DH is appalled, I am clueless!

Help back me up here... or join DH in shaking your head sadly 😂

YABU of course, everybody knows!
YANBU who?

I met Ray Reardon back in the 1980s - he played snooker at our local sports club against the locals. That's my claim to fame. I think I was about 8 years old....

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/01/2022 10:47

I know who he is but I’m 58 and used to watch snooker with my stepdad when I was young.
No reason why you would if you were younger/not a snooker fan.

I have no idea who most “celebs” are now Grin

UnsuitableHat · 11/01/2022 10:49

Well I've heard of him (I'm 51!) but yanbu not to have done, if you've never taken any interest in snooker. LOL at JFK being a 'household name'.

KatherineJaneway · 11/01/2022 11:48

There was so little choice of what to watch on TV when he was playing, I'm surprised people don't know who he is.

Spidey66 · 11/01/2022 11:53

I know him, but I'm a similar age to your husband, though not a snooker fan.

haveyouopenedyourbowelstoday · 11/01/2022 12:00

I used to live in Tredegar. One of the local heroes (although not quite the level of Nye Bevan!).

JudgeJ · 11/01/2022 13:27

I'd never heard of Freddie Mercury before he died! Radio 4 and Queen weren't the great bedfellows. The odd thing is that I have been given a lot of grief because of that and also my lack of knowledge of modern 'culture' yet if I dare comment on their lack of knowledge of things that interest me it's 'snobby', to which I reply is 'Thank you, you're very kind'.
I certainly know who Ray Readon is/was having been brought up watching Pot Black, originally in balck and white.

JudgeJ · 11/01/2022 13:31

@Sausagedogsarethebest

Oh I'm feeling old now. I used to watch the snooker when I was younger and living at home with parents. Ray Reardon was my era, as was Steve Davis, Hurricane Higgins, Cliff Thorburn, John Virgo, Dennis Taylor, Willie Thorne etc. I met Ray once and he was lovely, a real gentleman.

Couldn't tell you who any of today's players are though.

I'm older, I watched Pot Black in black and white, my Dad could distinguish all the colours from their shade of grey! The only modern player I can name is that Trump one, thought it was Donald's brother Jeb!
JudgeJ · 11/01/2022 13:36

I was born in 73 and haven't seen Star Wars, holds absolutely no interest for me

Snap, even the age! The only Star Wars I've seen is in the queue for the ride at Disney, I was whatsapping our grandson to ask who people were. Sci-fi has no interest, I was reluctant to go and see Chariots of Fire, sounded sci-fi to me. Grandson can't believe I've never seen any Marvel films, as well as Star Wars.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 11/01/2022 13:38

I remember him - I'm in my late 40s. The only current snooker player I could name is Trump.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 11/01/2022 14:07

And you Welsh too OP, tsk. I expect you’ll claim you don’t know who Terry Griffiths is either next Grin

HikingforScenery · 11/01/2022 14:08

Never heard of him.
Just read through the thread. I don’t know any snooker players at all so not surprised.

WhistlersandJugglers · 11/01/2022 15:15

I was born in the early 70s and I've never seen a full Star Wars movie but I still often watch the snooker. I find it very relaxing.

WhistlersandJugglers · 11/01/2022 15:23

Snooker cheered me up during Covid because Neil Robertson had the most awesome lockdown hair of all.

limitedperiodonly · 11/01/2022 15:25

You have to be a fan of '70s snooker. Has your husband heard of Les Kellett? You might be able to snooker him with that one.

limitedperiodonly · 11/01/2022 15:27

It's not a snooker question but it is a '70s TV one. I hesitate to use the term sport.

Clue: it's not darts.

He certainly did. What a shame he has decided to revert to straighten and bleach.
ElftonWednesday · 11/01/2022 15:31

I think YANBU given your age. I'm 46 and grew up watching snooker in the 1980s but if you missed that and are a bit younger you may well not know who he is.

ChargingBuck · 11/01/2022 15:54

Never mind Ray OP - challenge DH to tell you who Ed Reardon is, & act incredulous is he draws a blank.

Anyone who hasn't listened to Ed is missing out - www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006r5ck

I should think there's a fair degree of overlap between people who know about both the Reardons.

He has no idea 😂 actually neither did I... Blush I’m busy watching now!

And thank you everyone, really appreciate all your time and feedback and making me feel like slightly less of an idiot

DH is still puzzling over some of your suggestions 😂😂 Thanks MN!

Errol

'It was on BBC1. I had to organise my homework to keep Monday evenings light because it was the best - Ask the Family, Star Trek, Alias Smith and Jones and then swap to BBC2 at 9pm for Call my Bluff.'

Wah???!!!

I'm positive it was on two at 6 because had to switch turn over, clashed with 6pm news?!

Different years? I mean but important but this is like a big childhood memory.

Like switching over for Blake's seven, family gathering, on after question of sport.

Like how I can remember the old QoS theme tune as that meant Blake's 7 on v soon and I'd get really excited!

(Da da da da da wakawakawaka da da da da da wakawakawaka dar dar dar dar de da da da dum... Anyone else remember?!)
