To think this card is grim and not appropriate in a shop where children can see it?

Just that really.

Went into Scribbler to get a birthday card DS10 was with me and saw this. I thought it was grim and shouldn’t be on view in a high street shop where children can see it.

The problem is even with blatantly adult places like a pub, on Mumsnet you still get people complaining about there being adult conversations going on, well I should be warned.

saraclara · 07/01/2022 21:29

@melj1213 seriously, you think the average person walking up to that shop will see that sign? Really? You notice small black and white signs right at the bottom of a big storefront window when you're focusing on the heading towards and through the doorway?

If you didn’t see this then that’s your fault not the shop’s fault.

The shop has deliberately put it where customers are unlikely to see it. It's not the customers' fault if they miss it.

TroysMammy · 07/01/2022 21:31

I had never heard of them so looked them up. I love their cards. It's a pity I make my own cards as I'd love to get some of theirs but people expect my boring
twee cards.

PomegranateRose · 07/01/2022 21:36

@Butchyrestingface

I wouldn't take a child into a Scribbler shop. I wouldn't take them into an adult sex shop either and then complain when they copped a load of a whip and nipple tassels.
This is exactly what my first thought was - I’m glad someone else said it 🤣
Mumtumtastic · 07/01/2022 21:38

OP, thank you for your post. This is symptomatic of a bigger issue which is the mainstream sexualisation of society which imo, is making it an ever increasingly toxic place for children. Children should be able to enjoy a childhood and not have their innocence casually snatched away. That link about sex toys in Poundland has given me the proper rage! That is NOT OK as a family store! How is it legal? Sex toys on shelves in full view of a shop like Poundland, a shop so popular with families is very worrying.

OP I don’t think it’s fair for you to be blasted or blamed for not knowing Scribblers USP. How can we possibly be to blame for the vile products some retailers are stocking in plain sight? There’s no way we can know all the thousands of different retailers out there and there are new ones popping up all the time, how can we be expressed to know what all the USP’s might be? Even if we did, with previously neutral shops like Poundland embracing sex lines like it’s normal for kids to be exposed to incredibly sexual stuff, you just can’t assume what’s safe on the high street anymore. It’s a minefield.

In a different but related example, I went into a card shop the other day and on a display table, square centre in the shop, was the most disgusting and frightening array of objects - all huge life size skulls, dripping blood and rotting flesh, maggots crawling out of the eyes etc, scary statues of grim reapers, all gory death stuff, skeleton hands half rotted. This was a CARD shop!! 😳 I was so glad on this occasion I didn’t have my toddler with me, it would have frightened her hugely. I spoke to the manager to ask why (on earth) it was in there and she just laughed and said it was her most popular line of stock and had actually deliberately moved it from a quiet corner of the shop to place it in full view, as it made her so many sales. When I pointed out that it was graphic and scary and would scare little children she just laughed and said ‘oh never mind then’!

Sorry have gone on a bit but this stuff just makes me 😡 Will finish on one last thought - there was a time, not that long ago, when you could pop to the shops with your kids and not be subjected to filth! You just would go shopping and have a nice time, you wouldn’t need to furnish yourself with fore knowledge of all the store’s USP’s in order to avoid exposure to vile inappropriate sexual content or ( in my case) disgusting graphic and frightening products. The future is looking pretty devoid of decency.

SeasonFinale · 07/01/2022 21:45

@lightisnotwhite

They do but by same token shops shouldnt have to be children friendly at all times.

Why not? Unless they are over 18 environments they should be suitable for children. Much better to have tame and non offensive public spaces.

You mean like having the parental guidance notice on the window like all Scribbler stores have thus making shoppers aware that there may be items unsuitable for children. Like that you mean?
jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 07/01/2022 22:03

@Etinoxaurus

I ripped a rude card up in Tesco’s once 😬 Scribblers is different though.
But think of the Points you missed.

Hastina · 07/01/2022 22:12

Well I'm glad you said. I thought it was like Smiggle with fluffy note books.

eastegg · 07/01/2022 22:16

@MondayYogurt

I keep expecting to see a birthday card in Scribbler that just says I HATE YOU AND I WANT YOU TO DIE
That would be loads funnier than the bum sex card, which I think is deeply unfunny. It’s as if someone just thought ‘let’s say bum sex and worry about the rest of the joke later’. I don’t think Scribbler is the place for me!

There’s usually a sign on the window and or door. How can you blame a shop for people’s lack of reading the sign saying so where it is visible to see.

I work in retail and we have a sign for our opening times that we have moved and people still knock on the door trying to get in when it shows we’re not open yet. I’ve accidently hurt someone and have had trouble getting onto the shop floor because people decide to stand right in front of a door that has a bolted on sign that is bigger than an A4 with big bold letters “FIRE EXIT, DONT BLOCK

phoenixrosehere · 07/01/2022 22:18

*have moved for customers to see easily several times

Viviennemary · 07/01/2022 22:21

This is hilarious. I mean I know you’ve committed a criminal offence, but that’s really tickled me.
OwlinaTree · 07/01/2022 22:35

I want to know what the Tesco card said.

I've never heard of scribbler. The card made me grin - I wasn't offended but didn't think it was hilarious.

I used to have a competition with a friend about who could buy the most horrendously rude card, I wish scribbler had been around then!

Mumtumtastic · 07/01/2022 22:48

Granted I was pretty annoyed when I wrote this and it did come across a bit hand bag grabby, lol! 😂

Honestly though, does no one remember shopping and how it used to be? I didn’t have kids in the 90’s but it was a very neutral activity and family friendly. Is it just ok for kids to be exposed to sexually graphic stuff then?

Or for that matter, see scary stuff that frightens them?

Sorry I was under the impression that children should be protected and not have their innocence broken, obviously I’m on the wrong thread Hmm

HonestlyFFS · 07/01/2022 22:51

Ewwww. Who would buy that? Gross

I was 11/12 in 1990 and not sure the 90s were quite the 'neutral', 'family friendly' shopping experience you remember.

When I worked in a pub an old couple came in on a Saturday evenings and chose to sit at a table directly next to a table of a large group of drunk football fans after the match.

They'd been no trouble. But the old man heard some bad language and massively kicked off, started lecturing them and was just a pompous twat. Who'd have thought there would be swearing by a group of drunk mates in a pub?

gogohm · 07/01/2022 23:03

Never heard of scribbler, are they British?

mollypuss1 · 07/01/2022 23:15

Bloody hell, it sells cards not crack. It has a warning sign in the window, if you miss it and go in then find the cards are not to your delicate taste then leave and learn never to return. It doesn’t need all this drama over a few rude words on a card.

Soundofshuna · 07/01/2022 23:25

I’ve been in scribbler before& didn’t notice! They also sell cuddly fruit & neon pens..( I thought the card was funny too although probably wouldn’t buy it)

Kipperandarthur · 07/01/2022 23:32

They are renowned for adult humour cards that are rather distasteful.
Not my thing but I know of people who buy them and recipients who think they are funny.

Each to their own. They do also have warning signs on their windows.

It’s a bit like taking your DC into an Ann Summers Shop but you obviously didn’t know that.
