My must have feature in a car is having manual windows....having been trapped in an all electric car this is vital. My dh thinks I am mad. Aibu?

I just saw on a local Fb group a car whose onboard camera activated when it detected a bump a took a photo of the offending car!

That's a feature I would like!

LondonQueen · 08/01/2022 11:33

They still do cars with manual windows?
Mine are:
Heated seats
Apple CarPlay
Parking sensors!
e-call - It's only a recent addition to most cars but when I crashed my own car it had called the emergency services and given them my location before I could even really process what was happening. It's really a lifesaver.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 08/01/2022 11:34

Heated windscreens.
Bluetooth or USB connectivity.
Decent boot space.
Reliable.

Automatic is essential. I drove a manual for the first 10 years, would never go back.

I didn't realise proper climate control was so much better, until I had it. Would never again not have that.

When I bought my current car new in 2014, I rejected what was otherwise my first choice because it did not have Adaptive Cruise Control as an option. I really loved the idea of the technology, and I do use it every time I drive.

Things that I have, possibly even paid extra for, that are a bit meh.

  • Parking sensors. Virtually useless. I can get within the right number of feet of an obstacle without help, if they want to help, they should enabled me to judge distances in inches, which they don't.
  • Automatic headlight dimming. The only benefit I've derived from the few hundred pounds I paid for this option is the realisation that in the average year I never need to use my lights on high-beam.
  • heated seats. Might be slightly less useless in a diesel where the main heating system takes a while to generate some heat, but in a petrol car with an efficient climate control system heated seats are a waste of time.
  • reversing camera. Only helps with getting really close to the car behind you when parallel parking, in all other situations relying on it is more dangerous than not having it at all, because it give you no warning of the things you are going to scrape the corners/sides of your car on. Things you would see if you weren't relying on it when reversing.

Thing that is cool but not sure I would pay extra for again: automatic steering during parallel parking. It's a good feature that I enjoy using, but it was an expensive option.

Thing that I haven't experienced but am sure I would like: surround camera system. I believe this would do the job that parking sensors fail to.

Almost forgot, keyless!
I drove DH's car a few days ago and was pulling in the handles waiting for it to unlock, oh how times have changed...

hangrylady · 08/01/2022 11:39

It just needs to be massive. I run a business which requires me to transport a lot of stuff so I need a big car. Other than that as long as it's reliable I'm not too fussed.

We only have on street parking and the street WhatsApp group if any space has been wasted 🤯. The cameras are a godsend!

Powered tailgate

BestIsWest · 08/01/2022 11:40

Heated seats. Four doors. Must fit in my garage. That’s it.

BestIsWest · 08/01/2022 11:42

Oh, a few more cup holders woukd be nice but not essential.

spotcheck · 08/01/2022 11:43

Sensibly placed cupholders

Iheartmysmart · 08/01/2022 11:44

I drove classic minis for years so don’t really have any must haves in terms of technology. What my car does have to have though is the ability to put a huge grin on my face when I drive it.

RandomLondoner · 08/01/2022 11:46

Built in large screen displaying google navigation is essential.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 08/01/2022 11:47

As a reynauds sufferer a heated windscreen was my priority with my last car.

Heated steering wheel would be nice. I can't angle the fans right so in winter my left hand is usually fine but my right hand is always painful.

I would like them to start making cars with heated side windows too so I don't have to scrape anything.

MarshaBradyo · 08/01/2022 11:49

Heated seats
Panoramic roof window thing
Automatic handbrake
Parking sensors
A/C

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/01/2022 11:49

The things I miss when I drive the spare car rather than the main car...

Keyless entry and not having to put key in ignition
Sat Nav
Parking sensors
6th Gear
Back doors
Heated windscreen

I prefer the electric handbrake. It feels a lit safer (but I've seen the manual handbrake fail on a car!)

Iluvfriends · 08/01/2022 11:50

Cheap tax
Cheap insurance
Bluetooth
Manual handbrake
Key fob...(dont like the card or keyless idea)

mandoforever · 08/01/2022 11:54

Blind spot indicator
Parking camera
Apple car play

mewkins · 08/01/2022 11:59

I am very low maintenance. I just want a car I know will start first time, and has 5 doors.

If I give my dad's friends a lift they marvel at the rear window wipers Grin

mewkins · 08/01/2022 11:59

Agh not wipers, winders!

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 08/01/2022 11:59

5 doors
Hatchback
Cheap Insurance
Cheap tax
Real handbrake
Easily accessible and cheap parts
As few fancy electric features that can break and cost a fortune to replace as possible.

Currently have a 1.3l Nissan Micra and love it, easy to drive and park, flies through MOT every year, good amount of boot space and back seats go totally flat for more space.

MajorCarolDanvers · 08/01/2022 12:02

Reversing sensors, dashboard computer and a spare tyre are my must haves.

Wtfdoipick · 08/01/2022 12:03

Days like today the only thing I care about is 4wd, normally cupholders are important, keyless entry and a big boot. Plenty of power points are a bonus too.

longtompot · 08/01/2022 12:05

Our main criteria for our next car is
A softer ride (ed has chronic pain and the ride in our current car is very painful for her)
A tow bar
Privacy glass in the rear
A quiet engine so we can hear the radio/cds

A bonus would be heated seats and steering wheel

lljkk · 08/01/2022 12:07

I am struggling with sensors, my thoughts are "I ALREADY KNEW!" every time one goes off. Our big car screeches constantly reversing down the driveway. No help at all. Now if all I had to do was press a button & the car did its own reversing, that would be useful.
