DH is appalled, I am clueless!

Help back me up here... or join DH in shaking your head sadly 😂

YABU of course, everybody knows!
YANBU who?

OP posts:
SpindleyCrow · 11/01/2022 01:28

John Spencer, he was another one from Pot Black. The 'gentlemanly' one.

They were all immaculately turned out back then, not like today what with the waistcoats that look like they've got beer mats sewn onto them.

Probably about the same amount of hair product in use though.

ChrimboGateauxCatto · 11/01/2022 01:33

YABU if you are 50+ (I'm 51 and know of him)

CheeseMmmm · 11/01/2022 01:38

Of course NBU!

I know who was but watched snooker as a kid back... Decades now!

Well known snooker players from what... 40ish years ago is hardly a 'you've never heard of France???!!' type situation!!!

If he's being all dickish about it....

Hold on got a plan for you!

Giggorata · 11/01/2022 01:40

I'm old and have been a big snooker fan for years and years.
Ray Reardon is a snooker legend. 🎱

GiantHaystacks2021 · 11/01/2022 01:48

He was a truly great snooker player and showed tremendous sportsmanship always.
One of the old guard of snooker.
They don't make them like him any more.

Looked remarkably like Dracula which led snooker commentators to say stuff like - "That's another nail in the coffin for Reardon" or "Reardon has risen from the dead again." Grin

spongedog · 11/01/2022 01:56

@ChocolateDeficitDisorder

Remember the young lad...Stephen Hendry?

Yup, 53 in a couple of days.

Just no. He cant be - he is the young lad. Very young. I did have a misspent youth watching snooker. Anything rather than revise for exams!

(And yes Op yabu - we all know who Ray Reardon is!)

CheeseMmmm · 11/01/2022 02:03

What's an area you are interested in enough that has lots of things,

And that he has little to know interest in our knowledge of?

Anything?

Things that people generally know eg

Major or famous historical events, discoveries, figures, anything
Wars, big stuff...
Films from past or any genres
Music
Oscar types
Designers who changed fashion eg qaunt Westwood
Anything!

Needs to be believable that you know the thing. Needs to be pretty common knowledge... Tough thing to think of maybe!

CheeseMmmm · 11/01/2022 02:09
@TheHairyDinosaur see that’s what I was trying to say to DH, he’s convinced Ray Reardon is a household name... I did start laughing when he said ‘a household name... like... like JFK or Marilyn Monroe’ though Grin 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

That's properly funny!

I would not expect anyone who-

*wasn't that era and snooker was on and they actually watched a reasonable bit

Or

*A big snooker fan who also interested in more than what's going on now which many wouldn't be

To have any clue who they are and also no surprise if never heard name!

Is he generally poor at gauging this sort of thing?!

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 11/01/2022 02:15

Oh god, thank you to all of you who’ve taken the trouble to reply and/or vote so far! Looks like I’m even more ignorant than I thought Blush

@CheeseMmmm I am contemplating a new patio Grin. I may bury myself under it at this rate

OP posts:
CheeseMmmm · 11/01/2022 02:23

Sorry caught up-

Lol it's one of those things about your family and growing up!

Accepting what is watched, eaten, read etc at home is rarely considered if doesn't come up!

My stuff like that would be maybe-

*Not having heard of Bernard hinault, Laurent fignon esp if that era.
*Not knowing what Ariel, Norton were famous British makes of 1950s ish.
*Not knowing that foxglove is digitalis used as heart drug can use to poison someone.
*No knowledge whatsoever of history of London sewer system.

I mean. I just assumed it was standard to know this obvious stuff!

CheeseMmmm · 11/01/2022 02:26

Thing I have totally wtaf-

 • Close friend also born early 70s NEVER SEEN STAR WARS. How? I literally couldn't get to grips with that.
CheeseMmmm · 11/01/2022 02:29

Mind you I've never seen more than a few mins of Titanic.

Oh oh-

And that era.
Star Trek Kirk Spock bb2 after kids TV finished on bbc1.
If same era as me. How can you know NOTHING about it and don't remember ever seeing it? Kirk Spock names vague awareness but other than that zero.
We only had 4 (3?) channels FFS! I mean how managed to have no idea?!

CheeseMmmm · 11/01/2022 02:31

Ask your DH if he remembers the name of woman baddie Blake's 7, the theme tune to star cops.

Ooh ooh and the name of kids prog with talking plant, drogma currency and taxi home! (Tbf he may have been too grown up for that!).

Great ideas, thank you!

I’ve tried famous show jumpers/eventers etc but he maintains they are niche knowledge not ‘household names’ Grin

I can bring some American history, the Russian revolution, polar expeditions (particularly the Franklin or Scott expeditions) the Spurs team under Ozzy’s management, (yes, I have the single, cheers Dad 😂) ancient legends/Gods, anything to do with Harry Potter or LOTR, Buffy, the X files, or Oscar Wilde to the table...

I'm judging myself right now Blush

Eek! How much more don’t I know? Blush And I’m going to be asking DH about these too 😁
 1. oh god, not a clue, sorry Blush

 2. Ariel... washing powder?? Norton... er... household/drug/toiletries?

 3. Foxglove/digitalis yes, always been annoyed that the X-Files got it the wrong way around

 4. Have some knowledge, not much though!

CheeseMmmm · 11/01/2022 03:01

Ok hold up.

Should have said play long game. Wait.

However seems he's got the surely everyone knows from childhood thing going on!

Has he conceded that snooker stars from decades ago aren't actually similar to having heard of James bond, or not knowing what a bicycle is? Maybe giving way a little?

Anyway doesn't sound like he's being an arse just baffled.
And probably thinking wtf else just obvious is actually... Not?

Ok let's find something on your topics (I'm bored!).

CheeseMmmm · 11/01/2022 03:03

OP wait up!

'Eek! How much more don’t I know? blush And I’m going to be asking DH about these too'

No no no!

Those were things I grew up knowing about and thought everyone knew.

But no they really don't because niche! I only know because of parents interests!

Let me know if he gets any

CheeseMmmm · 11/01/2022 03:11

*Not having heard of Bernard hinault, Laurent fignon esp if that era.
-Cycling stars early 80s. I know from Dad watching c4 30 mins prog every day. Early evening. Good theme tune.

*Not knowing what Ariel, Norton were famous British makes of 1950s ish.
-Motorbikes.

*Not knowing that foxglove is digitalis used as heart drug can use to poison someone.

 • One parent hosp doc role in theatre. The one where you must know how much drugs enough to do what needed, without crossing into too much means vv ill or dead.

*No knowledge whatsoever of history of London sewer system.
-This is more some phrases, Victorian bricks incredible engineering feat. Vv old going to start crumbling, vv expensive to update all, oh no! Amazing feat. That's it really. But definitely understood it massively important!

I’m going to be laughing a lot over his ‘examples’ tbh...

CheeseMmmm · 11/01/2022 03:23

How many times did red rum win the national?

Which blue Peter presenter elephant pissed everywhere?

Which DJ 'banned' relax on air with rant?

Names of 'twins' backing singer Dr and medics?

Which band fired (fake but convincing) machine gun at Brits audience?

Sing theme tune to bullseye.

Which actress gave parkie earful when he sexist?

I mean I could go on for hours!

CheeseMmmm · 11/01/2022 03:24

The Brits one more recent you might know!

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 11/01/2022 03:25

Oh crap, insomnia be damned, I’ll be back Smile

OP posts:
CheeseMmmm · 11/01/2022 03:26

And ditch parkie, thought remembered but too young must have imagined it!

Willyoujustbequiet · 11/01/2022 06:04

Dracula snooker player. Household name. In my 40s and hated snooker.

I would be surprised for someone not to have heard of him. Don't think it's an age thing, just general knowledge really.

Hippywannabe · 11/01/2022 06:25

My aunt used to clean for him, I had a carpet from his house when I first moved into my own house.
(I had forgotten about that till this thread lol).
