The same reason we call it a car boot which stems from the days of horse and carriage?

cultkid · 08/01/2022 15:44

Heated seats
Sensors at the front
Bluetooth
Steering wheel controlled radio / phone

Apple connect
Electric windows

I don't have a manual license so it needs to be electric

user1497207191 · 08/01/2022 15:44

A car without stupidly wide door pockets and a huge central console. So many cars these days have too narrow a space for the driver's legs so you feel very cramped in. I've been looking for a new car for a couple of years now and really struggling to find a "normal" sized car that's actually comfortable. I don't want a huge MPV or crew cab pick up which seems to be the only ones wide enough for comfortable seating.

cultkid · 08/01/2022 15:44

Automatic I mean

Oh and electric folding mirrors

Rest is just a bonus x

user1497207191 · 08/01/2022 15:44

Yes, manual windows please.

And a new car with the option of a CD player instead of bluetooth.

TooMuchSugar22 · 08/01/2022 15:45

I'm not fussy at all. I don't need or want any mod cons.

In fact my air con needs re gassing, has done for 2 years. I don't use it so not going to get it done

I'm. Very boring!

MrsHGWells · 08/01/2022 15:57

A smaller middle console to allow a place to stash your phone while charging & or handbag - the passenger seat is not always vacant.

Our new car has most of these. Recently had a courtesy car (while in service) and missed the features hugely.

Keyless entry & auto boot opening/closing is a must have

Heated seats and steering wheel.
Efficient aircon/ heating - esp when cold or car frosted.
Apple airplay & blue tooth (really useful for directions / music / calling if car SatNav is frustratingly random on routes)

Car boot liner / car well liners (front and back for muddy rugby/sports boots and Wellies)

MattHancocksSexTape · 08/01/2022 16:02

Most cars have removable headrests, which are designed with a point at the end of the metal poles.

These can be used to break through the windows in an emergency.

Giggorata · 08/01/2022 16:04

@Lockheart

The problem with adding all these fancy things like heated steering wheels and heated wing mirrors (what's wrong with gloves / a cloth and a scraper?!) and integrated iPad holders and 50 parking sensors complete with video is that there is much more to go wrong with your car and it's going to cost you more in terms of maintenance.

It's like the thread from someone whose washing machine was stuck on Chinese rather than English. Why does the washing machine need a fecking language in the first place?! It's a washing machine!

Don't let the shiny gadgets distract you from proper function and safety.

I agree with this. Mind you, I drive a van, and I think, always will. Much more basic, less to go wrong. DS's posh car is always needing readjustments, services and the costs of spares are horrendous. My yearly service is cheap, because I have the most basic computer on board (I’d prefer none) and my mechanic doesn’t have to fork out a fortune for all the computerised diagnostics. He tells me that soon he won't be able to work on cars at all because of this, and it may end in only the manufacturers or big franchises being able to do so, which will be very costly for the motorist.

Meantime, I carry on with my manual gears, manual windows, separate satnav and DVD player…mpg is good, the seats are comfortable and the heater is excellent.
I could wish for louder speakers.

RozHuntleysStump · 08/01/2022 16:12

Heated seats and a/c

DGRossetti · 08/01/2022 16:17

For driving (me):
Clearly not a popular decision, but speed limiter (if it comes with cruise control fair enough).

Absolutely no fancy infotainment system whatsover apart from supporting Android Auto.

Automatic.

For DW:
Higher seats, doors wide enough to transfer from wheelchair/scooter. Enough boot space for wheelchair & scooter.

FatOaf · 08/01/2022 16:18

Keyless entry & auto boot opening/closing is a must have

Must-not-haves for me. Guaranteed to fail and very expensive to fix.

etulosba · 08/01/2022 16:21

There is no possible way a 1972 Range Rover had a heated windscreen as an original fitting - that's just nonsense.

That is not what I said, was it? I was making the point that it was obviously fitted before Ford owned Land Rover.

Ford patented QuickClear in 1977. It was a patent covering their particular application of existing technology. Heated windscreens had been automotive use since at least 1964. Many years before that for aeroplanes.

A flat dashboard. When I'm having my MaccyD's in the car, I want somewhere flat to put the drink, fries and burger. Far too many cars have various slopes and angles and nowhere flat at all.

Lipsandlashes · 08/01/2022 16:28

Heated front windscreen and aircon

maddy68 · 08/01/2022 16:31

Digital radio
Heated seats

etulosba · 08/01/2022 16:31

I prefer the low end torque of a diesel but guess with the move towards electric I’m going to have to get over this at some point.

You won’t. Like steam engines, electric motors produce maximum torque at zero rpm. You can’t get much more low end than that.

housemaus · 08/01/2022 16:32

Decent MPG, Bluetooth, 5 doors. I'm easily pleased!

(If I were being more fussy, cruise control and heated seats would be nice - although me and my Raynaud's miss the old work car I drove which had a heated steering wheel and felt like luxury!).

Blossomtoes · 08/01/2022 16:32

Heated seats and a phone charging pad. Stuff like climate control, self folding wing mirrors and keyless entry are things I just take for granted these days.

LondonQueen · 08/01/2022 16:33

@etulosba

FORD QUICK CLEAR

Clever marketing from Ford. Other manufacturers were offering electrically heated windscreens before Ford. Land Rover, for example.

Exactly this, my dads Land Rover Discovery has this and it's ancient, I think about 2009.
housemaus · 08/01/2022 16:33

Oh and definitely not those weird little wing mirrors that are actually just cameras that I've seen on a few newer cars. I really really hope that doesn't become standard.

Thoosa · 08/01/2022 16:35

Adaptive cruise control.
Ability to play podcasts and audiobooks from my phone.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 08/01/2022 16:35

Only on MN would a 12 year old car be described as ancient.
