@Alondra I put it in my post because it was breaking news in a BBC article just out 25 minutes ago. Here you are

www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-59920379
Seeing at the article claims he was given a visa by Tennis Australia, I am not sure we can rely on it for accuracy.

Who is being U, Australia or Novak Djokovic?
marcopront · 08/01/2022 09:53

Or actually maybe it's his lawyers who are the problem if they think Tennis Australia can award visas.

Gremlinsateit · 08/01/2022 10:04

@sashagabadon

It’s pretty unbelievable Australia keep refugees in hotels for 8 years! That is extraordinary. I presume they just live there and are free to come and go as they please?

Tennis Australia seem at fault to me here, seems like they gave a nod and a wink it would be ok. It seems very rude and inhospitable to tell him he can come on one hand then do this to him when he arrives. Although I don’t think he is Jesus Confused
Either way it’s a mess and pretty embarrassing.
There are currently English cricket players and their families in Aus at the moment not having the best time either according to reports in U.K. due to all the draconian covid rules ( and probably because they are losing!)

If I was a sportsperson I think I would give Australia a wide berth until all this calms down 2023?

no, we keep them in prisons, both in Australia and offshore. These particular ones have been moved from their previous detention centre to be detained in this hotel due to Covid. They are guarded and never allowed out.
Gremlinsateit · 08/01/2022 10:10

@Alondra

Unfortunately for us, the PM can’t lie straight in bed, so it’s difficult to work out who asked what when. In my view he shouldn’t have been allowed on the plane.

There are few people who detest Scomo more than I do. But for once, he's right.

Thousands of people are given visas to enter the country and often airlines look at the visa and let you in the plane without checking all the relevant documentation. It's why thousands of people are refused entry in airports not just in Australia but all over the world on weekly basis.

If Djokovic was Joe Bloke, none of us would have heard about it. But he is the number 1 tennis player in the world who thought the exemption from Tennis Australia was enough to bypass border control into Australia. And he can't. I have no doubt Scomo is milking this like mana from heaven. But he's right.

Atagi is an Australian Advisory Group in Immunisation who advises the Federal Health minister about Australian immunisation issues. Not foreign tourists immunisation issues.

I would have to disagree on this point, though it sounds like we are generally in heated agreement!

As best I can tell, Hawke’s dept and the ABF were fine to let him in until the Cth noticed the negative feedback and saw a chance to beat up Vic.

Scummo then implied that Vic granted the visa, which is hilariously awful of him. It’s not so much that he’s never read the Constitution, it’s more that he just doesn’t give a toss what he says, if he thinks it will score him a point.

Els1e · 08/01/2022 10:21

Both are u. Novak because he thinks he can realistically travel round the world without being vaccinated. Australia because they should have been clear before he arrived - none of this it’s ok you’re exempt, oh no you’re not pantomime.

sashagabadon · 08/01/2022 10:27

Wow Gremlin, that is inhumane. Almost unbelievable. I’m surprised there are not more human rights lawyers all over that? No school for the children either?

Paperplain · 08/01/2022 10:34

They don't think that! He has 4 of the best counsel in VIc acting for him (two QCS and 2 juniors - ludicrous really)

Presumably he said he had proof that he was exempt and so was awarded the visa but when he failed to produce it the visa was cancelled.

How is it Border Force's fault he lied?

I don't what it says in the Australian visa but on the Kenyan Visa it makes it clear that the procession of the visa is not the final authority to enter Kenya. I suspect it says someone similar for every country.

Gremlinsateit · 08/01/2022 10:36

Yes, there are human rights lawyers all over it but the relevant Minister has enormous discretion under the relevant laws and sometimes all the court can do is send the issue back to the Minister for further consideration.

These particular detainees are adults (now).

We are currently detaining two Australian-born children in community detention. Until recently they were being held with their parents in a detention centre on an island off the coast, where the older girl was allowed out to attend school under guard. We’re actually a disgrace.

sashagabadon · 08/01/2022 10:37

Re. Novak, it is the lead story over here in the U.K. and leading all the news reports ( the ones I am listening to anyway) they are reporting he has a letter saying he met the requirements from federal government?
If true I presume he’ll win his hearing on Monday?
I hope he does as despite not being Jesus if you (as in Tennis Australia) invite someone to your country to play in an international tournament (where he is the current champ) then to do this to him with the world watching is pretty outrageous.

marcopront · 08/01/2022 10:37

Then they need to point out to the BBC that they didn't say he was granted a visa by Tennis Australia.

KittenCatcher · 08/01/2022 10:39

He should just back down and quietly go home, this will cause major disrraction and spoil the games. He has to follow the entry rules like everyone else.

PracticalQuestion · 08/01/2022 10:40

@BashStreetKid

I'm still somewhat surprised that a top sportsman didn't know a single sensible medic who could have told him vaccination is safer than the virus.

I'm sure he did. People with his mindset don't listen to sensible people.

If his exemption was based on having had covid 9 months ago, it's pretty clear it shouldn't have been granted as that won't make him immune now.

He had it in December. Not 9 months ago.
StartupRepair · 08/01/2022 10:41

Australian detention of asylum seekers is a scourge. I am glad this is being talked about through the Novak fiasco.

milkyaqua · 08/01/2022 10:57

The Djokovic scandal deepened on Saturday after separate revelations that Tennis Australia informed players that a prior infection would be a reason to exempt them from Australia’s tough border restrictions. That advice was given despite the health department telling Tennis Australia on two occasions that exemptions did not exist for those recently infected with Covid.

www.theguardian.com/sport/2022/jan/08/novak-djokovic-relied-on-december-covid-infection-for-vaccine-exemption-court-documents-reveal

CatsLikeBoxes · 08/01/2022 12:04

But when did Tennis Australia grant the medical exemption based on recent infection? The letter from Greg Hunt to Craig Tiley stating recent infection wasn't counted as full vaccination was written in November.
Did Tennis Australia only grant this exemption based on infection post the claimed positive test on December 16?

sashagabadon · 08/01/2022 12:07

So Times Radio U.K. reporting that he had covid 16th December and has a letter from Federal Government that he has met all the visa requirements and is exempt. And it is one part of Aus border force ( the one that issued the letter) not talking to another part of border force ( the I’ve that retracted the visa). If true a complete farce and rather than deporting him imo the Aus government should be apologising to him and paying him compensation for illegal detention and the damage to his reputation.
This story is not going to go away quietly, what a pointless palaver.

Paperplain · 08/01/2022 12:15

I've read the court papers (they are publicly available on the Federal Circuit and Family Court website) and it all very odd. Seems that the had a visa but then this was cancelled on health and safety grounds. The date of his last infection was AFTER he was granted his visa - so it doesn't really tie up. Plus he was snapped out and about the day after apparently testing positive.
GabriellaMontez · 08/01/2022 12:24

We clearly haven't got the full story yet.

It's interesting that his visa was stopped/revoked after a media outcry.

I hope we get to know what has really gone on. Australia has long disregarded human rights so nothing would surprise me.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 08/01/2022 12:44

Yet this thread is full of cheerleaders for Scummo and Australia's immigration practices, long the disgrace of the Pacific.

But it's ok because Djokovic was rude to a line judge once, apparently.

SD1978 · 08/01/2022 12:47

For me, the other telling thing in this that makes him unreasonable, is the alleged Covid infection he had was the beginning of December, about the 12th......... and yet the medical exemption was requested before that, October. So either he precognitively knew he'd catch Covid, or lied on the initial application.

WiganDiva · 08/01/2022 12:56

Or he’s had it twice?
WiganDiva · 08/01/2022 12:58

I think the Australians need to be embarrassed here, lots of inconsistencies and misinformation between different bodies and Morrison trying to make political capital out of it. What a mess.

Roussette · 08/01/2022 13:06

He got it on the 16th December, not the 12th Smile

CharlotteRose90 · 08/01/2022 13:12

Judging by what I’ve read both. He got s letter from tennis Australia on the 7th December saying un vaccinated passengers can travel as long as they prove they had covid within the last 6 months. Then mysteriously he gets covid on the 16th December 😂😂. Yeah massive coincidence and I bet he’s faked it to travel. I imagine they will let him in now it’s been proven Australia fucked up but I don’t think it’s fair. They made the rules and they shouldn’t allow him purely for the fact he’s a celebrity. No vaccination no entry as far as I’m concerned.
