Being deported.
What an entitled idiot.

tttigress · 16/01/2022 07:24

I feel sorry for him, and given his track record he probably would have won, so the tournament is tainted.

Why do you feel sorry for him.

He didn't follow the rules. He got caught. He received an appropriate consequence.

tara66 · 16/01/2022 07:40

The organisers of the tennis event should have known how to handled this situation in the first place. They should have not allowed this to happen but they wanted him. So not entirely his fault.

TeloMere · 16/01/2022 07:44

The right decision.
He thought the rules didn't apply to him and it was obvious he never had any intention of getting vaccinated before going to Australia.

AlternativePerspective · 16/01/2022 07:47

I don’t think the tennis organisers are responsible for the the fact he knowingly travelled less than 14 days before entering the country and then lied about it?

Or that he broke Surbia isolation rules?

He faces questions there as well now.

Why feel sorry for him, this did t happen by accident! Just because he'd probably win doesn't mean he gets to break the rules.

He took the choice to lie, he got caught.

Onthedowns · 16/01/2022 07:50

This was only ever the right decision. He's flagrantly shown complete disregard in his own country for covid and its potential effects, messed up forms, convenient positive result. The Australian government may not have handled well initially.

However one person is not bigger than the tournament. His family leave a lot to be desired with their rantings. He knew the risks being unvaccinated could bring this may effect other countries too.
It's an old age cheats never prosper isn't it?

Let's concentrate on the players and tournament.

To take this further.

Since you feel sorry for him because he might have won, you seem to think he doesn't need to follow rules. So why not ignore the rules of the Australian Open and just say he has already won?

Sirzy · 16/01/2022 08:09

He had a simple route to take where he could have played.

His choices created this. Both in terms of not being vaccinated and then the “errors” made by his team.

StartupRepair · 16/01/2022 08:09

Interesting to see how he goes getting into the US.

Figgit · 16/01/2022 08:13

The only person who’s tainted the tournament is Djokovic. Rules don’t apply to him? Tested positive but not isolating? Blaming his agent for filling in the immigration docs incorrectly? He has nobody to blame but himself.

If he had participated and won, it would have made an absolute mockery of the other players who had followed the rules.

Disgraceful, entitled man. (Bad week for those, eh?)

Why feel sorry for someone too stupid to get a vaccine and who has behaved horribly throughout this pandemic?

He's lied, possibly about contracting covid last month, and he held tournaments/parties which resulted in a lot of people getting covid. He has questionable views on a lot of topics and his behaviour on court is often unpleasant and designed to intimidate his opponents (I've never seen Rafa or Federer resort to this).

I only wish he'd be banned from the remaining tournaments.

Roussette · 16/01/2022 08:25

I agree. I am due to fly to US in less than two weeks. Entry requirements are so so stringent and I check the CDC website almost daily (!) to make sure I have everything in order. If someone else was filling out the forms for me, I would still be checking.

No, I don't feel sorry for him. Just get jabbed Novax and all your troubles will melt away.
Someone who diagnosed themselves with allergies by putting a piece of bread on his stomach means he won't I imagine.

Flatandhappy · 16/01/2022 08:25

Just put him on a plane ffs (like anyone else would have been as soon as they had finished their original interview with border control) and get him off the front page of the newspaper every day!

@tttigress

I disagree. The tournament would have been far more tainted if he had been allowed to stay. Would have shown that once you reach world no 1 the rules don't apply to you.

Especially as other players, who do not have the money of Djokovic have either been refused entry or had their visa cancelled. One of which has had the vaccine but not one Australia recognises.

The focus can now be on the tennis not the visa application of one player.

Sirzy · 16/01/2022 08:28

I think now one country has set the precedent, and given the backlash over how poorly Australia have handled this at times, other countries will now be a lot firmer in saying to him and other well known people “follow the rules or don’t come”

Shitzngiggles · 16/01/2022 08:48

Obviously not being vaccinated meant more to him than winning his 21st Grand Slam. If it meant that much to him he would have got the jab. But it all boils down to him thinking he's above the rules.
Be interesting now to see what happens with other tournaments around the world , not just the Grsnd Slams.

SirChenjins · 16/01/2022 08:49

Great news from Oz - they did the right thing.

user1471447863 · 16/01/2022 08:51

The right decision finally made.
There are rules to follow to get into Australia and they apply to everyone, regardless of how good you are at something.

I do think his convenient short-lived and minor Covid infection in December was just that - convenient. How fortunate it didn't impact his training or fitness so close to a major tournament Hmm

Apart from the deportation he has also shown himself up to be either a liar or a plague-rat by having to admit to attending functions while "isolating" when the holes in his story started getting looked at.
He fucked about and found out

Roussette · 16/01/2022 08:55

Yes, so agree about other players. They have had their tournament tainted by this, but I doubt Novak cares at all.

And yes, to the player who was turned away because she had had the Sputnik double jabs and it wasn't recognised by Australia. She arrived here too, and was sent straight home

This is just going to make him dig hies knees in deeper.

Fake Covid passes are readily available in some countries, maybe this will be his next move.

GoodnightGrandma · 16/01/2022 09:01

Well done Australia, kick his arse out of there !
