Original thread here.
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4446999-To-think-so-many-middle-class-clothes-are-ugly?pg=40

I admit I am hardly a style guru. But when I joined Mumsnet people talked about lots of companies I had never heard of like Toast. So I followed links of clothes posted and looked at the websites mentioned. And was shocked at how ugly so much of the clothing was.
Shapeless grey dresses. Black loose trousers teamed with black tunics which make the model look like she is a member of a cult. Shapeless brown t-shirts.
They are just so ugly. AIBU?

Hi Grin

MaxNormal · 07/01/2022 22:53

Yay! Placemarking. For some reason this thread has become my happy place.

Bitofachinwag · 07/01/2022 23:00

From the other thread;
The rumblings about 'modest' dressing becoming a trend worry me quite a lot. While I support everyone's right to dress as they see fit, I think the idea that virtuous women cover themselves as much as possible is a dangerous one, to be resisted (I consider all religions to be about male supremacy anyway)
But who says those women are virtuous? I know some people do for religious reasons. But if you are just comfy dressing in a way thay you consider "modest" that doesn't mean that I consider myself "virtous". Interesting....I suppose it just depends on how you define these concepts.

Whoever recommended Little Lies, the stuff is gorgeous.

I agree with a PP that the style is a statement that the wearer is above such considerations as needing to look attractive to anyone else.

DrNo007 · 07/01/2022 23:04

Couldn’t agree more. I even took to emailing links to especially ugly clothes to a friend who reacts similarly to me. As she is more tuned into fashion than I am, I asked her what she thought it was all about.

She said in her view during the lockdowns many people have put on weight and, given the rise in working from home, they can’t be arsed with tailored (and thus tight and uncomfortable) clothes any more. So everything is shapeless, baggy and dark coloured so it doesn’t show the dirt.

I am not really convinced though as you can wear stretchy clothes that are comfortable but flattering at the same time, in nice colours, but what I see in the catalogues and on websites is baggy ugly stuff that is often black or grey or sludge colour. Even the models look terrible in these clothes so there is no hope for the rest of us.

RoyalFamilyFan · 07/01/2022 23:04

@MaxNormal I am enjoying it too.
As long as no one takes it too seriously.

Some of those models look genuinely appalled to be there and wearing that.

@RoyalFamilyFan yes definitely not meaning to upset anyone. As I said im far from winning any style awards myself, I just find it quite a sociologically fascinating phenomenon.

ofwarren · 07/01/2022 23:16

I've enjoyed googling all the clothing brands from the previous thread so I'm checking in!

RoyalFamilyFan · 07/01/2022 23:17

Someone mentioned Pru at the end of the other thread as someone who uses big accessories.

I agree with a PP that the style is a statement that the wearer is above such considerations as needing to look attractive to anyone else.

But people’s ideas about what constitutes ‘attractive’ varies wildly! I mean, I’m sure the women with Oompa Loompa tans cut with white facial stripes of contouring, fish pout lip fillers, Scouse brows and fluorescent claw nails put that amount of effort into their appearance because they consider it attractive? Someone else’s idea of attractive might be a Plumo dungaree dress, brogues and ankle socks, accessorised with plain lip gloss and a scowl.

Who adjudicates?

That necklace 🤣🤣
PickAChew · 07/01/2022 23:25

I'd be so uncomfortable in that necklace of Pru's. I'm already dealing with a rash caused by a badly placed and rather harsh seam on a vest that's left a big red, itchy spot on my chest.

Someone was pushing woven gypsy (?) on the previous thread. Yeah, that would keep my wobbly, stretch marked thighs warm when the feels like temperature is - 4, like today.

PickAChew · 07/01/2022 23:33

And sometimes this relaxed fit doesn't look good on models precisely because they're made up like models and posing like models and pouting like models but as soon as someone with a relaxed face is sitting back in a chair, leaning over a desk or reaching for something on a shelf, it just looks like normal clothes. Normal clothes that you can move in without being as informal as joggers.

MaxNormal · 07/01/2022 23:34

Some posters were somewhat dismissive of the concept of clothing having a class on the previous thread.
I'm currently reading the Ian Mortimer Time Traveller series and in the middle ages your income and social status quite literally dictated the fabric, cut and worth of the clothing you were by law allowed to wear.

Why has Pru unravelled a science lab model of DNA and put it round her neck?

yup, sumptuary laws.....not just in the Uk but in ancient Rome and japan too off the top of my head.
toddybell · 07/01/2022 23:45

@RoyalFamilyFan I NEED to know where this dress is from (your post on the previous thread)

misses point of thread entirely

RoyalFamilyFan · 07/01/2022 23:48

@toddybell It is not a dress, but top and trousers. It was on the home page of Toast website and is part of their leisurewear. My own view is that they make stylish pyjamas, but are too shapeless for anything else.

toddybell I found the original! The women's patriotic Chairman Mao suit circa 1970.

Sorry I meant outfit not dress. I love it 🙈🙈

Is it bad that I like it and would actually wear it with wild abandon?
