You could watch The Rack Pack - film about 1970/80's snooker stars and their rivalry. Although it's not about Ray Reardon, he does appear. Quite a good film actually.

megletthesecond · 11/01/2022 06:44

I know. But I'm 47. Still love catching the snooker when it's on TV.

FluffyBooBoo · 11/01/2022 06:48

You have made it impossible for me to vote. I know who he is, but I wouldn't expect everyone to know. He was big in his day, though maybe not as famous as eg Alex Higgins or Steve Davis.

Roselilly36 · 11/01/2022 07:00

Yes I remember him.

Crowdfundingforcake · 11/01/2022 07:01

Pot Black, brylcream

KissTheHostGoodbye · 11/01/2022 07:01

YABU

AmberGer · 11/01/2022 07:04

I am a huuuuge snooker fan,
So I obviously know who he is.
I can see why other people don't though.
I'm under 45

Technosaurus · 11/01/2022 07:09

I worked with someone once, she was early 20s in about 2010, who didn't know who George Harrison was!

Yes I know who Ray Reardon is but I'll forgive people not knowing early 80s snooker players. But not knowing a member of the Beatles was and is unforgiveable!

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 11/01/2022 07:09

I'm 44 and I know who he is. But only because the only sports people I know, are all from that era. My dad watched the golf and snooker when I was young.

I know more sportsmen from that era than I do these days.

But that was when there was only one television in the house with limited channels, so you had to watch it, or nothing else.

Nowadays, dh watches all the sports in another room cos I find them so boring and have no interest whatsoever.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/01/2022 07:17

I’ve tried famous show jumpers/eventers etc but he maintains they are niche knowledge not ‘household names’

I'd have said that was similar - leastwise, showjumpers from that same era because Horse of the Year show was another thing lots of people watched in those days because that's what the Beeb was showing. The only one I can remember off the top of my head is Harvey Smith but I think I might recognise other names

ErrolTheDragon · 11/01/2022 07:20

@CheeseMmmm

Mind you I've never seen more than a few mins of Titanic.

Oh oh-

And that era.
Star Trek Kirk Spock bb2 after kids TV finished on bbc1.
If same era as me. How can you know NOTHING about it and don't remember ever seeing it? Kirk Spock names vague awareness but other than that zero.
We only had 4 (3?) channels FFS! I mean how managed to have no idea?!

It was on BBC1. I had to organise my homework to keep Monday evenings light because it was the best - Ask the Family, Star Trek, Alias Smith and Jones and then swap to BBC2 at 9pm for Call my Bluff. Grin

I'll raise you "Big" Bill Werbeniuk.

He would regularly clear two tables. The snooker table and the table next to his chair with multiple pints of lager. 😁

tigger1001 · 11/01/2022 07:23

I recognised the name but had no idea why had to Google. My dad is a big snooker fan and it was on a lot when I was growing up but I found it dull as dishwater

Fatgalslim · 11/01/2022 07:41

@CheeseMmmm

Thing I have totally wtaf-
  • Close friend also born early 70s NEVER SEEN STAR WARS. How? I literally couldn't get to grips with that.
I was born in 73 and haven't seen Star Wars, holds absolutely no interest for me
DrDreReturns · 11/01/2022 07:43

A friend met him outside the crucible. Apparently he was going on about how he was born in Transylvania etc Grin

AlecTrevelyan006 · 11/01/2022 08:09

Ray Reardon is still alive :)

StopStartStop · 11/01/2022 08:28

@AlecTrevelyan006

Ray Reardon is still alive :)
Excellent.

Ray Reardon is a legend.

Next?

Oblomov22 · 11/01/2022 09:13

Snooker.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 11/01/2022 09:18

@thenightsky

I had a crazy teenage crush on Alex Hurricane Higgins 😁
Tony Knowles for me!
DisforDarkChocolate · 11/01/2022 09:20

I wouldn't expect someone your age to know who he was unless you are interested in snooker. He was very good.

dinahsdishes · 11/01/2022 09:24

Massive snooker fan here - the Masters is currently on 🎱

I'm surprised a 40 year old hadn't heard of him - but I grew up in a house watching darts snooker and football and it carried on when I grew up

Georgeskitchen · 11/01/2022 09:36

I remember him and I'm 60. Younger people probably wont

FreshandLively · 11/01/2022 09:50

I saw him play an exhibition match at Pontins once Grin

caringcarer · 11/01/2022 10:14

Glamour snooker player in 1970's. Also famous for looking like Dracula. Not heard about him for many years though.

Sausagedogsarethebest · 11/01/2022 10:16

Oh I'm feeling old now. I used to watch the snooker when I was younger and living at home with parents. Ray Reardon was my era, as was Steve Davis, Hurricane Higgins, Cliff Thorburn, John Virgo, Dennis Taylor, Willie Thorne etc. I met Ray once and he was lovely, a real gentleman.

Couldn't tell you who any of today's players are though.
