coincidence, DH was rambling talking about famous people and I was clueless... Weirdness abounds!

Thank you so much everybody! DH is rather bemused so many people have never heard of Ray Reardon, I feel somewhat vindicated less stupid, and I’ve learned a lot about snooker... win win. Thank you!

I asked DP (50) who Ray Reardon was, he was amazed I'd never heard of him and agreed he is a household name 🤔
He also said though if I don't remember Pot Black then it's unlikely a certain age would know him 🤷🏼‍♀️
