Oh happy day!!!

ilovesooty · 16/01/2022 09:28

@Sirzy

I think now one country has set the precedent, and given the backlash over how poorly Australia have handled this at times, other countries will now be a lot firmer in saying to him and other well known people “follow the rules or don’t come”
I hope so.
greenlynx · 16/01/2022 09:32

Team Australia here.
I strongly suspected that his Covid test was fake. He’s applied for visa in November. He knew Australia wouldn’t allow unvaccinated in. How on earth he was planning to get in? Did he know that he would get Covid 3 weeks before travel? It’s ridiculous.
And then all these traveling after supposedly positive test…. He should feel lucky there in no investigation.

Paperplain · 16/01/2022 09:32

The reasons will be interesting to read in a few days times. While I agree it's the right decision, it's also concerning from a human rights perspective to see the Minister exercising his rights in such a way - it was accepted that he satisfied the grounds for a visa I believe.

DGRossetti · 16/01/2022 09:34

@StartupRepair

Interesting to see how he goes getting into the US.
Do they have a question "Have you ever been refused entry from another country ?". With the presumption that an answer of yes means no Uncle Sam for you matey ?
errnerrcallnernnernnern · 16/01/2022 09:35

Warren Entsch from Australian gov on bbc radio 5 saying as soon as he saw that Novak had lied on the form and then tried to blame it on his staff, he knew the visa had to be cancelled.

Blackbird2020 · 16/01/2022 09:38

As I’ve said before he’s not being kicked out because he has lied on a form.

He’s being removed because the Australian government thought they could get away with quietly allowing him into the country to play, against all current guidelines, and it backfired on them when their public got (rightly) upset.

Yep all of this!

I’m glad he’s had the appeal rejected. He thought because of his money and status the rules didn’t apply to him. And when he realised they wanted to apply the rules he lied and blamed other people. He’s an arsehole who if was covid positive was happy to go spreading it about.

People like him need to learn about personal responsibility and that your actions can have consequences.

BaconAndAvocado · 16/01/2022 10:09

Another example of an entitled individual thinking they are above the law.

There's a few of those around at the moment.....

Rainbunny · 16/01/2022 10:10

Interesting to see how he goes getting into the US.

I think at this point it's going to be almost impossible for him to compete in the US Open since the USA requires people entering the country to be fully vaccinated with very limited exceptions and it's going to be hard for him to try wrangling an exemption in light of what's happened in Austrlia.

Also the US Open tournament vaccine requirements are controlled by the New York City Department of Health guidelines and they have been very, very strict on requiring people to be fully vaccinated to enter indoor events and large events.

The statment ND issued is fairly respectful of the Australian government but it's clear he feels like the victim in all of this. Can't he admit that the actions he's admitted to are enough to have his visa cancelled: the fact that he didn't quarantine after his (bogus) positive covid test and then flew to Spain which contravened the requirement not to travel 14 days before entering Australia. It's not reasonable to behave like that and still expect another country to allow you to swan in.

Rainbunny · 16/01/2022 10:15

It looks like his family are planning on holding another press conference later today. The victimhood on display here is truly ridiculous. I can't wait to hear what they'll say about Australia.

Maybe the Serbian government can issue economic sanctions against Australia. I'm sure that will teach them a lesson, if they notice that is...

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/01/2022 10:16

What happens now with the Tennis? Is another player in? Or does his first round match not happen and his opponent is through to Second round? (And will Serbia celebrate his success?)

I believe it's a lucky loser from the qualifiers that will now get his spot
Rainbunny · 16/01/2022 10:29

What happens now with the Tennis?

That's easy to handle, a lucky loser from qualifying will get the slot. Players withdraw from tournaments all the time, injuries or testing positive for covid etc.

So it's no big deal usually, although they may have to recalculate the draw a little as he was the number 1 seed. They might move around a few other top seeds to even out the draw now.

Lucky loser just slots into Novax's place. It's too late to move the draw around.

Now what we need (however unlikely) is for Nadal to win and pull ahead on GS again Grin

inheritancetrack · 16/01/2022 10:54

Apparently this won't go away for Novak as he might face similar issues in other countries. Apparently anti vaxxers who have been seriously ill with covid and hospitalised still say they made the right choice even when it nearly killed them. So anti vaxxers dig themselves into a hole and refuse to come out of it. Let's hope Novax digs himself out and gets the vaccine, but I doubt it.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 16/01/2022 10:55

Just as an aside, but still regarding professional sport...

The English Ashes team and their supporting staff have managed to get to Australia and gracefully surrender the Ashes again so had Novax wanted to, he could have...he just thought he was superior. Difficult for him to realise he isn't.

Oh God, there goes the last wicket!🦆

inheritancetrack · 16/01/2022 10:55

I think too, the wondering around in public when he was supposed to have covid really pissed people off. Either lying about his status or totally reckless.

^This.

That he's a tennisist is neither here nor there...the fact he's a liar and is happy to break the local rules for isolation when he has said he's positive is shameful.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/01/2022 11:05

I was slightly disappointed to hear that he had said he would abide by the Australian judiciary's decision; I was looking forward to his not doing so, and being escorted to an aeroplane in handcuffs by two large policemen. Well, not really, but it would have been a way for him to insist on being a martyr rather than just being perceived as a sleazy little person who got caught out breaking the rules.

Watching their various and increasingly bizarre press conferences, can’t help thinking that young Novak never really stood much of a chance of developing into a well-balanced individual Grin. Very odd lot.

The court reached the only possible decision.

Roussette · 16/01/2022 11:43

I do hope the family do the rallying song again. That was a corker

Sorry, I don't understand this.

What is the benefit to the Australian government of having ND playing the tournament?

BluebellsareBlue · 16/01/2022 12:04

Well that's him left Australia after the judges upheld the visa cancellation

Chulainn · 16/01/2022 12:31

I saw on twitter the letter that was sent to Tennis Australia (sorry, I can't remember who sent it) making it clear that medical exemptions based on covid positive tests were for the prior 6 months. The letter was dated 29th November. I never understood how a positive test on 16th December could qualify Djokovic for medical exemption on that basis, as it was outside the time period stated. I think TA have questions to answer, as do the Victoria government (or whoever it was in authority who said his exemption was valid).

I was surprised that Djokovic's family kept quiet after the 2nd visa was cancelled. I thought that maybe they were told to say nothing, considering the strange press conference that got shut down once the narrative changed from Djokovic is king to questions on the truth being asked. I can't wait for the next press conference. They are all bizarre.
