Help back me up here... or join DH in shaking your head sadly 😂

I have yes..met him many times..even been to his house!

oviraptor21 · 10/01/2022 23:56

I know who he is but wouldn't surprise me if only 10% do. You'd have to have been watching Pot Black in the 70s most likely, to know.

Gingernaut · 10/01/2022 23:58

He is the inspiration for The Green Baize Vampire.

He sometimes put on Dennis Taylor's glasses for a laugh, but didn't wear glasses as a general rule.

YABU

RonniePickering · 11/01/2022 00:04

I'm 42, I knew the name but would have said old footballer.

TulipsGarden · 11/01/2022 00:05

I'm 40 and have never heard of him. I really liked watching snooker in the 80s/90s too, so he must have been off the scene before the late 80s.

Jouleigh · 11/01/2022 00:08

I thought I had heard of him, was very confident that he is a man on the TV who does stuff with wildlife or gardens. He is very outdoorsy.
I'm less confident now everyone is talking about snooker...

TheHairyDinosaur · 11/01/2022 00:11

I'm early 30's and Welsh and know who Ray Reardon is.

Ex policeman and miner too, not just a snooker player.

I do however really like snooker and have always watched it. 😳

TherapistInATabard · 11/01/2022 00:18

@MissBattleaxe

Snooker player with Dracula's hair.
Exactly what I came on to say 😆
StopStartStop · 11/01/2022 00:19

@thenightsky

I had a crazy teenage crush on Alex Hurricane Higgins 😁
We all did. Some of us weren't teenagers.

I knew immediately who you meant by Ray Reardon, OP.

Helendee · 11/01/2022 00:19

I find my own kids, now all in their 30s seem to not know, or take much interest in famous people from before they were born and I’ve seen it widespread in their friends and peers too. I think it must be the fact that we had two or three tv channels when I was growing up and were familiar with what our parents listened to and watched.

sorryforswearing · 11/01/2022 00:19

I know him from my dad watching Pot Black years ago. I wouldn’t expect younger people to have heard of him unless they have an interest in snooker.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 11/01/2022 00:23

Well at least I’m not the only one!

@TheHairyDinosaur honestly, in my defence we never watched snooker, DF was a football fan... I’m not bad with the Spurs lineup from the 80s though Grin

Ah then I think we can let you off. 😂

Yeah I wouldn't have a clue about footballers. Past or present, unless the really obvious ones like Beckham or Giggs.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/01/2022 00:33

This really is a generational thing - It's those of us who remember the early days of colour TV. Televising Pot Black was the brainchild of David Attenborough, apparently, because it had coloured balls, and helped popularise the game.

Follow up question for your DH, OP - does he know who Winifred Atwell was.
(My DM used to comment approvingly during the Pot Black theme tune)

MaryStuart · 11/01/2022 00:40

@MasterBeth

How old are you? If under… 45, then YANBU.
I’m under 45 and I know who he is!
OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 11/01/2022 00:43

@TheHairyDinosaur see that’s what I was trying to say to DH, he’s convinced Ray Reardon is a household name... I did start laughing when he said ‘a household name... like... like JFK or Marilyn Monroe’ though Grin 😂

The vampire looking snooker player?

ChocolateDeficitDisorder · 11/01/2022 00:44

Remember the young lad...Stephen Hendry?

Yup, 53 in a couple of days.

Is that maybe Ray Mears @Jouleigh?
GreenClock · 11/01/2022 00:56

My OH and I were talking the other day about how popular snooker was in the 1970s and 1980s. The top players even had a song in the charts.

I had a Spectrum ZX and played the snooker game for hours on end. Can’t imagine youngsters playing snooker on any of their gadgets these days.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 11/01/2022 01:04

@DropYourSword @Jouleigh

I thought Ray Mears too... but don’t trust me anymore 😂

@GreenClock I loved my ZX Spectrum Blush never had snooker though, but I was great at Daley Thompson (sp?) decathlon broke two joysticks on the cycling

@ErrolTheDragon thank you! When he wakes up I’m going to ask him
and I actually had, although I thought poetry first, then music, so still not covering myself in glory here Blush

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 11/01/2022 01:18

Alex Higgins, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Stephen Hendry, yes, recognise all those! And never heard of the player with the cute bum, but willing to research Grin

DH is 53, his family were big fans of all sports!

Cherrypies · 11/01/2022 01:18

Blimey, I remember him, he is 89 now.
Tony Knowles mentioned upthread, yep liked him.
Steve Davis used to live up the road to me, never saw him though.
