Yes, that would be because viruses mutate. It is not in the interest of a virus to kill everyone it comes into contact with. The flu virus continues because it comes in different strains, as does covid. So science is always running to keep up. But by being vaccinated, there is less chance of catching it in the first place, and therefore passing it on to other people, say - for example - by holding a tennis tournament with no social distancing or masks. Or attending public events. Or being at a photo shoot without disclosing your positive test...

But covid has over 99% survival rate and for those other diseases you don't have to be jabbed 3 times a year. They haven't eradicated flu...
COVID is around 100 times more deadly that seasonal 'flu. We have a targeted annual vaccination programme against 'flu because even though it is far less deadly than COVID it still has a significant impact on our health service. If it was as deadly as COVID it would require further action, for example if there was a strain that developed that had higher mortality than normal (e.g. like "Spanish 'Flu"). Trying to get rid of 'flu would be a huge task given how it is endemic in the human population. Don't kid yourself that that means we are not at risk from more virulent strains developing and impacting us in a simialr way to COVID.

In short, pointing out the situation with 'flu is far from the gotcha you think it is.

Apparently ND's father said 'The assassination attempt on the best sportsman in the world is over, 50 bullets to Novak’s chest - after all, he gives support to a young 17-year-old player, so that’s Nole, a man, a brother, see you in Paris.' What on earth is he going on about? Does he know what the word 'assassination' means?

But covid has over 99% survival rate

Have you actually had covid? Because even people it doesn't kill can have all sorts of nasty after-effects from it: long covid, like chronic fatigue syndrome, is no fun at all, and nor is losing your sense of smell and taste for more than six months, and nor is cognitive impairment.

Even when what you have is not a serious case, the disease itself is probably nastier than anything most people have had in their lives, unless they've had pneumonia badly -- on the whole, double pneumonia devastated me less, and the covid I had was not regarded by anyone including me as a serious case. I am still having breathing trouble after having had the filthy disease in November and stayed in bed for eight days with it. And that was when I'd had two doses of vaccine; I might well have been part of your 1% unfortunate-statistical-deaths-not-to-worry-about-them if the vaccine had not yet been invented when I caught it.

Long Covid is no walk in the park for many including the poor young man in the article below. Very much the opposite.

SirChenjins · 16/01/2022 19:13

Anyone claiming that covid has a survival rate of over 99% should probably do a bit of a face check - this is good ourworldindata.org/mortality-risk-covid

SirChenjins · 16/01/2022 19:13

@flipflop76 But covid has over 99% survival rate
And over 99% of people with visas get into Australia
Over 99% of people in 'no jab no job' areas don't get sacked
But apparently those are issues to stamp your feet about and cry that's it's not fair and how terrible it is

Hey, that wasn't a complaint! I am lucky, and I know it. I'm old enough have retired, so I don't have to work, and I haven't any dependents. And yes, it is getting better, slowly. I just get fed up when people tell me it's not so bad and only one per cent die of it. That's one per cent too bloody many if the vaccine means that they wouldn't have done.

What's the percentage of patients with covid in ICU who are unvaccinated? 89%? Glad I am not one of them; very sorry indeed for people who can't have the vaccine for whatever good medical reason, no sympathy whatever for any fool who thinks it's clever to refuse it in case it might make them ... nothing like as dead as the disease may.

Roussette · 16/01/2022 19:46

No, I know you weren't complaining. Smile

Yes, I think the figure is 89% or 86% unvaxed in ICUs which is really awful. I can't even talk about the anti vaxxer I know, it makes me too cross!

TBH I could do with a bit of a face check! Grin
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/01/2022 19:52

(The 89% is not really that simple, because there are more vaccinated people than unvaccinated in this country; there is a better explanation than I could hope to give at ourworldindata.org/covid-deaths-by-vaccination )

Cocogreen · 16/01/2022 19:52

My daughter works in a hospital rehab unit in Australia with recovering covid patients, all unvaccinated. All still on oxygen, brain damage, learning to walk again, terrible lung damage. One woman was in ICU vented for 6 weeks. Slept for 6 hours and needed more oxygen after her first shower a few days ago.
People like this tennis player who think this virus is a cold are morons.

That's because there's more than one type of flu and it keeps mutating and forms into different types of flu and on and on it goes. It's like saying why haven't they found a cure for cancer? Which cancer? What sub type of cancer? etc etc

Depends on the reason though. I haven't had a booster as I'm still unwell from my second jab 6 months ago. I guess I'm now considered unvaccinated but there is a reason for not having a booster.

flipflop76 · 16/01/2022 21:19

Recent published data is showing 48% in ICU are unvaccinated. The data is linked on @statsjamie twitter page.

Novak Djokovic has flown out of Australia after the Federal Court upheld the government's decision to cancel his visa.

Immigration Minister Alex Hawke announced on social media that the world number one men's tennis player had left the country.

What about all the “celebrities” let in who didn’t have to isolate in the COVID Hotel but got to go and “isolate” in nice surroundings.

I do think Australia have to take a long hard look at themselves and wonder why on the face of it others have been waved through the airport and into waiting limos and others they decided to make an example of.

It might depend on the situation by the time of the US Open. If he wants to compete in any other tournaments there before then, I don't know.

With the French Open, it might depend on who wins their election.

He'll be at Wimbledon.
