I’m team Australia. I love the fact he doesn’t get leniency just because he’s famous.

he has a very smug attitude about it all. It must be exhausting being so big headed all the time

Sausagedogsarethebest · 06/01/2022 08:23

Novax is being unreasonable. He has to abide by Australia's rules, same as everyone else.

itwasntaparty · 06/01/2022 08:23

Australia.

Why should he be above the rules? The world won't stop if he doesn't play.

MsAgnesDiPesto · 06/01/2022 08:26

@Gardeningtipsneeded

But they gave him the visa under their own rules and told him he could play. They granted the medical exemption. They revoked it on his arrival because of backlash.
This has just been explained on Today by an Aussie sports journalist. It’s about state v federal law - he as allowed by the State of Victoria to go to Victoria and travel within the state, but this is trumped by federal rules which say that he’s not allowed into the country in order to get to Victoria and exercise that permission.

Quite rightly, too, IMO.

SickAndTiredAgain · 06/01/2022 08:26

Reportedly several players have been granted he exemption under the rules so I’m not sure it’s fair to say the rules are being changed just for him.

However of course if he doesn’t meet the rules, then Australia is right to enforce them.

RockinHorseShit · 06/01/2022 08:26

Team Australia for sure.

We've seen this with rabid Quanon antivaxx friends who emigrated there last year & thought by buying the most expensive flights possible meant they'd get less hassle... it didn't, they were kept in quarantine for nearly 3 months & made to feel very unwelcome... no sympathy at all & thought the Australian attitude to them was brilliantly up front & took no shit

katmarie · 06/01/2022 08:26

The BBC was saying this morning that the visa and vaccine exemption was issued by the state (Victoria) however border control is a federal level organisation, so has the power to overrule. It might not be a case of Australia changing their mind as such, as much as the federal government overruling the state in light of public opinion. I think the Australians are right though, if he doesn't want to be vaccinated that's his choice. They don't have to let him in, or let him play. Those are the consequences of his choice.

Gechik · 06/01/2022 08:27

Maybe he will be able to quarantine as the tennis doesn't start for a while, he could do some Joe Wicks type exercise with a tennis racquet and starjumps to keep fit.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 06/01/2022 08:28

Team Australia all the way! Why does he think the rules don't apply to him??

Some of the stuff on twitter is quite funny 😄 Novak to where you came from is my current favourite.

CornishGem1975 · 06/01/2022 08:28

Australia has done completely the right thing!

Porridgeislife · 06/01/2022 08:28

@Gechik

The visa to play is apparently a different one to the one that lets you into Australia
You need two separate exemptions. One for the state you wish to enter and one for the country’s borders.

He got the state exemption but not the federal exemption.

SuspiciousHumanoid · 06/01/2022 08:29

I don’t like Australia’s rules, but if they are Australia’s rules then they apply to everybody.

StCharlotte · 06/01/2022 08:29

Most countries don’t permit travellers that aren’t fully vaccinated to enter without some type of quarantine period

Exactly. Why didn't he just arrive early and do the quarantine? Instead he's done himself out of a massive payday and opportunity to set a record just to make a point it seems.

littledrummergirl · 06/01/2022 08:29

Team Novak.
He had been granted a medical exemption, it's nobody's business but his and his doctors of why.

JustJoinedRightNow · 06/01/2022 08:31

Team Australia - he can’t just think the rules don’t apply to him because he’s the top tennis player. If he wants to play, then meet the conditions of entry. If not, he doesn’t get to play.

Flyonawalk · 06/01/2022 08:32

Team Novak.

Australia have treated their citizens badly. The strict lockdowns were bound to be futile in terms of keeping covid out.

Lalliella · 06/01/2022 08:34

Djokovic is U, and also a twat. Glad Australia are making a high profile example of him. Stick to the rules, what makes him so entitled and special?

TidyDancer · 06/01/2022 08:34

Team Australia. Novak's a brat who thinks the rules shouldn't apply to him.

TheDogsMother · 06/01/2022 08:34

I don't understand why Novak has to make a statement about having a medically exempt status. Why didn't he just keep this fact between him and his Drs. I think the fact that he was previously against vaccinations then made this statement publicly has got people's backs up.

outbackjulie · 06/01/2022 08:34

Novaxx is being the usual entitled brat that he always is.

The rules are the rules! He can either go along with them or stay out.

Porridgeislife · 06/01/2022 08:35

Even if Novak gets clearance to enter and play, the Australian match audience will make it completely untenable for him.

He would be best off packing up and heading home, and learning to keep his gob shut on social media.

user1471447924 · 06/01/2022 08:35

Absolutely Team Australia, and New Zealand would do well to follow their example of not bending the tiles for people just because they’re famous, while their own citizens, who are fully vaccinated, still can’t enter.

ItsSnowJokes · 06/01/2022 08:35

Novak has been a vocal anti vaxxer for years. He did a super spreader event last year where loads of people caught covid, he is arrogant and wants the rules to not apply to him.

How can Australians not get home, but he can just get an exemption and be allowed a big pay day from playing.

FiveShelties · 06/01/2022 08:37

Team Oz, their country - their rules.

Roselilly36 · 06/01/2022 08:37

I am against the mandate, I don’t think any country should impose such rules. But to give him an exemption and then rescind it ONCE he has arrived, is wrong. If he didn’t qualify don’t give him the exemption, simple. Once again another u turn, when the people won’t stand for it, and I don’t blame the people for that, Australian Gov have been brutal.
